minxy: Teal'c raises a hand to say "hey". (Default)
[personal profile] minxy
Hi guys.

You may have noticed something, or it may be completely invisible to you at this time, but here it is: I'm posting from Dreamwidth, and the underscores are gone. It's been a transition (not really), let me tell you (short story), deciding to lose the underscores (never wanted 'em, but this Russian woman already snagged minxy on LJ!) but I'm adjusting (party at 7PM!)

My history with Dreamwidth is already long, since I've been beta testing using my RL handle; a lot of you have friended it! And you're welcome to stay friended to it, obviously, as I post photos and stuff and if you're curious about the upcoming cross-country move, etc, you're welcome to stay tuned.

This is where the fandom action is going to be, though. In my trusty fandom journal (now with no underscores!) Chez minxy at Dreamwidth.

I'm going to start crossposting from Dreamwidth, but leaving comments enabled in both places. So, if you're baffled by the potential DW migration, the bottom line with me is that you don't have to do anything to keep watching me at LJ. If you'd like to move to DW or already have done, you may want to watch that journal. I won't be directly importing _minxy_ (LJ) to minxy (DW), though. For two reasons: 1) those masterlists are messy and need to be updated anyway, this is a good time and 2) there's redundancy and then there's too much. Recs are generally posted in a post and then gathered again into the masterlist provided I haven't been too lazy. There's no need to have them all listed four times in two journals. This is a good chance to do some spring cleaning, anyway. I'll be (cross)posting a masterlist of my stories, too, since the webpage is stalled against real life calming the fuck down, but I won't spam you with crossposting stories you have all already seen on LJ. I'll just spam you with the masterlist, I figure. Possibly with New! Exciting! Summaries! I don't know yet.

In the meantime, let me tell you why I feel like a bad beta tester: my real life has gone allll topsy turvy lately. I moved, I found out my contract was not being renewed, I applied for new jobs, I got very ill with a rotten chest cold, I got better, I got an interview and was offered the job. I'm now pricing moving companies for the first time in my life, and trying to contain the happy. It's glorious change, but it's really cutting into my fanfiction time.

I hate that when that happens. Thing is, though, I have two writing obligations right now, and I'm damned if I'm going to flake on them. So the state of the writing is that I have a draft for the [profile] tealc_ficathon due May 1, and a beta (BLESS HER.) I have something like a few chapters written for the [community profile] stargate_summer novelathon that I FOR SOME REASON THOUGHT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA (DAMMIT). But then Teal'c decided that he really wanted the novel written, so here I am, slogging out one scene at a time, without any kind of regular schedule. And yet, the novel progresses.

One of the first things I'll do with the minxy journal of fannishness is create a draft filter for extra eyes on this whole novel business. If you'd like to cheer on the novel, please, please do and tell me so I can add you on the filter.

I was going to post about teaching and straying from the academic path and why I am so damn sure I'm getting closer to where I should be and why this job is perfect and how many people in fandom helped me figure all this stuff out but I think I can sum it up like this (at least the last point):

Back, oh, last year or so, [personal profile] synecdochic memorably told me the best advice she had for my troubles with my boss was to get the hell out of the job. I didn't think it was an option at the time, and tried to work with him. I did start thinking about the kind of job I wanted next, though (teaching and research, we hoped) and realizing I wasn't trained to teach, let alone manage people and an externally funded laboratory.

You do one thing at a time, though, if you're me, so I started talking to [personal profile] troyswann about teaching, teaching philosophies and writing of same to express commitment to education. I've spoken to many, many more people since trying to hone the ideas to a science education context, but Sal was instrumental in helping me shape my own philosophy. I don't even know higher praise for a teacher: Salieri helped me create my own teaching philosophy. She taught me that.

In, what, February? when my boss and I decided to part ways (or, he opted not to renew my contract) I was furious and happened to catch [personal profile] raqs online. She made many reasonable calming and encouraging points, but the truly brilliant one is best paraphrased by "dwelling on weaknesses makes for mediocrity; excellence comes from playing to your strengths." Considering that by 'calming and encouraging' I mean to imply that I both though my boss was an asshole of highest proportions and also that I might possibly be dirt, I think my current rebounded self-esteem is remarkably due to Raqs' awesomeness. I would fold 1,000 origami for you, darling.

Anyway, that's the state of the new place, and new journal. Soon to be broadcast from the new, very small town on the other side of the country (with such a more reasonable cost of living, thank god, that I will have internet and cable BOTH! In my apartment, even! I'll be back in touch with the beating pulse of fandom!)

Welcome to Dreamwidth, dream big. 'Scuse me, I need to go upload some icons.

I sympathize and in some ways empathize with your situation in rl. And I definitely understand the [livejournal.com profile] tealc_ficathon and [livejournal.com profile] stargate_summer flailing. (WHAT WERE WE THINKING?!?!?!)

