Jan. 2nd, 2007 12:37 amHa! So I was meandering through
nandamai's first line of each month memeage, when I saw in her sidebar a link called 'teal'c sex'. Now, seriously, had to check that out, right? Hilarity. Yes.
Fic now, I think, yeah?
John and Rodney, in a nice little ptsd moment. Sweet, and needed. Reclaiming, by
chopchica (friendship, gen, PG).
I *love*, by the way, the year in review fic memes, especially the ones where people list their favorites, their most surprising, etc, writing. I'm thinking of doing it myself, but possibly with a pimping eye as opposed to a writerly one. The 'fic I read last year that I might possibly read again a lot' version. Dunno. It's how I found
chopchica's fic, though.
ltlj posted a Retrograde 'verse, Vegas prequel, as John returns to Earth only to face the fear of never going home. It's just tactile, amorphous, developing fear and really respectable. Loved Teyla and Elizabeth and Rodney and Jack in this. And Teal'c. Actually, LTLJ just has a knack for peopling her stories brilliantly. Colorado Springs, PG-13 (but read straight on to Vegas and it won't be--further links in the fic header).
Not Gen. Not.
blueraccoon's epic John/Rodney fic Oasis. NC-17. Long and yummy.
shutthef_up wrote a perfectly decadent Sam/Jack fic, with a tasty dish of threesome on the side. There is a really nice light, it seems to me, that rests on fic written by someone who doesn't often write that pairing. It's... it's not taking anything for granted, not letting fanon paint them in rose colored glasses, and not shying away from strengths and faults and... it's balanced. (I love multi-shippers! YAY!) This fic has, beyond that fearless portrayal of characters, bloody brilliant non-talking between people. Entire conversations read from facial expressions and body language, so that on the one hand, when things are verbalized, it matters, and sometimes, it means that people learn to ignore words in favor of actions. This is an incredible fic, and it solidly hits believable characterizations for Sam, Jack, Cam and Daniel, others too. It's so well done. Dance With Me, Now Darling. NC-17.
Also, a new author in the SG-1 type fandom,
thalyn, has posted a short and omg loaded fic called Five things Daniel remembers from when he was ascended, but hasn't admitted to. It's amazing how she hits you where it hurts and then makes you feel like maybe it was worth it. This is epic for such small scale. PG-13 rated, I'd guess. Gen or pre-slash.
Classic team from
thepouncer (a birthday fic for
destina which I must've missed)-- another find from the year in fic memes. Loved her lateral thinking Daniel voice here. Number 3, 1949: Tiger. Gen, PG.
So you know what I'm thinking about? I'm thinking about first loves. I'm thinking about how I haven't written Jack/Daniel since Cameron and his Teal'c crush Took Over My Brain. I'm thinking about how I used to inhale fic about them and... you know, not anymore. I'm thinking that I haven't written them partly because I worry about retreading old ground that other authors have already visited, and possibly more brilliantly, and I'm thinking it's the absence of Jack too, and fandom synergy.
So here's what I'm really thinking: What would be your reaction if I suggested a challenge along the lines of the 'I Loved You First' writer's challenge? Where you go back to your roots and ignore that the story may have already been written, or you take your current canon and work your original favorites (team, pair, character) back in, or if you've moved into a new fandom, you work a crossover. But you announce your intentions. Or you ask for further prompting.
It doesn't have to be *my* first love, you see. You could write original SG-1 teamy goodness, or early season action, or apocafic, or Jack/Daniel or John/Aeryn, or Mal/Simon... you know, WHATEVER. Whatever got you into fandom. Because you never lose it for your first love.

Date: 2007-01-02 02:39 pm (UTC)Oddly, I was thinking something similar recently, only about Sam/Jack, which I used to be very, very into, but ever since Jack left, and Cameron came on the show...not so much. And actually, I'm not even a huge Sam/Cameron 'shipper. (I mean, he has a huge crush on Teal'c, and a kind of on-a-pedestalish crush on Sam, and I'm not sure what with Daniel. Though I will forever maintain that Cam and Vala will have smokingly hot chemistry because, no matter what, it is not possible for Ben and Claudia not to have smokingly hot chemistry, no matter what series they're on together.) Not that I came to any real conclusions, but I was similarly musing, and thought I'd mention it.
What would be your reaction if I suggested a challenge along the lines of the 'I Loved You First' writer's challenge?
Ooh. Much love. Oh, yes.

Date: 2007-01-02 03:12 pm (UTC)i couldn't really participate in any meaningful or newish way, though, given the terms of the challenge, because in sg-1, i'm still writing my first love, which was jack/daniel. i haven't moved on to the new team or a cameron crush or anything of the sort. i do kinda dabble in sam/jack/daniel, but that's about it.
i did actually do what you suggested, so i must have the same instinct, but i did it my entering a christmas challenge ficathon in another fandom; a previous fandom.
happy new year, and once again, thanks so much for all the recs and all the fic. you are a treasure for the Gate verses.

