A February Weekend Recs List, Part the First.

[livejournal.com profile] synecdochic gave us Right Ascension (Daniel/female!Cameron sg1) following directly on from Declination, which are absolutely scorchingly romantic and strong and argumentative and bulletproof. Cameron as a woman is becoming canonical for me in some universe just a half step off from our own. I have absolutely no trouble jumping into full belief in this 'verse, complete with the nurture differences that make Cammie so different from Cam. The whole verse is here, and was to some extent cowritten with [livejournal.com profile] ivorygates. Delination is safe for work, Right Ascension is filled with sexin'.

Who, blissfully, gives us an established relationship coda after the climax (har) of Right Ascension: Contradanse: is Cammie/Daniel, NC-17, trust and belief and faith and becoming. An elegant example of smut telling a larger emotional story.

[livejournal.com profile] abyssinia4077: Now the Sun has Come to Earth Sam/Teal'c apocafic sg1. A beautiful way to go down swinging, and holding someone's hand. Sam's need and Teal'c's loyalty are amazing here, and heartrending. Worksafe.

From [livejournal.com profile] mmmchelle at [livejournal.com profile] chellefic: a quirky little moment in time (with snark). Aliens Made Them... Sorta, kinda, something. Probed. sga, mckay/sheppard, nsfw.

(If I were a nice person, I would organize these better for you, but...)

from the artist formally known as Danvers: Homecoming (team sga John gen.) I have to admit that sometimes canon and fanon John don't always seem like the same character to me (and I lean towards fanon John, actually) but in stories like this, the distiction disappears and I just feel for him. The Outcast storyline deserved a coda like this. It's sweet and adorable and makes no sense except that it's perfect for these characters to react this way.

The Language That God Speaks, by Liz Barr, is a crossover between Harry Potter and Sandman that rocked my socks with Hermione's smarts, curiosity and rebellious streak. Snape is also interesting and nuanced, and the character of the librarian was cooky and wonderful.

I found that story and others through a comm called [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon, a female characters love fest for the first half of February. It's been a wealth of multifandom strong women stories: crossovers, het, gen, slash, stories, vids, icons, movies, comics, shows. Amazing.

I think I found this there too: Dr. Who, post S3 new series, I believe (I've lost track of the episodes, but don't have a concrete idea of when I'll watch them, so am less concerned with spoilers) originally posted to [livejournal.com profile] rose_lives (Rose Tyler, Defender of the Earth), Go Places (Rose, Mickey, Zoe, PG) is by [livejournal.com profile] livii, and a joyous romp.

Now *this* Dr. Who fic I found through a different comm, this one being [livejournal.com profile] choc_fic (The Characters of Color Love Fest) from a familiar face: Of a Lifetime [Doctor Who, Rita-Anne Smith, Ten, Mickey, G] from [livejournal.com profile] astrogirl2 is a phenomenal glimpse at Mickey's grandmother Rita-Anna, who once upon a time, had a run-in with a strange man. The tone is a perfect blend of age and wonder, and the character herself is priceless. I want a whole fandom around her.

Seriously, if Choc_Fic wanted to introduce greater fandom to overlooked characters of color (I think Rita-Anne was on screen for approximately an eye-blink) then it worked. I want this woman to have her own fandom; seeing as how this is incredibly unlikely, I would like to encourage original fic writers to INCLUDE THIS WOMAN IN WHATEVER YOU ARE WRITING. This will, likely, necessitate you going and reading Astrogirl's story, but there you are.

Thank you to everyone who ventured over there to read my story, btw. Much much appreciated. I think I shall post another little link here now: my story. It's not what you'd expect, probably. I'm getting ready to post a commentary on it, actually. Soonish.

A beautiful little Teyla gen story (S4 spoilers, generally) in a sweet, pragmatic moment in time. Alunt Tea [SGA, Teyla, Gen] from [livejournal.com profile] wickedwords. She does a really nice job of taking Teyla to the point of doing something unusual and then explaining why in a story full of character and culture. (I think that's why my Sam/Teal'c fic has stalled out; the lack of explanation for unusual behavior. I ought to go back and reread that one now I've had some distance.) (Teyla gen sga)

[livejournal.com profile] 20thcenturyvole posted a teamy SGA fic called Wet, post-S4 amorphously, it is a gift of a family sort of moment. Cheered me greatly the other night.

