minxy: Teal'c raises a hand to say "hey". (Default)

My 'scaper background, before we begin, is as follows: I watched the last episode when they did that big marathon right before the miniseries and I watched the mini. Curious, after that, I started watching the series but lost interest somewhere in the middle of season 1.

After a significant amount of poking and prodding encouragement in the form of [livejournal.com profile] rydra_wong and [livejournal.com profile] thassalia and the very very funny 'Farscape for 'Gaters' and vice versa from [livejournal.com profile] cofax7 and [livejournal.com profile] katie_m, respectively, along with other miscellaneous 'Scaper glee, I picked up the first season again, somewhere around Durka Returns to give it another shot.

The bargain being that that was when it started getting really good and came into it's own (and about when I gave up. Coincidence?) Turns out, I'd already seen Durka Returns, A Human Reaction and 2-3 more episodes so I didn't spend a whole lot of time rewatching those.

So this brings us to Nerve, the first new episode to me. Thoughts:

I'm starting to really get what 'Scapers mean by bodily fluids. I mean both John and Aeryn are looking really sweaty and teary and nasty this episode, which is sort of impressive, really. And how exactly is a damaged nerve going to let her work out but then spit up blood? *handwave handwave* Not Human Yadda Explanation #4

And D'Argo and Aeryn have a cool little interaction with the discussion of a warrior dying alone if not in battle and yes yes I'll help you die alone, yadda yadda, and then both acting totally different. That was cool. Plays into my current *thinky* state about whether Not Saying things isn't very important sometimes.

The 'nerve sample' thingy they got going on? Totally made me laugh because they are using what appears to be a Beckman Pipetteman. I guess they really do have a corner on the scientific market.

HEY! Scorpy! Where you BEEN, bro? Oooooh, you creepy. How is Harvey going to get in John's head? And I think I missed the part where we found out what exactly tipped Scorpy off that John was not all he appeared.

and awww, the Phantom of the Opera's batfucknuts little brother Stark! You know, in the mini he was pretty zen, but here he is just, wow. Really nuts, innit he?

You know, the Crace storyline isn't terribly interesting to me. And the blonde Sebatian (sp?) chick? Don't even really remember her name, but I like how she uses props to actually look like she's a hacker. Is she really short or is Chiana taller than I thought she was.

Huh, the blonde appears to be rather gullible, as anyone can see that Chi has a lousy poker face. Can't you tell she's speaking really slowly all of a sudden and doing the crazy head tilt scheme? Trap. She's scheming. Also, is it me or is Chiana speaking differently than she did in the mini? Whoa. Flame on, Chiana.

HEY! That's a lousy place to stop the episode! John needs eyedrops to help with the pinkeye. *mutters and queues up another*

The Hidden Memory. Right.

So was it me or was John's 'stay the hell out of my mind!' very like a conditioned response? Maybe he's just freaked out, but I'm thinking it's the Daddy/Einstein in his head.

You know, all this talk about 'the chair' totally reminds me of the Atlantis 'enzyme' and the Dark Angel 'virus'. Might work for the writers but too much emphasis sounds a bit hokey, dudes. Plus, someone explain to me how an enzyme can be transmitted in food sometime because it was my understanding that the stomach would totally nuke that protein into shreds. But that's a discussion for Atlantis peeps.

And more Aeryn & D'Argo cuteness. *pets D'Argo* He's such a softie. Reminds me of Teal'c. I like him muchly.

Bwahahaha. I like the blonde more now. *snicker* She's sneaky.

And Scorpy is wonderfully demented.

But you know? After 9ish years of SG-1, you gotta admire the fact that Aeryn goes in with leather clothes and a big gun and that's it for gear. *thumbs up for Aeryn*

Ooooh, and Stark is all shiny. Shiny shiny Stark. That's my Zen Master! Awww, he's petting John. You know, before, I could only really see the John/Aeryn ship, but I'm starting to think other possibilities may be open to us here, though John and Aeryn are always gonna be my fav. Well, mostly Aeryn. I really love Aeryn. Aww, and now I love John because he honestly just said 'How you doin'?' ah ah ah!

Um, so Scorpy and the red haired Dominatrix? What is with the leather tails? Isn't that annoying???

