Jan. 2nd, 2007 12:37 amHa! So I was meandering through
nandamai's first line of each month memeage, when I saw in her sidebar a link called 'teal'c sex'. Now, seriously, had to check that out, right? Hilarity. Yes.
Fic now, I think, yeah?
John and Rodney, in a nice little ptsd moment. Sweet, and needed. Reclaiming, by
chopchica (friendship, gen, PG).
I *love*, by the way, the year in review fic memes, especially the ones where people list their favorites, their most surprising, etc, writing. I'm thinking of doing it myself, but possibly with a pimping eye as opposed to a writerly one. The 'fic I read last year that I might possibly read again a lot' version. Dunno. It's how I found
chopchica's fic, though.
ltlj posted a Retrograde 'verse, Vegas prequel, as John returns to Earth only to face the fear of never going home. It's just tactile, amorphous, developing fear and really respectable. Loved Teyla and Elizabeth and Rodney and Jack in this. And Teal'c. Actually, LTLJ just has a knack for peopling her stories brilliantly. Colorado Springs, PG-13 (but read straight on to Vegas and it won't be--further links in the fic header).
Not Gen. Not.
blueraccoon's epic John/Rodney fic Oasis. NC-17. Long and yummy.
shutthef_up wrote a perfectly decadent Sam/Jack fic, with a tasty dish of threesome on the side. There is a really nice light, it seems to me, that rests on fic written by someone who doesn't often write that pairing. It's... it's not taking anything for granted, not letting fanon paint them in rose colored glasses, and not shying away from strengths and faults and... it's balanced. (I love multi-shippers! YAY!) This fic has, beyond that fearless portrayal of characters, bloody brilliant non-talking between people. Entire conversations read from facial expressions and body language, so that on the one hand, when things are verbalized, it matters, and sometimes, it means that people learn to ignore words in favor of actions. This is an incredible fic, and it solidly hits believable characterizations for Sam, Jack, Cam and Daniel, others too. It's so well done. Dance With Me, Now Darling. NC-17.
Also, a new author in the SG-1 type fandom,
thalyn, has posted a short and omg loaded fic called Five things Daniel remembers from when he was ascended, but hasn't admitted to. It's amazing how she hits you where it hurts and then makes you feel like maybe it was worth it. This is epic for such small scale. PG-13 rated, I'd guess. Gen or pre-slash.
Classic team from
thepouncer (a birthday fic for
destina which I must've missed)-- another find from the year in fic memes. Loved her lateral thinking Daniel voice here. Number 3, 1949: Tiger. Gen, PG.
So you know what I'm thinking about? I'm thinking about first loves. I'm thinking about how I haven't written Jack/Daniel since Cameron and his Teal'c crush Took Over My Brain. I'm thinking about how I used to inhale fic about them and... you know, not anymore. I'm thinking that I haven't written them partly because I worry about retreading old ground that other authors have already visited, and possibly more brilliantly, and I'm thinking it's the absence of Jack too, and fandom synergy.
So here's what I'm really thinking: What would be your reaction if I suggested a challenge along the lines of the 'I Loved You First' writer's challenge? Where you go back to your roots and ignore that the story may have already been written, or you take your current canon and work your original favorites (team, pair, character) back in, or if you've moved into a new fandom, you work a crossover. But you announce your intentions. Or you ask for further prompting.
It doesn't have to be *my* first love, you see. You could write original SG-1 teamy goodness, or early season action, or apocafic, or Jack/Daniel or John/Aeryn, or Mal/Simon... you know, WHATEVER. Whatever got you into fandom. Because you never lose it for your first love.

Date: 2007-01-02 06:21 pm (UTC)New Retrograde! *runs*
Yeah, I haven't left Jack/Daniel, especially not as a writer. Though my previous fandom was Lotrips and my first written fanfic was "obscure Sean Bean movies." And over Christmas I was actually bitten by the bunny for Captain Rich (http://www.fanzone50.com/SeanBean/Flightplan.html) / Captain Holland (http://www.rdanderson.com/photos/pandora/pandora.htm) slash. Would Sean Bean/RDA character slash count as roots-crossover? ;-)

Date: 2007-01-02 10:13 pm (UTC)I really think it would be nice to have a low pressure little hurrah for Jack and Daniel and any other pairing that's kind of losing it's shiny without the new canon. I miss them, you know? *pets Jack/Daniel and shoves them a little closer together*
