December recs for your Tuesday
Dec. 19th, 2006 08:40 pmHelllooooo
I am remiss in mentioning two fics that I read a while ago.
One is a fairly brilliant reaction fic to the Out There AU (and yet compulsively readable) The General and Dr. Sheppard 'verse fic Coming Home by
xanthelj, a BDSM AU for Atlantis.
helenish took the premises of that 'verse and swapped them to create a situation that echoes gender inequality and homophobia in the military in really brilliant ways. There was, apparently, some wankery associated with the posting of this fic, but I hope there was no bad blood between the authors, because I find this kind of dialog brilliantly thinky. Take Clothes Off As Directed. Warnings: BDSM everywhere. I suspect you could read Helen's without going through Xanthe's multipart prequel understanding that in a society with sexual inequality, willing or otherwise, cultural inequality must perforce follow (intentional or otherwise.)
Have I mentioned how I appreciate that the wank is never brought here? I do appreciate very much. I dislike wankery.
The other is a multimedia bit of fabulousness called ZelenkaMatch.com, with Yenta-Zelenka in comic book form, with snapshots and sketches and flowcharts and funny. By
lillyjk and
newkidfan, slash, but worksafe. Shiny and feelgood.
In the new to me category:
isabeau's fantastic Daniel POV from Legacy. Really well done, and poor Daniel. First person, gen, nice friendship with Jack. Jericho.
New in general, and particularly germaine to a recent conversation with
synecdochic:
minervacat's sequel to There's a Girl Going Crazy About You called Valentine the Destroyer. This is Daniel with Cameron and Vala, where Vala is getting restless but Daniel may not be able to handle her leaving. I am currently loving the idea that perhaps Vala is the only person on the planet with more issues than Daniel, and for that reason, she might just be the one he falls for. So here's the question: if she has more issues than Daniel, can she stay? And could she leave if she really cared about him? This fic is lovely and nuanced and leaves great amounts of things unspoken. S10, no spoilers past The Quest part 1, multiple partners, possibly NC-17, really really fine.
Smuttly Unity:
For
raqs, drabbles from
janedavitt: Slow, Quick, Slow and
sidlj, Timeless. Jack/Daniel, not worksafe.
Also for
raqs, from the archives of extremely good Jack/Daniel:
destina's Aftermath, written Christmas last year, S3/4, new relationships, still surprising. I seriously love this one. Rerec.

Date: 2006-12-22 02:06 am (UTC)It was cold, but at least I got to drink all the beer. And found some of it at the local QFC. Which is very cool. I liked the porter a lot. Best porter I ever had. Thank you!
(Also, I'd really like to travel some and maybe meet you somewhat closer to the beer locations that you know of, this time. Also, there's fannish stuff we kinda skipped. Heh. Just sayin'. Let me know if you have the time and the will.)
