Annual fic round-up.
Dec. 28th, 2006 09:14 pmIt's hard to believe that I've been in fandom long enough to be writing fanfiction, and that I've been at that long enough to be writing my second annual fanfiction roundup, imaginatively titled:
What I wrote last year in Stargate 'verse:
First fic last year was the January posting of what was, at that point, the smuttiest fic I'd ever written. I think I called it that mostly because it involved a threesome, and then fade-to-black femmeslash, and it was a crossover fic. I've managed to round out the year by writing several more threesomes, thought, so the dubious honor of 'mostest smuttiest' is debatable. The Principle of Exclusion (Sam/John/Rodney and Sam/Teyla, NC-17). I love Sam and Teyla together. I would really love to see more fic featuring them, they're a wonderful pairing.
Next was Campfirelight, Campfire Stories (gen S9), which came directly from reading prompts for the
tealc_ficathon, and possibly was a result of coming up with a random prompt for my own requests and then having that spark a story idea. There is at least one other story that was inspired by prompts from that ficathon that was not my ficathon assignment. Most inspirational ficathon ever, apparently.
Bedside Manners (Janet, S1, PG, Author's Commentary) was my remix contribution, and a very interesting experience. It was fun to write Janet, and much much easier than I thought to make her accessible. Sometimes it's hardest to write about your own area; sometimes, it's really not.
The Eye is not Satisfied with Seeing (Cameron/Teal'c, Arthur's Mantle tag, NC-17) is when I finally got Cam and Teal'c to sleep together. Took a lot of talking and courting with those two, and they kept insisting on being terribly chivalrous with one another. Fortunately, once they got past the poetry, I think they were pretty hot in bed together. This fic was dedicated to
taselby, though it was not even slightly written to the prompts she gave me; that fic came later in the year.
Perchance to Dream (Teal'c and Sam, S6-7, PG) was my
tealc_ficathon contribution and has one of my favorite Teal'c opening lines ever: When Teal’c started to dream, he believed he was hallucinating again. Roxxors. I had really intended for this to go to a sexy place, being as how for a long time I really thought my prompt specified a relationship, but I really love how sweet Sam and Teal'c were as friends in this.
For the
apocalyptothon I wrote The Sky is Falling (Cameron and Sam, S9ish, PG). I suppose the end of the world might imply that the world actually, you know, ended, but my prompt actually specified Cameron and Sam in Europe, so it can't have been all that bad. Actually, it was really fun to play with how quickly they individually adapted to their situation, and then in parallel how they reacted to the other one doing it at a different pace.
Self Assembly Required (Sam, S7, NC-17) Sam was fussing getting comfortable in her bed, the sounds of her house and the conversation with Mark ringing in her ears. She was irritating herself: she was tired and she should be sleeping. This was the fic that really got me thinking about Sam. It was a reaction to the friendship in Perchance to Dream and prompted a huge meta post on Sam ultimately. But it's the big question, I think, for Sam regarding relationships: is what she thinks she wants really what she needs. This fic predates the relationship with Pete by a few days, or maybe a week or two.
Poor Sam. She really is emotionally blind sometimes. The Sam Meta is here. And linked from within the Sam recs post now too.
Stadium Seating: in which Teal'c and Cameron continue to go a'courting and be incredibly chivalrous to one another. For the record, if you want to write two characters impulsively falling into bed together? These are not your boys. They will stay in the kitchen and just talk and be perfectly happy and G-rated about it. Except for the odd taunting maneuver with a spoon. This is the fic that was written to
taselby's prompts, though by then I think I was the only one who remembered what the original prompts were (Cam and Teal'c and ice cream, if you were wondering. I still remember.)
Took a little break after (and during) that one and did some RL writing. A lot of RL writing. RL writing that almost broke me but is now done and a source of substantial pride. Yes. Enough about that.
I got back into the swing with yet another fic inspired by the tealc_ficathon prompts. This one was from katie_m's prompt of Teal'c backstory, and a result of visiting my friend's nephews for the first time in probably 5 years. They grew up a lot and the eldest is now in an incredibly awkward 14-year-old phase, poor kid. He'll be fine, he has that gravitas of an introverted person that you just know is thinking all the time, but he tried, with me, to talk about things he was interested in that he knew I did... he'll be so competent at anything he tries to do. And he already has enough height that you know he'll be athletic and good at it. So Footsoldiers on Uneven Ground is partly for S. Good luck to ya, kid, though I'm sure you won't need it.
Did I mention that that fic was about Bra'tac? Well, it started out about Teal'c's adolescence, anyway. Ended up about Bra'tac and Teal'c's clearly amazing mother who Is Never Spoken Of. There was an addendum to that story where Teal'c speaks of his mother, actually. Oh yes, here it is: ficlet for troyswann.
Lastly, I return to my smutty, threesome roots for the year to write Penumbra (Cameron/Sam/Daniel, NC-17) for the
dark_gate ficathon. Oh, you crazy kids with your crazy coping mechanisms. This has been such a year for Teal'c, though, as well as Cameron, that even when writing Cameron/Sam/Daniel, I obviously had to ground everything in Teal'c. Oh well, they are a team in their fuckedupedness. What can I say? It was a dark fic.
Writing a Teal'c based fic and then throwing him into a fic about a threesome that doesn't include him led me to write a bit of Teal'c Meta, though. Possibly my most creative contribution to fandom.
The last thing I'll post for the year is my
3_ships piece which will go live on New Year's Eve, I think. Because the authors names will be screened for a week, though, I can't really tell you much about it except the obvious that it's a threesome, and the possibly obvious fandom of Stargate. I did offer to write some others, but that's the one I was assigned.
So there you are, I started out thinking I was writing such the smutty piece at the start of the year and then trumped it with multiple threesome fics at the end of the year. In between were a lot of Cameron/Teal'cs, a lot of late season fics in general and a remarkable amount of gen and friendshippy stuff. Comes from writing for so many ficathons, I suppose, but I needed the structure of deadlines while trying to wrestle my real life writing into order.
Oh fandom, you are so therapeutic.
Thanks for all the reading and nominations and feedback and congratulations and what not over the year, guys. It's been a big year, and you've been a big part of it. But if you could answer this question for me, I'd really appreciate it: Why is it that I write mostly Cameron, Teal'c and Sam in the last year, but have more icons of Daniel? Why is that? I mean, I have some Sam, some Teal'c, only *one* Cameron, but I have just oodles of Daniel icons. It makes my brain hurt. I need chocolate.

Date: 2006-12-29 07:58 am (UTC)You know, I think you just pointed out what appeals to me about the pairing. Because, apparently, I like my fictional men dark and angsty.
These are all excellent points, and really just drive home how I need to go back and watch the seasons again. With a couple of exceptions, I've only seen each episode once, and I know that there's a lot more I would see the second time.
Um, let's get back to pretty images of pretty men
Mmm... pretty men. Do you remember which episode had Cameron and Daniel walking down the hall carrying a basketball? Because that was hot. ;)

Also, mmmmmm..... the Fourth Horseman, part I. (http://www.stargatecaps.com/sg1/s9/910/html/f%5Fh%5Fpt1017.html) Excellent choice.

Date: 2006-12-29 06:13 pm (UTC)my favorite Daniel and Cameron moment was when they were walking up the ramp firing at whatshisname at the same time
That was incredibly hot. I think that I might have even drooled a bit.
