A February Weekend Recs List, Part the First.
synecdochic gave us Right Ascension (Daniel/female!Cameron sg1) following directly on from Declination, which are absolutely scorchingly romantic and strong and argumentative and bulletproof. Cameron as a woman is becoming canonical for me in some universe just a half step off from our own. I have absolutely no trouble jumping into full belief in this 'verse, complete with the nurture differences that make Cammie so different from Cam. The whole verse is here, and was to some extent cowritten with
ivorygates. Delination is safe for work, Right Ascension is filled with sexin'.
Who, blissfully, gives us an established relationship coda after the climax (har) of Right Ascension: Contradanse: is Cammie/Daniel, NC-17, trust and belief and faith and becoming. An elegant example of smut telling a larger emotional story.
abyssinia4077: Now the Sun has Come to Earth Sam/Teal'c apocafic sg1. A beautiful way to go down swinging, and holding someone's hand. Sam's need and Teal'c's loyalty are amazing here, and heartrending. Worksafe.
From
mmmchelle at
chellefic: a quirky little moment in time (with snark). Aliens Made Them... Sorta, kinda, something. Probed. sga, mckay/sheppard, nsfw.
(If I were a nice person, I would organize these better for you, but...)
from the artist formally known as Danvers: Homecoming (team sga John gen.) I have to admit that sometimes canon and fanon John don't always seem like the same character to me (and I lean towards fanon John, actually) but in stories like this, the distiction disappears and I just feel for him. The Outcast storyline deserved a coda like this. It's sweet and adorable and makes no sense except that it's perfect for these characters to react this way.
The Language That God Speaks, by Liz Barr, is a crossover between Harry Potter and Sandman that rocked my socks with Hermione's smarts, curiosity and rebellious streak. Snape is also interesting and nuanced, and the character of the librarian was cooky and wonderful.
I found that story and others through a comm called
halfamoon, a female characters love fest for the first half of February. It's been a wealth of multifandom strong women stories: crossovers, het, gen, slash, stories, vids, icons, movies, comics, shows. Amazing.
I think I found this there too: Dr. Who, post S3 new series, I believe (I've lost track of the episodes, but don't have a concrete idea of when I'll watch them, so am less concerned with spoilers) originally posted to
rose_lives (Rose Tyler, Defender of the Earth), Go Places (Rose, Mickey, Zoe, PG) is by
livii, and a joyous romp.
Now *this* Dr. Who fic I found through a different comm, this one being
choc_fic (The Characters of Color Love Fest) from a familiar face: Of a Lifetime [Doctor Who, Rita-Anne Smith, Ten, Mickey, G] from
astrogirl2 is a phenomenal glimpse at Mickey's grandmother Rita-Anna, who once upon a time, had a run-in with a strange man. The tone is a perfect blend of age and wonder, and the character herself is priceless. I want a whole fandom around her.
Seriously, if Choc_Fic wanted to introduce greater fandom to overlooked characters of color (I think Rita-Anne was on screen for approximately an eye-blink) then it worked. I want this woman to have her own fandom; seeing as how this is incredibly unlikely, I would like to encourage original fic writers to INCLUDE THIS WOMAN IN WHATEVER YOU ARE WRITING. This will, likely, necessitate you going and reading Astrogirl's story, but there you are.
Thank you to everyone who ventured over there to read my story, btw. Much much appreciated. I think I shall post another little link here now: my story. It's not what you'd expect, probably. I'm getting ready to post a commentary on it, actually. Soonish.
A beautiful little Teyla gen story (S4 spoilers, generally) in a sweet, pragmatic moment in time. Alunt Tea [SGA, Teyla, Gen] from
wickedwords. She does a really nice job of taking Teyla to the point of doing something unusual and then explaining why in a story full of character and culture. (I think that's why my Sam/Teal'c fic has stalled out; the lack of explanation for unusual behavior. I ought to go back and reread that one now I've had some distance.) (Teyla gen sga)
20thcenturyvole posted a teamy SGA fic called Wet, post-S4 amorphously, it is a gift of a family sort of moment. Cheered me greatly the other night.