Yeah, I haven't left Jack/Daniel, especially not as a writer. Though my previous fandom was Lotrips and my first written fanfic was "obscure Sean Bean movies." And over Christmas I was actually bitten by the bunny for Captain Rich (http://www.fanzone50.com/SeanBean/Flightplan.html) / Captain Holland (http://www.rdanderson.com/photos/pandora/pandora.htm) slash. Would Sean Bean/RDA character slash count as roots-crossover? ;-)

Date: 2007-01-02 10:00 pm (UTC)On the upside, I am fairly sure I could manage to write my first loves. So there'd be at least one fic there! Almost have it planned out...
no subject
Date: 2007-01-02 10:04 pm (UTC)Anyway. Really? You'd participate? Because that makes three of us vocally in favor and... I'm starting to think it could happen.

Date: 2007-01-02 10:08 pm (UTC)I'm partly thinking about this because you are writing my first loves with such the wonderful NEW!SHINY!TOYS! glee and I want to recapture that myself. So I wouldn't be barring you from entering, obviously.
Here's a question, though, since you sound inclined, but not committed: Would you be more likely to participate in an open challenge, in a challenge with a deadline, in one with a committment aspect or one with prompts available?

Date: 2007-01-02 10:11 pm (UTC)Perhaps I should be narrowing it down, but I like the open interpretation. I'd rather you and Princess of G and everybody else be involved, you know?

Date: 2007-01-02 10:13 pm (UTC)I really think it would be nice to have a low pressure little hurrah for Jack and Daniel and any other pairing that's kind of losing it's shiny without the new canon. I miss them, you know? *pets Jack/Daniel and shoves them a little closer together*

Date: 2007-01-03 01:52 am (UTC)But this does sound really fun. Depending on how you word things, I may end up having some of my WiPs that fit your theme, and you might be providing the impetus to send them to the top of my WiPs heap...

Date: 2007-01-03 03:18 am (UTC)well, i would gladly participate... I kind of got scared of myself over my lateness in being able to write the darkfic challenge for sg-1, but i think that was simply because it involved darkfic, which i've never really attempted before, and a plot heavy prompt, and the intimidation of writing for one of the writers i most admire in this or any other fandom. So I will definitely finish and not renege, but I'm very late.
OTOH, I was able to finish and turn in my Christmas challenge fic in the other fandom on time with no trouble, because it was more of a romantic/sex type of plot, heavy on characterization of guys I already love.
In general deadlines are GOOD for me. I enjoy deadlines and don't fear them. I can write to prompts, as well, and I enjoy the challenge of that more and more as time goes on. I've been surprised to find out how much I've enjoyed the SG-1 Five Things community, for example.
So yeah. I guess I would participate in basically any way you chose to set it up, with the caveat that I'm not returning to my SG-1 roots, I'm still there IN the roots. :).
You don't really want this to be about other fandoms, though? Am I right? Isn't there still kind of a RPS IS NOT GOOD thing in Gate verse? Because I have been known to write that and if the idea is to go back to old fandoms that's probably the fandom I have the most juice for these days besides SG-1, Lotrips. But I'm not an evangelist for RPS and I don't want to violate the cultural norms of my current fandom (Channels Daniel).
Rambling.
Anyway. Yeah, I could write in such a challenge, if it were specifically to be early seasons SG-1, Jack/Daniel, or whomever... Paul, Sam, Janet. You know the cast.
Does that help? *flails*

Feel free, like, blowing in the wind free, to take that ficlet prompt I left in your LJ and run nostalgically with it. I'd love to read your Sam/Jack or gen team stuff. Go team! Rah rah rah!

Date: 2007-01-03 05:58 am (UTC)I have never been so in danger of missing a deadline. And I would have too, if they hadn't given an extension. I sympathize really a lot. I felt the same way. Let me know if you need a fresh pair of eyes on yours, I'd be happy to help with concrit.
Isn't there still kind of a RPS IS NOT GOOD thing in Gate verse?
Wow, is it a fandom-wide thing? Because you know that MS and the woman who played Sha're really were a thing, and then really separated, and then MS hooked up with Rommie while guest starring and she became Dr. Lam... I guess it's awfully close to RPF. I don't know. It's not my thing, but I am really into the idea that people would do what makes them happy. If that's LOTRips for you, then I would grin like a fiend just because you looked giddy.
I think what I;m leaning towards is an open challenge for a certain period of time, possibly with prompts, either to subject or style. The writer would pick the fandom, the pairing (if there is one) and the setting. I've recently heard of a challenge where you pledge your intentions and that lets the mods cheer you on, but I'm waffling on whether that would discourage people, ultimately.

Date: 2007-01-03 06:06 am (UTC)don't misunderstand; i seem to have no desire to write RPS for Stargate, but if the assignment was to dip back into an old fandom, I was just pondering if that would go over at all in SG circles, but that is not really relevant and feel free to FORGET THE WHOLE THING!!!!
your challenge idea sounds good. i'll be watching to see what you decide, and i am so glad if those of us who are just now discovering this fandom are giving you some glee! because jack/daniel is FULL OF GLEEEEEEE.

As to returning to my fandom roots, I'm not sure I ever left them. A big portion of my fic is still Sam/Daniel, though I do branch out from time to time. Quite gleefully, I might add ;) But yes, I'd be interested, if you're interested. I'm not sure if this is just slash pairings or what?
Thanks again!
