Drafts are nice. It's nice when you finish them and send them off with a sense of accomplishment. Because you know what this means? It means that the lion's share of my dissertation has been drafted. It might not be finished, because my advisor is too lazy to actually get back to me with edits, but I feel pretty good about it. Graduation, here I come (look out, world).

In other news, my dog is stoned. She has a bum knee that they knocked her out to x-ray today (needs surgery, poor pup) which means that she needed me to lift her out of the car, and her face, let me tell you, was loving gravity. Ears, waaaay down. Eyes, half-lidded at best. Head just barely held up. She's a cross between happy and asleep, and it's very funny. I tried to lift her out of the car and in getting my arms around her (she's 70 pounds = not small) she more or less just shrugged into them (not so helpful) like hugging was the best idea ever and maybe could she take a nap on my shoulder while I was here? Now mostly she's licking her nose, staring at the floor and whimpering in a listing sort of way as she drifts around the house and reminds herself that she can't get on the bed because a) she has a bad knee and b) we shut the door to the bedroom. Not that she remembers that from one minute to the next.

Hope she doesn't walk into anything. Just say no, kids. That's the moral of this story.

[livejournal.com profile] kres is posting Find the River (multipart, posting a bit a day), last sequel to Pick Up Here (brilliant) and And Chase the Ride (also amazing). I'm going to have to reread all of it at the end anyway, but right now the words are washing over me like a lullaby, and a sweet one. Amazing art and banners with it too. Jack/Daniel.

Are you all reading [livejournal.com profile] jssangel's posts? You should be, she's posting these amazing fics about Pegasus natives and their attitudes about sex in cultures that have limited populations and a need for as many children from as diverse a genetic pool as possible coming to live and deal with the Earth-grown 'Lantians with their oddly Puritanical, strangely committment-oriented ways learned in a world with an overpopulation problem. It's amazing and psychologically complex and I'm fascinated. Here's a link to one called A Dream of Things That Never Are. Ronon, R and another The Grace of Efficiency, Elizabeth.

[livejournal.com profile] sdraevn = Danvers wrote a wonderfully surreal wedding fic that feels like a wedding to me, with interchangable faces and time in a vacuum and you wonder if it was fun or why you spent so much time there when you would've left any normal party hours earlier. Holding On. She also was gifted pretty art for Under The Skin, which I hadn't read before, but I love for the unique communication and sweetness.

[livejournal.com profile] mmmchelle's fic without a title is Reason 2363 to Love Teyla (my title) it's John/Rodney and NC-17.

Also [livejournal.com profile] destina posted a fic she wrote for barkley called Transitions which is Jack & Daniel & Teal'c and S9 and growing apart and staying in touch and marvelous.

I started reading another WIP, and now I'm committed. *head/desk* Oh well, it's [livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock and SGA as 'The Mummy' and I'd call it crack except she keeps writing Egypt so evocatively. Three parts up so far, no schedule. Fair warning. Sky Full Of. John, Rodney (and John/Rodney soon, I hope) and Jeanie (she's marvelous).

In other fannish, but not rec's, news, got me mah [livejournal.com profile] tealc_ficathon assignment and am very excited, the [livejournal.com profile] remixredux pieces will be posted Sunday, it would seem *is a little clueless about anything Not Her Dissertation* which is wierd to me because it's been done for ages, and I'm used to insta-f/b!crack, so it's wierd. We'll see how I fare as an anonymous ficcer, though. I also finally saw the SG-1 finale thanks to a timely hint from [livejournal.com profile] rydra_wong to check out DivX to let me watch .avi files on my MacOSX system. So. Slashy. Arthur's Mantle was the most Cam/Teal'c slashiest, but this had fabulous moments. Because Teal'c taught him to kel no' reem, but they kept gettting distracted, right? So Cam's still working on the basics. Hee! Plus, Teal'c growled, I'm pretty sure. I also like that T went off to do his thing and no one yelled at him about chain of command or doubted him for a minute.

Also... um... there was something else and I've forgotten it.

OH! Almost finished the next bit of p0rn. This is the bit for [livejournal.com profile] taselby, though I managed exactly none of my prompts. Another time, another fic. There's sex, though. I think that was the only real requirement. However, Rydra has pointed out that while I was distracted by discribing skin tone and the smell of the air, there might have been an actual theme in there somewhere and would I mind maybe doing something with that? Only much more tactfully said. So, soon. Especially now I don't have to write science for a few hours.

