Now, I don't wish to give the impression that I let my boss alone get to me this much, so let me clarify:
1. There is a chip in my windshield. No--make that two. Darned weather and it's associated gravel on the roads.
2. My gas tank lid thing no longer fits in its space and had to be pried open today, which was successful once I got out my tools, but the gas station attendant guy (this is Oregon, there is no self-service at gas stations) tried at first with my debit card and broke the corner off. *sigh*
3. Vancouver fell through. I'm trying to be over that, so we shan't speak any more about it. Unless, you know, we do.
4. My advisor failed to even attempt to call me yet again today. I did call him, though. He didn't answer the phone.
On account of which, bad mood. *grumpy face*
Of the good:
1. Fannish people, who accept my resignation from the newsletter graciously and with aplomb. Not everyone has aplomb, I would like to say, but
splash_the_cat has it in spades, if you can have aplomb in spades. She is nifty. Also, and perhaps importantly, I am resigning due to of the good thing #3, below, so don't worry.
Splash the very nifty, hard-working maintainer of newsletter, is soon to be without a slash links gatherer for SG-1. Any kind soul out there care to step up and point to any extra fic you find not on the watch list already? I will happily pass on my list of LJs that I watch for that purpose. Email sg1_debrief at gmail.com, please. Pretty pretty please? Thank you.
2. My parents are home and being pretty hilarious. Their attempts to blame Canada to make me feel better about there not being funding for me there are getting progressively more ridiculous.
3. Asia in a little over a week! YYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYY! Do need to sort out the overnight before the flight, though.
If you wanted to entertain me, and you needn't, obviously, but I'm not too proud. Anyway, if you wanted to entertain me, you might:
1. Point me to a place I might *ahem* the first half of this season of Supernatural. I might be watching the last disc of S1 tonight, and can record the rest from now on, but you know. New fandom, shiny, catching up and all that. email handle at livejournal and all that.
2. Write a ficlet entitled or including the words in the subject of some spam sent to you recently. For example, in my inbox today, I saw the subject line "quintillion coronet", which is kind of awesome. I also saw the subject "puppeteer rectal", but that makes me cringe.
3. Write me a Rome ficlet that makes Passover all better. Comfort for the hurt, if you will.
I have some recs, but not enough to outweigh the whinging in this post, so they'll get their own post at some point. Plus, I do need to wait and see whether enjoying that genderswapping kid!fic thing is something I'm going to admit to or blame on my mood.

Date: 2007-01-20 02:14 am (UTC)Also: Heeeeeeee!
Also: Did you watch all of them? I know I told you to skip stuff, but there are MOMENTS in the episodes I told you to skip, moments the fandom is built on. (Like: "Saving people, hunting things" in Wendigo). Hm?
spn icon #2
Date: 2007-01-20 05:10 am (UTC)I pretty much skipped to M's recommendations and have watched all since. I'm thinking that I'll go back and rewatch a few if only for the "I miss conversations that don't start with 'so, this killer car...'" banter. Waiting for the perfect moment to suggest to Dad that he start watching them with me too. Yes.
You're not repentant. I can tell. Alas, I shall miss many eps whilst traveling, but I have faith that tivo will record them for me and keep them safe until I return.

Which basically is "do as M says"... Heee. I'm not sure his ego can get any healthier, but he'll be pleased to hear that :)=
Apparently here also resistance is futile :D

