minxy: Teal'c raises a hand to say "hey". (Default)
[personal profile] minxy
For [livejournal.com profile] astrogirl2, who is new to SG-1 fandom, and posting about every new ep as she sees them. She's just finished season 1, with it's highlights and it's lowlights, and has been informed that it's not just the (sometimes underwhelming) canon in this 'verse, it's the fanfiction. Yes.

So here it is, all rerecs (lifted from other lists), all specifically season 1:

Gen:

[livejournal.com profile] ballroomblitz wrote Season 1 (!) Jack, with Sam and Daniel and Kowalski, with all those early relationships just spot on. Gen. Dreaming and the Geneva Convention. Feeeeeed the new author.

This is hysterical. It's amazing what one canon sentence can do: [livejournal.com profile] betacandy's Acid Worms which is Teal'c's take on the circumstances surrounding the drink that made Carter take off her... on P3X-595 (a quote from Broca Divide).

Sam and Teal'c from [livejournal.com profile] psychofilly: How Teal'c Discovered Make-up, or as I named it, Sam and Teal'c have a bonding moment and Hammond has to poke Jack in the ribs to make him behave.

This is bound to be one of my favorite Jack character studies ever, and it's Jack and Daniel friendship oriented, so that's a plus, and Jack's protectiveness arc is so nicely drawn and I just hadn't thought of it that way, it's really nice. Elementariness. It's [livejournal.com profile] kellifer_fic's work.

Betacandy, at [livejournal.com profile] betacandy_sgfic has posted a brilliant Janet's introduction to the team fic, S1, just post Emancipation. Assess This, PG, gen. Fabulous voice, amazing instant relationships as well as those that take a little longer to settle in, really good observation skills from Janet and I love the sense that this is not the only thing she's done today, not the wierdest, and possibly not the most important, but goodness, it left an impression.

Also [livejournal.com profile] cofax7 wrote a brilliant team first impressions fic. The women (plural because I am so, so biased) are there even when they aren't, and that's a pretty strong team right there. Turnover, early season 1, gen/teen.

[livejournal.com profile] ldyanne's Scaling the Wall, which works up to Teal'c's betrayal in Children of the Gods with impressive momentum.

A Circle of One's Own by Jonah in the Whale, all about Colonel O'Neill's insecurity about standardized testing, but it's really worth it for Teal'c's perplexity and Daniel's objections to them at all. Plus it's just witty and in character. Team, earlier season, gen, but Jack and Daniel's friendship is prominent.

[livejournal.com profile] surrealphantast wrote a great team-night poker game in which Sam is spectacularly bad at bluffing titled Jello Shots (gen, team, G, very witty) that [livejournal.com profile] katiedammit has prequeled with a Sam and Janet UST-ish (it's almost gen. Very nearly. Still G rated, work safe! Fun for the whole family!) ficlet about what had happened to the rest of the Jello Shots: Never Bluff a Sucker. Which features Sam still being unable to lie, which is so entertaining, and Janet labeling herself 'jailbait', which, frankly, sounds a lot like something I would say. Early seasons, team, gen.

Sid ([livejournal.com profile] sidlj) brings da surreal with early season Daniel's dreamscape. I'd call this gen or canon relationship het, but seriously surreal dreams from a guy in serious internal conflict cross lots of boundaries. Jack is a fantastic reassuring presence. Nightscape, rated R.

jennghis kahn's ([livejournal.com profile] surrealphantast's) Ghost in the Machine. One helluva ride through a mission gone wrong in which they are all skilled, unique, respecting each other and working together so seamlessly that it is hard to imagine how they could have done it if all four hadn't been there. Really good yarn. Gen, long.

I wrote Janet dealing with SG-1 during Season 1 for the remix/redux ficathon: Bedside Manners, S1, gen.

[livejournal.com profile] nandamai = Nanda wrote for [livejournal.com profile] cofax7 in the [livejournal.com profile] sg1teamficathon a wonderful team piece with really nice Teal'c presence and dialog. Early season 1 SG-1 team, gen. Wavelength or, How I Stopped Worrying and Learned To Love My Job.