I think that's it. I'm a little dazed yet.

*hugs back and crawls into your lap for good measure*

I'm taking the evening off. Might watch some scifi, might rewatch a favorite film.

Dog is still stoned. She feels no pain. And the recovery will be 6-8 weeks, but it's already been 6 weeks without improvement, so I don't think it'll be too bad as long as she's starting to feel better.

*looks at you funny* It's not really. Tenacious, maybe. Yeah, it's just stubborness at this point. Who knew they'd give you a degree for that? lol.

That's always been something I have to overlook in television shows. At the very least in science, once you have A ph.d, you've proved dedication or whatever, and you can very freely move laterally into different fields; you needn't get a degree in each of them... but on T.V. being an expert requires a paper saying so, not published works or a demonstrated proficiency... it's very different.

*displays stop hand* And don't even get me started on how they never would have had time to do all these things all before they were 25. Sam flew in the Gulf too, did you know? And finished years younger than I in the same field. *eyebrow quirk*

Mabi made me a congratulations icon. *glee*

Yes, I was actually thinking that someone needs to point out that Daniel's multi-doctorates do not actually signify Soopa-Genius in academia; more likely, to many academics they probably signify Perpetual Student, someone who keeps racking up qualifications because he's obviously clever but no way would anyone offer him an actual job and he won't buckle down and produce something publishable.

Apparently, according to fandom, he kept publishing really outrageous theories about aliens and ghosts (Dinner with Janet comes to mind) which might explain why he kept going back to school... but otherwise, exactly.

Yup. Even if you get them published, getting known as the one with the really bizarro theories probably does not contribute to one's chances of getting on the tenure track.

hee! great icon.

ah, the scifi handwave is our friend. *hugs*

one of the funny things about tv shows is how they sometimes try to research, so the information they use sometimes feels like a combination of almost-truths. which is why i've grown to love phrases such as "the rift in the space time continuum". *bg*

ps. er, not that i have a clue about that kind of thing for the most part. ;)

I suspect that it's very difficult to find an advisor who can handle running rampant over universal truths and laws of physics, but yes, I try not to think about it too much lest the joy disappear, but on the continuum between pure fiction and absolute realism, I'm usually happy if they stick to 'mildly logical within the rules we've established'. *g*

anyway....yup, you're right. most advisers probably run screaming. if it was me i'd probably go to easy on them about some things, and slap then upside the head about other things. *veg*

Congrats on the diss-draft! Most excellent. It *is* a milestone, because now there's no chance that the Thing won't exist. I always felt like the Thing would just never exist, even though I worked and worked away at it. But once you have a draft, you can say, "Oh yeah, I can do this whole thing."

huzzah!

Every few days I have this repeat epiphany where I realize that I might actually finish this thing, and do it well.

And then I forget and get swamped and overwhelmed and panic and flail a bit.

And then I finish something and tell my Mom I might just be able to do it, and she rolls her eyes at me like I've lost my short term memory. But it's SURPRISING.

Just methods to do now.

From: [identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_minxy_/
LOL, you'd be welcome and I'd be honored. Will you name the one I'm working on now? I can't find a name for it, and the title I wrote it for is too depressing for the tone it ended up with.

First time, lots of sight and heat themes. Anything? *g*

The only thing I've been able to come up with is "Losing Sight of the Shore." But that's a little cliche, and may have been used before.

Maybe "A Rare Universe?"

Hmmm, it's hard to do this without knowing more about the story. What's the tone?

Date: 2006-03-24 03:06 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_minxy_/
Well, it's a mostly happy sexy tone. If you ask Rydra, she'll tell you that there are also deeper themes of friends just having died and two people offering each other comfort and it maybe turning into something deeper.

But I think it's about Teal'c seducing Cam with poetry. I'm shallow like that.

Current title on the chopping block is 'The Eye is not Satisfied with Seeing'. It was 'Now more than ever seems it rich' but Keats' Ode to a Nightengale' was all dark and romanticizing death, really, and I think RW may have been right nixing that idea on the grounds that Cam isn't a Keats type of guy.

Would you read 'The Eye is not Satisfied with Seeing' just based on title?

Not turned in yet, and a bit or two left to do, but gracious... I might just do this thing.

It boggles the mind.