I transferred my journal which was really simple but am going through the process of reworking links in the masterlist and weaning out non-ficcy things (man, how many memes have I done?!) There's no way to just transfer one tag from a journal, right? I think this dw journal is just going to be more my ficcish one, for recs and meta and stories since I ended up gabbing too much at the lj one about EVERYTHING. Heh.

You know, you were one of my first lj friends. And here we are again!

Goes back to *writing* tealc story.
Good luck with the move!

You were! I was so nervous about this strange "lj thing" aizjanika had been talking about and she convinced me to at least forward a story to get posted [livejournal.com profile] tealc_fic (I hope I did that html right)and you and moonshayde were so encouraging that I screwed up my courage to finally join livejournal properly.

So see, you were to blame an instigator helping my path to madness. :-D

I'm in complete denial about summer. I just need to get tealc fic done. In my defense (of insanity), I also was running my very first ficathon too. Heh.

Wait--what? So the access filters aren't working, and everyone has access to the my old dren that I stuck behind a filter? I thought access filters worked, but reading filters didn't. *fails at closed beta*

Bizarre. I have two filters established here, and they both show up in the posting interface when I chose the custom option. (In the drop-down box with public, private, and access, at the bottom.) It didn't show up until I'd established the filters, IIRC, but it does now. (And I've made lots and lots of use of it.)

As long as only the people I populated on the filter can see my ditherings from 2004, all's well.

The filter management page is here, which is also under "organize" as "manage filters" (from the profile page or any non-customized page).

I hope that helps! I'm normally not one for many posting filters, but I'm merging both of my LJs here and pretty much the entire old one is filtered out of not needed everyone to know how ridiculous proto-ainsley was. That tag is frelling MASSIVE--and I have another two years of posts to tag. *g*

indeed you are awesome. thank you for the update and I'm so glad you are able to keep writing despite it all. real life does take over though, and your career of course is SO IMPORTANT.

I'd love to know about your rl journal if you're comfortable with me being there. if not, no harm, no foul. email me? princessofgeeks at yahoo dot com. I would also love being on any writing filters you have, but again: only if you want me there. I won't be offended either way.

otherwise, i'll be watching your progress. GO YOU.

Congrats on the job! And on getting the teaching philosphy articulated--i've managed to squeak by without one for years & have spent the last 2 months trying to come up with one that doesn't sound stupid.

Moving Tip: DO NOT, do not under any circumstances use one of the moving contracters/facilitaters that you find online. They go by a specific name but the term escapes me--oh, moving contracter.
Deal directly with a local moving company, I've never had any problems when I did that. In fact in my last move, by dealing with a local area contracter (not affiliated with a big name moving line) I got a huge discount.

A local moving company associated with a national company (Bekins, etc) can work fine but also your local guys will specialize in long distance moves to specific regions/state groupings, depends on how big their operation is. Get on their websites & on the net to look at consumer reviews (http://www.consumeraffairs.com/movers/moving_companies.htm). And make sure that the company is signed with the BBB.

Shop around for quotes. A good company will visit your home and talk with you about packing (them or you, tips), provide an in-print quote with options, provide the official Movers Rights pamphlet, and talk to you about any & all concerns when it comes to taking care of your furniture (I have 3 pieces my great-grandfather made) or the "what-ifs". They'll discuss how flexible your schedule is, as they often will bundle several moves in a truck (if yours is small) to go cross-country.

By shopping around for quotes I've managed to play companies off each other & get a lower rate. For example, Co.A has a lower quote but I don't like something (dates, or the rep is annoying), Co.B is a little higher but I like everything so I suggest a quote match with their competitor.

Finally, if you're desperate, and depending on start/end points. If you have a small move & don't mind driving a truck cross country. Either Budget or U-Haul often has loading/unloading contracters that you can hire through them. You just pack & drive yourself. Cross-country I wouldn't do it unless I had a friend with me.

In regards to the avoid at any cost the Internet Moving Broker/Contractor. I had a horrible, horrible experience simply moving 400miles with Nationwide Relocation Service. (afterwards I discovered all the horrible online reviews). These companies "facilitate" and act as your broker with the van lines; so you never actually talk to the company that will be physically moving your belongings. I cannot begin to describe what a clusterfuck (excuse the language) the experience was.

Date: 2009-04-24 07:24 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_minxy_/
I can't tell you how many horror stories I've heard about moving companies. The two or three I'm playing off each other right now impress me so far and have good BBB reviews and policies in general and offer binding quotes. I've found that asking them if they'll match each other's quotes is the best way to find out dirt, though, as they are quick to point out if Company C has bad business policies (and generally they're really right.)

But yes, (*big sigh*) I'll take all your advice.

Ah, looks like you're already doing the stuff I recommended. :-) Sounds like you've found a few good eggs to negotiate with.

I am dreading whenever I have to move from where I am now--I know from experience that all the local moving companies are sort of okay, and overpriced.