Eeep! Aeryn. Awww, I love Aeryn. Even when she's being all ruthless and kickass and causing screaming and stuff. The blonde is boring me again.

And, the universal constant: The good guys can aim without looking, the bad guys couldn't hit the broad side of a barn if their life depended on it (and it frequently does).

I hate to be all Prophecy Girl, but seriously: wait two more eps. The end of Family Ties is what hooked me.

After that, Seasons 2 & 3 are really the best ones. Pretty non-stop, with only a few clunkers.

I've heard that, yes. I'm committed at least through the beginning of S2 now. And really, while not being 'hooked' exactly, I'm pretty entertained anyway, so I could see continuing to watch this show regardless.

Hee - I hope you keep going and I hope you enjoy it:) It's a beautifully messy, gorgeous, silly, arcy, romantic, heartwrenching, stomach turning show. I adore it unconditionally, but it is not everyone's cup of tea:)

And the Aeryn love? It will only grow. Actually, I can almost promise that your love for all of the characters will continue to grow. They really do develop, get planes and angles, screw up beyond belief and make really, really bad decisions. It's fabulous:)

I promise to keep going. I'm oddly really impressed by the messy, at least that the actors are willing to look unattractive, which is cool. And all the mistakes and the faults? Yay. And the idea that they will arc and change the characters and EVOLVE them? I am really really into that idea. Enough to commit to watching through the beginning of S2 at least. But I really do love Aeryn, so I'm probably committed to more of it than I admit right now. *g*

Rydra made me promise to report on episodes, so I figured I'd actually post on them. What's wierd, though, is already knowing where they'll end up, so I'm sure that will color everything. I'm pretty sure I wasn't meant to greet Scorpius like an old friend at his first entrance, for example.

The actors are willing to do just about anything:) And I really, really mean that. They have a sort of joyous willingness to look awful, to look ridiculous, to look beaten and battered and foolish. So the moments when they're beautiful are absolutely startling.

And promise me that if you feel your interest wavering in S2, to ask for a list of the best eps because some of them you should see just for the sake of them being fabulous television:)

lol. Promise.

And, I got that impression from Claudia on the Stargate DVDs, that she is very firmly committed to serving the story and part of the reason she liked working with Michael Shanks was his similar willingness to look like a loser. *g*

But much as I think Vala is a breath of fresh air, it's Aeryn who owns my heart, seriously.

Hee:) I adore Vala, but Aeryn will always, always be my girl:)

When you get to mid-S2 and see Out of Their Minds, you will truly believe her (and all of them) about being willing to do anything to serve the story:)

Get used to the handwaving now *g*. Actually, I'm not sure that Farscape science makes that much less sense than Stargate science, but they generally don't even bother to technobabble.

Basically, you have to accept the fact that the show runs on character and dramatic logic, and the science is entirely froonium-powered*.

{*"Froonium" is a very useful term invented by one of the writers, Ricky Manning (a.k.a. "The Froon") when he was working on Star Trek, as shorthand for "we'll fill in the technobabble later". E.g., "we'll say they can't contact the ship because the high froonium content in the rocks is blocking transmissions."}

Reminds me of Teal'c.

D'Argo totally aspires to be Teal'c, but as you'll see, he's really far too dorky to make it convincing. This is part of his charm.

How is Harvey going to get in John's head?

Patience, grasshopper. All shall be revealed in good time ...

Totally made me laugh because they are using what appears to be a Beckman Pipetteman.

My absolute favourite moment of Ozzie prop economy is when, in a much later ep, the role of high-tech sci-fi explosives is played by empty bottles of "Donna Karan for Men".

Hey, I got over the muppets... and seriously, the froonium-powered idea is really entertaining. I still remember a couple of Star Trek behind the scenes things where they showed a script before the technobabble was inserted and it just said 'I wouldn't recommend that Sir, TECH TECH TECH."

Patience, grasshopper.

Aw, shucks. *kicks a pebble* I think waiting for the pieces to fall into the places I knew them to be in the miniseries might be a wierd ongoing experience, actually. Normally, I hate spoilers. *shrugs* But this is sorta... different.

Heh. New game for when I'm handwaving the medical and scientific stuff: spot the prop!
