I'm excited, I've a list of things I didn't get to today but am going to do inbetween *loading the truck* and picking up [livejournal.com profile] kres at the station tomorrow... yeah.

So I'm uploading music, because I'm making sure we've got plenty of listenin' for the road, and because I'm constantly adding to the Supernatural Mix I've got going on = the best road tripping music evar. And because there's nothing left to pack in the house, it's all the stuff outside of the house that I forgot. *face/palm*

So: Robert Johnson

Those of you who are Supernatural fen have been introduced to Mr. Johnson through the episode ‘Crossroads’ which details the popular story (that Johnson told in his songs) that he sold his soul to the devil at the crossroads, in exchange for the ability to play music.

If you’ve seen Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? You’ve also heard whisps of this tale as the boys pick up a Robert Johnson character *at* the crossroads and he helps them cut a record. It's based on the Odyssey, obviously.

But here’s the thing: Mr. Johnson may or may not have sold his soul to the devil at the crossroads in order to do it, but the music he was playing in the 30’s has been influencing American music (specifically Chicago style blues) ever since. He’s influenced artists right down to Eric Clapton, who calls Johnson his seminal influence, and the music the finest he’s ever heard.

If you are a fan or an American, this is part of your canon.

Robert Johnson, at sendspace

So, this music should be a part of every Supernatural fan’s music mix. I’ve included six songs here, out of the only 30 that Johnson recorded before he died in his 20s (he was always convinced the hellhound would get him, in the end it was just a jealous husband poisoning the dude just as someone was trying to offer him his big break. That was in Greenwood, Mississippi in 1938 according to the liner notes I have here.)

(But then again, Johnson was crazy handsome by all accounts—meaning the two images we have of him, a widower and a womanizer, and sorta raunchy judging by his songs.)

(Also, he’s usually convinced that, even with a hellhound on his tail, that what he really needs is the company of a good-looking woman. So there you go.)

[Actually, we might as well take a little side-note for any Brits in the crowd who are mentally translating the word 'raunchy' to 'blue', which means smutty or risque in British, but in the American parlons is equated with being sad or depressed. This kind of music, called the blues, is exactly why, though I couldn't tell you which came first.]

I’ve included the classic blues song ‘Walking Blues’ which starts out with the most basic of blues formulas (this was in a really funny forward I had once but can’t find now): First line is ‘I woke up this morning,” then you tell them the first thing you did, and why you got the blues, then you repeat those lines. Continue until you think of something else to sing about.

Woke up this mornin’, feelin’ round for my shoes.
Know by that I got these old walkin’ blues, well.
Woke up this mornin’, feelin’ round for my shoes.
But you know by that, I got these old walkin’ blues.

Lord, I feel like blowin’ my old lonesome horn…

I told you he was kinda raunchy. I mean, there’s a song called “I Believe I’ll Dust My Broom” and I have no idea what it’s about, but I’m just sure it’s raunchy as HELL.

Anyway, we also have a song called “Kindhearted Woman Blues” which breaks the cardinal rule of writing a classic blues song, which is that the phrase ‘I got me a good woman’ does not make for good blues, unless there is something really wrong with her.

Case in point (defined by Robert Johnson, thank you very much)

She’s a kindhearted woman, she studies evil all the time
She’s a kindhearted woman, she studies evil all the time
You well’s to kill me, as to have it on your mind.

Anyway, you also have “Me and the Devil Blues”, “Crossroad Blues” and “Hellhound on my Tail”, for your Supernatural mix.

Crossroad Blues:

I went to the crossroads, fell down on my knees
I went to the crossroads, fell down on my knees
Asked the Lord above, have mercy now, save poor Bob if you please

Standin' at the crossroads, tried to flag a ride
Whee-hee, I tried to flag a ride
Didn't nobody seem to know me, everybody pass me by

Standin' at the crossroads, risin' sun goin' down
Standin' at the crossroads baby, the risin' sun goin' down
I believe to my soul now, po' Bob is sinkin' down

And, just for fun, we have Mr. Clapton paying tribute (he usually has at least one Johnson blues song on an album, but he released an entire album just of Johnson covers called Me and Mr. Johnson, if you’re interested.)

Hellhound on my Tail (Clapton cover)

And Crossroads (Cream cover)

Robert Johnson Me And The Devil Blues:

Early this morning, I heard you knock upon my door
I said, "Hello, Satan - I believe it's time to go"

Me and the devil, We were walking side by side
I'm gonna love your woman, Satan, Till I'm satisfied

She said, "You may know your ways, But I've been dogged around"
"You may know your ways, But I can hear you come to dog me around"
Must be that evil spirit, Way deep down in the ground

We'll bury my body/ down by the highway-side
That way my evil spirit, Can rise up, take a Greyhound bus and ride

Oh my God. I'm off! [livejournal.com profile] kres and I will be a little truck full of newly employed, road tripping, Supernatural listening, SG-1 seeking fen. Wooooo!!!!!

RAWR. Some nice music you got there, dear. I hope there'll be some space for Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Sting, REM, Metallica (WHAT) and sundry.

Your link to Johnson picture is broken, you might want to fix that.

Also: "little truck full of newly employed" cracked me up :D

Will you have a blow-dryer, btw? 'Cause my bag is full and I can't believe how feminine that sounds and now I'm really embarrased...

Have blowdryer! Have everything a newly employed girl would need in a new city!

Am packing the last of the stuff tonight, so I'll be sure it goes in the overnight bag.

(I just got a mental image of myself out in the back of the truck first thing in the mornings, staring at my dresser with a 'hm, what shall I wear today?' look on my face while other motel goers walk by and give me strange looks)

Did you get my e-mail with Taselby's coordinates? I'm taking the laptop, but just in case.

:) My dad is a Chicago blues harmonica player. I knew about Robert Johnson *long* before I saw him on SPN.

Anyway, have an awesome road trip and an awesome move! I hope it's safe and more fun than a barrel of monkeys!

Oh thank you for connecting it forward. Clapton's really good about giving credit where it's due. (I have a live album version of Cream doing Crossroads, and it's gorgeous -- mix of psychedelia and sorrow.)

Did you read the NYTimes essay this Sunday about Buddy Bolden? Another who died young who helped shape turn of the century vernacular music. Mostly he is slotted into the genealogy of jazz, but the songs of his that survive (transmitted and probably changed by Jelly Roll Morton) are up-tempo blues.

Thanks so much for the music...I love Robert Johnson, and Eric Clapton really does the blues right (I love electric guitar blues), so I took his, too. Have fun, drive carefully, and...um, did I mention have fun?

Took the Robert Johnson zip and the Clapton cover. Loved hearing the music on Supernatural, so it's great to have it to listen to now. Thank you for sharing with us.