here you go....
Date: 2007-01-19 02:34 pm (UTC)*******************
They weren't really worried by the time Sam showed up in the guest hut. Radio contact was sporadic at best on Aglana, and she had connected long enough about a half-hour ago to check in, apologize for being late, and inform them she was headed back. There was no indication of danger, and in fact the locals had been more than accomodating, with everything from trade offers, to biology discussions, to the local version of coffee and danishes.
"Strained merra root," Daniel had corrected, downing a second cup. "And it's called a 'fenlo,' not a danish."
Danishes aside, there was always the (sadly less than unlikely) chance that these smiling, good-natured granola folks were about to turn them over to a System Lord, or try to use their minds to power ancient generators, or whatever else evil good-natured granola folks did to pass the time. As Teal'c stood guard over the snack table, Jack drummed his fingers against his thigh and took a step toward a pace.
"She'll be here any minute." Daniel said from the green rocking chair in the corner. His eyes didn't leave the large leather-bound book in his lap.
True to Daniel's word, Carter tromped through the door not a minute later, a muddy mess but still in one piece. Jack silently added another tick to the "Good Guys" column on his mental tally board under "Aglana."
"Oh my god," Sam said, dumping her pack and stretching out. She took a deep breath, and her stomach gave a growl that could be heard across the room. "Is that coffee?"
"Strained--" Daniel started.
"Yes," Jack said. "Have some. Don't ruin your dinner."
Sam knocked the heels of her boots, one after the other, against the slate doorframe, before making a beeline for the snacks. Teal'c had already poured her a cup, and handed it to her with a leaf-wrapped danish. She cursorily wiped her hands off on the front of her vest before accepting the food, and really, it didn't seem to last in the outside world long enough to get any germs, anyway.
"Do you know the kind of people who just never let you get out of a conversation?" Sam said, crumbling the leaf in her hand and tossing it toward what they'd assumed was a trash can.
"Haven't a clue--" Jack started, at the same time Daniel said, "Don't start," and casually flipped a page in his book.
"I mean, Fydori's a nice guy, and they're all excellent biologists," she continued. She looked around and then lowered her voice. "But sometimes it's like dealing with an entire litter of over-eager puppies."
No one had to say Better than the alternative, because they all knew it was true. But one of the good things about dealing with normal, non-life-threatening situations off-world was the chance to complain about the little things. They all seemed to do it, warranted or not, in some cases.
Re: here you go....
Date: 2007-01-19 02:37 pm (UTC)Sam sunk into a rocker by the table and toed her way out of her boots. "It didn't help that Fydori was making moon eyes at me the whole time."
"Moon eyes?" Teal'c asked.
Carter sighed. "Help me out here, Daniel."
"What?" He put a finger on the page to keep his place, and pushed up his glasses.
"Well, you've had plenty of experience with them."
Daniel looked up. "I don't . . . what?"
Sam stopped rocking, planting her socked feet on the floor. "You mean you don't notice when someone has a crush on you? Like, right out of the gate?"
"And you can tell?" Daniel countered.
"We can always tell."
"We?" Jack raised an eyebrow.
Sam shrugged. "It's a girl thing. We can always tell."
"I have found this to be true as well." Teal'c said, frowning at his danish. As the others watched, he polished the rest of it off in one bite, as if suddenly coming to the conclusion that the poor pastry deserved it.
He looked up to see three pairs of eyes still on him. Without a word, he picked up another danish.
"I was trying to make small talk," Sam continued. "One comment about how pretty the birds were, and he just wouldn't let it go. 'Yes, lovely birds here, you must like birds so I'll list them all, and later I can give you a wildlife tour.'"
"Um--" Daniel said.
"It was like disentangling from a briar patch to get out of the subject. Now he wants me to come by tomorrow to see an oak-crested meter-ampere or something like that."
Daniel was in the middle of a sip of coffee, and he gave a snort and a hurried swallow, rocking swiftly forward. In something they must have taught at archeology school as an alternative to the "don't drink and rock with manuscripts" section, he managed to spill the rest of the cup's contents everywhere except on the book in his lap.
Sam looked at him in horror. "It's not a bird, is it?"
"No..." Daniel said, trying to contain his laughter. "So um, were you listening when I briefed everyone about metaphor on Aglana?"
"Oh god." Sam put her hands to her forehead. "I hate other cultures."
Jack reached for a danish, but Teal'c had apparently cleaned out the plate while no one was looking. So he settled for pouring the last bit of coffee into his cup, and tossed a pack towel over to Daniel to take care of the spill. Daniel was laughing too hard to offer any advice, so it was up to the colonel's wisdom to handle this latest snag.
"Just... politely decline," he said.
No sweat.

Date: 2007-01-19 06:01 pm (UTC)Oh, alright fine. It's With Shifting Change (http://ladycat777.livejournal.com/829726.html) by ladycat777, in which half the SGA team stumbles into a machine that they oughtn't. Genderswapping, kid!fic (two different people) slash, John/Rodney. I'd give it an R rating. It really did entertain me, the interpersonal relationships were very interesting.
There's also cofax7 & co's Supernatural genderswap AU, in which it's not two brothers, it's a brother and a sister. Naturally, it's stunningly we'll written, but mostly little vingnettes at this point. I think they're surprised by it turning into a 'verse. SPN genderswitch part 5 (http://cofax7.livejournal.com/412210.html). I really like the cute bartender one too. They're gen, and no spoilers except for the premise of the show and general S1 stuff.

Date: 2007-01-19 06:51 pm (UTC)Yay --thanks! I love me the genderfucks. And the kid!fics. Two grreat tastes that taste great together! (The only ones I feel guilty about are the ones that are poorly written, but even those I'll often read to the end, just for the fix. Ai!)
Thank you! *gives you puppies*

You are marvelous.

My advisor is an idiot, no argument there. I didn't know exactly why he wanted to talk, but he never did call.
You did write a Rome fic. P'raps with my next bout of reccing I shall loudly rec Rome fic. Won't be new to you, most of it, but it might be fun to reread, and I know rydra_wong is new enough to the fandom that she mightn't have seen it. Yes, I think so.
You are marvelous.
Love you too.
