minxy: Teal'c raises a hand to say "hey". (Default)

Yanno, flist, I seem to be going through a strange phase, fannishly. RL is distracting with all it's goodness, and I'm finding myself with less time for long fics--even when I bookmark them with alacrity and great enthusiasm. I went to bed early last night with this amazing desire to hold a book rather than my laptop while I read, and I picked up Imaro again, only to fuss at reading another fight when I wasn't terribly in the mood.

[livejournal.com profile] rydra_wong is reading [livejournal.com profile] 50books_poc, the marvelous brain-child of [livejournal.com profile] carenejeans. The goal is to read 50 books by an author of color in time for next year's IBARW. It's all self-moderated, but people are telling about the books they've read and it's inspiring.

[livejournal.com profile] greensilver asked us to talk about things of yay, and when I went to go look up Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time (I was only coming up with the later two books in the series for some reason), Powell's (www.powells.com is awesome) told me they had a first edition in stock.

Which is now *my* first edition, because it was fairly inexpensive. I've bought a few of these over the years when I see them and I can afford them; this seems to be my only requirement. If I see it, I know the book and love it, and can afford the first edition, chances are I've clicked 'add to cart' before I finish blinking. It's just a non-question. Kinda like those couple I have that are autographed, because Powell's does that a lot. If I really want to read the book and there's an autographed version? Mine.

I have love for books.

But, you know, the last time I read a book? It was probably on a plane or something where I was separated from the internets for a while.

I miss it. I miss paper and print and the weight of a book too good to put down even though you're exhausted and having to prop the cover on the other pillow and blink a bit too often as you read. And my failure to actually read much really hasn't stopped me from buying books, oddly, so I have this backlog of fascinating, awesome looking books--but because I can't see the header and word count, it's hard to compare and contrast to fanfic when I'm deciding what to read on any given day.

So, I think I'm going to slow down on fanfic reading for a while and focus on books, just a bit. I've started Imaro, which is based on African cultures I've walked in and spoken with, I've sat in the cattle-dung huts and watched the men in their bright red plaid play a game of stones I know as Mombasa and they know as something completely different. I still yearn for the author to describe the layout of the temporary villages, the smell of straw and cattle, to explain why he is dressing his protagonist in animal skins rather than the bright woven fabrics and beads the Maasai I met favored. I am trying to forgive him for focusing on describing his protagonists prowess in battle, though, instead of the sensory memories that I have (after all, he's a boy, the author.)

After that, I'm going to read After Dark by Haruki Murakami, and a host of other books what I've hoarded without reading lately.

I think, just for fun, I'm going to follow [livejournal.com profile] rydra_wong and [livejournal.com profile] carenejeans and sign up for [livejournal.com profile] 50books_poc, and watch and see how much I need to shift my perspective to spend a reasonable percentage of my reading time on authors of color. I have that kick-ass list from ibarw, After Dark and Imaro are both from that list. So, I shall include links over to [livejournal.com profile] 50books_poc whenever I post a short synopsis. You'll hear about it if I read an incredible book, though, I'm sure.

Next post will be a recs post of recent fannishness, though. First things first: clear out the to-rec folder. Then sit down and read a book.

I do solemnly swear to write my [livejournal.com profile] reel_sg1 fic, though. I just have to decide if it's Cameron/Teal'c or Jack/Daniel or some completely different pairing (in this case used in a mostly gen/friendshippy sense as the movie is actiony) just to shock you all. Maybe.... Teal'c and DANIEL? Would your heads explode?

Have I told you about "Library Thing"? Here's the link, I'm there as jenlev
http://www.librarything.com/

It's a great way to see who's reading what etc. And I've just started re-reading the Green Knowe series by L.M. Boston. Gods, so wonderful to hold a book and immerse in silence into the story and the characters.

And have fun with the reel_sg1 whomever you chose!

This makes me seriously happy....after all the addiction is something no one should be alone with. *veg*

Hee!

Er, although there should still be a coffee break. :::smooch:::

Well, yes, but the coffee break will be filled with perusing your library, obviously.

Because you are evil and getting me addicted to new and nifty things.

To wit:

Which is going in my bio profile now. *sigh*

Hee! A friend of mine and her husband talked me into it after much grumbling and dragging of feet I relented. And then ended up spending four hours entering my entire library (Er, the one at my condo as the family one doesn't count I've decided.) into the damn thing.

:::wanders off whistling in an entirely evil manner:::

Awesome! I look forward to what you write about teh books. I tend to do a lot of reading because I use public transportation. What I don't do is write about what I've read, most times.

It is so strange how little time I have lately... maybe when the sports season ends I'll find myself with enough time to do these things I totally want to do.

I like the idea that I can write a one-two paragraph rec or review, though. My first inclination is a full-on English class essay, which is daunting, as you may imagine. :)

Hee! Life is really very glorious right now. I could wish for a little more free time, but really... I'm content to wait for the natural ebb and flow to cycle around.

I have at least two stories half-written. I really wish I could find the headspace to finish them.

Yay for books!

(but be sure to read my foray into Daniel/Cameron: http://sidlj.livejournal.com/66662.html, because I've been looking forward to your opinion.)

Yay books! I've slacked off on offline reading this summer; I need to get back into the swing of things for Fall.

I think Fall may be when I actually get into the habit--right now it's more a yearning for the time to actually do it.

I will, though. I have this wonderful stack of books by my bed and I want to introduce myself.

Whereas I am finding myself completely unable to read books at the moment, and am still elbows deep in fanfic. I was only able to read the last HP because the internet took the week off. ;-)

Cameron/Teal'c or Jack/Daniel PLEASE! Daniel/Teal'c would make my head explode, and it's so hard to get the brains off the monitor.

From: [identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_minxy_/
Hee! It's not a romantic comedy or anything, so it would be Daniel & Teal'c, not Daniel/Teal'c. Friendship. And it might be the best way to go with this... now I said it jokingly, I'm kind of getting attached to the idea

I solemnly promise to provide you with really good cleaning solutions for your monitor.

Well, of course I'm greedy for J/D, but Daniel&Teal'c friendship is totally groovy and not head-splodey at all. :-)

rydra_wong is reading 50books_poc, or something like that.

All credit is due to [livejournal.com profile] carenejeans for starting it; I am only a hapless innocent lured into her web of evil and book purchasing *g*.

(And your compilation of the sf/f list is being pimped like whoa.)

*GLEE*

I think I shall go edit in credit for [livejournal.com profile] carenejeans now, totally belatedly, but with the best intentions.

(Imaro is such a *boys* book. I'm thirty pages in and there have already been two fights, and my favorite character is one who disappeared in the prolog. Ooof.)

I know what you mean about the book thing - I've been realizing the same thing. Only I'm so used to the instant gratification of fanfic that sometimes I have trouble reading full books - but you just cannot curl up with a computer the same way.

And yet, I keep collecting more and more books...
(though since my day job is now sorting through and shelving books all day part of me never wants to see 'em after work now...)

And...I swear I thought I had something actually worth saying here. Oh! Yes! THERE IS NOT ENOUGH TEAL'C DANIEL FRIENDSHIP in this fandom! Really truly! *pokes you*