To Be Continued...

Aww, thanks for the rec! I admit to having fallen a bit in love with Rita-Anne, myself, and also think there should be lots more fic written about her, whether from people who've read my story or not. :)

It is interesting to me, like, in a sobering way, that this is kind of a trend for [livejournal.com profile] choc_fic writers. I mean, I *adore* Bra'tac, and I sometimes think I am one of maybe three people who have ever written his POV.

We could get t-shirts made promoting more fic about these characters. (More fic for Rita-Anne! More fic for Bra'tac!)

(I wrote for choc_fic and all Bra'tac got was this lousy t-shirt.)

(vote Bra'tac for character most deserving of his own fandom!)

I absolutely vote for Bra'tac for that, even if I didn't read your story out of spoiler fear. :)

Oh, don't read it! It is definitely set in S10, no kidding about that. (you know how some stories are sort of vaguely spoilery? This one is not that kind of story.) (Also, I think it will make so much more sense if you've seen Line in the Sand.)

You could read Footsoldiers on Uneven Ground (http://users.livejournal.com/_minxy_/70881.html), though. It's backstory for Bra'tac and Teal'c, although I got juuuuuust a smidge jossed. Only I noticed, though, pretty sure.

Does this mean there is anyone who hasn't read Footsoldiers? Because...that's just...that's just WRONG. EVERYONE should read it. Now.

um. Hi there!

Astro's just watching Stargate for the first time, and is only through S6, I believe (ooooh! Friend her and read her reactions! They're wonderful and scientific and fabulous!) and thus, not so much with reading fanfic yet.

Bra'tac appreciates your enthusiasm! *pets story*

I have gone and read it now! And that is a very cool bit of backstory, interesting and believable. And it's Bra'tac! Aww, man, now I really want more Bra'tac fic. :)

(And, yep, I've just finished S6. And my fanfic reading has been very spotty, even with all the great non-spoilery recs people have given me.)

I feel the same way about Farscape, though I'm partway through the last season now. I expect the fanfic reading will increase when I no longer have spoiler fear, but coming new into a fandom full of writing is... intimidating to say the least.

(Glad you liked the story. I adore Bra'tac. I've only written him twice as POV character, but I've written a fair amount of Teal'c, if and when you are jonesing for Teal'c stories.)

Yeah, I'm probably avoiding a lot of stuff I could safely read along with the spoilery stuff, myself. Hopefully once that's no longer an issue it'll get much easier, although I still doubt I'm ever actually going to catch up. "Intimidating" is definitely a word for it.

I really should read more Teal'c fic, though. *loves on Teal'c*

Okay then. Still. FOOTSOLDIERS!

(she sounds better than me. I just used fic to spoil myself rotten (except for season 10). I think handled Meridian WAY better that way.)

Bra'tac is awesome. I've had so much fun the couple times I've written him.

I was catching up on the first five seasons when season 6 was airing, and I was kind of confused by the episode schedule on SciFi anyway, so it didn't really occur to me that I was working towards why the Daniel guy was not there and this Jonas person was.

Episodic T.V. man.

If I had any prompting mojo, I would be prompting Bra'tac at your commentficathon right now.

Oh, wow, yeah, that could be confusing. I've actually heard a number of people mention similar experiences. I guess I lucked out by being limited to dvds and thus seeing in order.

I know!

I just went and gave him some. But it's not hard, I promise. You just pick one or two or three or more characters and then some random (or not so random) words and slap them on a comment. Rigel's been using her scrabble dictionary and katie_m had fun with random word generators.

It's just very easy to fall into that 'verse, isn't it?

I even have a Cammie!verse icon, Syne-approved. *points*

go codemonkey, go!

(I know! I just...there are so very many fics waiting for me I almost don't know which to read first and then I don't read any and then there are MORE waiting for me. Is vicious cycle. And then I spam LJ comments everywhere instead.)