Timeless:

The best Teal'c fic ever: Brilliantly unusual perspectives, great voices and kick-ASS insights from [livejournal.com profile] katie_m: Almost A Statesman Teal'c, gen, a CLASSIC. All Teal'c fans must read, and I think, regardless of how much you've seen of the series. This is just the first Teal'c fic you should read.

[livejournal.com profile] poohmusings wrote an absolutely hysterical piece titled WWZD? for [livejournal.com profile] splash_the_cat. It's just, I mean, *collapses into giggles at the mere THOUGHT of that fic*. Though I do have a sort of whacked sense of humor... but hey, clearly I'm not the only one.

[livejournal.com profile] katie_m wrote an extraordinary Sam POV piece for [livejournal.com profile] nandamai called A Heavenward Striving. I don't want to say too much about it except that I really wish there had been an episode like this, and really, I thought Sam's voice, and all the character's choices were fantastic.

Veil by [livejournal.com profile] eve11 in the [livejournal.com profile] sg1teamficathon. Has a magnificent alien culture, rich and deep and affecting. Watch Teal'c interact with Sam and help her, only to be unable to help himself. Jack feel helpless in the inability to yell or talk or touch and yet be the one who instinctively understands... then there is eve's extremely competant use of mathmatics as a centering chant for Sam, and Daniel's completely in character reactions to everyone.

Somnambulist by C. L. Kamnikar is a fantastic gen (author claims a leaning towards Sam/Daniel) piece about Daniel searching for coffee in the wee hours of the morning. Oh, the insanity.

[livejournal.com profile] eve11 wrote one of my very favorite fics in the [livejournal.com profile] sg1teamficathon, and THEN went all noble and stuff and stepped up to pinch-hit when another author didn't come through. Even though this is past deadline, it's marvelous teamy goodness featuring our heroes in prison and doing their respective things, and it shines the brighter for being posted on it's own. Folsom Prison Blues. SG-1 gen.

Surface Tension by [livejournal.com profile] troyswann. It's an amazing Sam centered fic, with a nice thread of her friendship with Daniel running through it. One of my favorite Sam fics.

Pairings:

I will find you some Sam/Jack in later seasons, promise.

Jack/Daniel:

Jack/Daniel with a gun kink. First time, season 1 by [livejournal.com profile] padawan_ally: Defense Training. NC-17.

[livejournal.com profile] janedavitt's Crash Course Part 1! with links to the rest. YAAAAAY! Early Jack/Daniel. When they were still figuring out how to work together, but already had that chemistry. And the hair, natch. Read for great frustration with each other, marvelous early characterization and amazing dialog.

Because I think everyone should know Salieri: [livejournal.com profile] troyswann's Willing. Creepy, S1. Lyrical and one of the first among this fandom's writers. PG-13.

Recover and be impressed with her ability to be silly with Elvis Has Left the Building, which I shall cache as timeless. Or something.

I also want you to meet Komos = [livejournal.com profile] paian, Dith = [livejournal.com profile] raqs and Otter = [livejournal.com profile] agentotter and [livejournal.com profile] destina and [livejournal.com profile] sdraevn, but they are often Jack/Daniel writers, and Jack and Daniel don't really come into their own as a pairing until the, what, third season? I can't find specifically season 1 stories from them; maybe they will tip me off if I've missed one. I shall look for them with other pairings.

ETA: the lovely and gracious [livejournal.com profile] destina points me to a Torment of Tantalus AU, in which they don't make it back. A Heart for Every Fate, which is a classic, wonderful, marvelous, heartbreaking...all that stuff.

Sam/Daniel:

HA. I win. [livejournal.com profile] agentotter wrote a snippet for [livejournal.com profile] cofax7 that is amazing early Sam and Daniel friendship, when Sam was wrapping her brain around going to other planets and Daniel was adjusting to so much loss, and all about a frog. Protective Resemblence, PG, gen.

I think this is fine for S1: A nice friendship to lean on if you need more, plus there's a crinkly Daniel-frown: Unreasonable by Dith (=[livejournal.com profile] raqs).

ETA2: I love my flist! More links in the comments below.

Yay! A new convert! I have some specific episode-related fics here (http://green-grrl.livejournal.com/20066.html) -- all Jack/Daniel unless otherwise stated. As soon as [livejournal.com profile] astrogirl2 gets through Serpent's Lair, she can read my first season 2 rec by the only gen writer I love whom I don't see on your awesome list above: Redbyrd.

Here are a few other recs I put together for a newbie friend a while back, that don't need later season canon knowledge to enjoy. (Again, J/D.)

Drums (http://www.jamspaddedcell.co.uk/viewstory.php?sid=15) by Alyse -- mmmm, local customs....
Kawoosh (http://www.versaphile.com/anais/kawoosh.htm) by Anais -- lovely/sweet
No Man is Born an Angler (http://www.drizzle.com/~eliade/sg_angler.html) by Anna S. -- a Stranded fic. ;-)
Polishing Wood (http://chelle.slashcity.org/stargate/polishing.shtml) by Chelle -- *snicker*
Love Bites (http://www.livejournal.com/users/brainofck/85658.html) and Sacrificies (http://www.livejournal.com/users/brainofck/74052.html) by CK -- cracky goodness!
Bright Chains (http://lyricalmagic.com/bc.html) by Destina -- god I love Aliens Made Them Do It fics ;-)
One Bare Hour (http://www.area52hkh.net/asd/dmarley/1barehour.php) by Dorothy Marley -- angsty
Reverence (http://www.jd-divas.com/fabrisse/reverence.shtml) by Fabrisse -- beautiful "PWP"
Between the Shadow and the Soul (http://www.geocities.com/thegrrrl2002/stargate/01/shadow.html) by The Grrrl -- can't beat those local rituals
My First Stargate Story (http://prillalar.com/fic/stories/000253.php) by Halrloprillalar will scare you away from reading un-recced fics. It's a perfect sendup of what's bad out there in SG-1 ficland.
Been There, Done That (http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/feistydanny/beenthere.htm) and With Flying Colors (http://www.area52hkh.net/ast/teand/colours.php) by Teand -- cracky good fun
Penny for Your Thoughts (http://www.alldanielfic.com/viewstory.php?sid=215) by Xochiquetzl -- more cracky good fun, telepathic style

Oooooh, all good ones! I held back on the pairings because AstroGirl wasn't really feeling them yet, so when she starts to see the appeal, that's when I'll lay on the pairings. Right now I think all she sees is Sam/Daniel, so she's a little perplexed by the two main pairings.

Nice list, though! I love my flist, feeding my (re)reading habit. *g*

From: [identity profile] green-grrl.livejournal.com
Erk! To me S/D is just SO brother/sister! And I have some of the same problems with them as I do with S/J -- I think both men are a little too emotionally messed up and prone to bitchiness for sunshine-and-intellect Sam. In other words, perfect for each other. But that's just OTP me... ;-)

(And it is hard to pair Daniel with anyone besides Sha're before FiaD. I think the two best early season J/D fics that stay close to canon are Torn and One Bare Hour, because they do take on that issue.)

*feeds your habit*

I think it's more that in Season 1, there isn't a lot of intimacy between any of them, but as chemistry goes, it's hard to deny that Sam and Daniel had an instant geek recognition and subsequent cuteness first season. A lot of the rest of the characters really deepened their relationships over the next few years, but Sam and Daniel instantly connected.

AG's point was 'where is the Jack/Daniel chemistry? Where is the Sam/Jack chemistry? I don't really see it' and I more or less agree with her. It's going to take a little while to develop.

Yeah, they let the J/D friendship quietly develop in the background (CotG, Cold Lazarus). And some of their cute banter-shared brain act shows up starting in The Nox, and their deeper connection in Torment of Tantalus and Fire and Water. But the first year is a lot about Daniel and Jack's respective griefs, and their adjustment to developing new goals as part of SG-1. The Serpent's Lair really kicks them into slash territory. ;-)

I really like Towards the Flame by Yum. It's a great follow up to Fire and Water.

Another follow up to Fire and Water is Pepe's Crossing Bridges. This one is definately J/D, but it holds a special place in my heart as it's one of the first J/D I ever read.

But, man, between all of these and all the added recs in the comments, I'll probably have finished watching the series before I've finished reading all this fic! Not that I'm complaining... :)
