Could be this newfound lack of stress thing, but I don't feel the drive to post and tell you all about everything I've been reading the same way.
On the other hand, I feel a lot taller as I relax by increments, so there you go.
Brain laziness notwithstanding, I'm pretty sure I'll get going with a recs list here and find I've a lot more to rec than I thought. It always works that way.
OH! BUT FIRST-- A questions for the fannish hive mind: I've been playing with the sweet little G-rated Cam and Teal'c, Courting fic ever since
taselby first presented me with the prompt of 'ice cream' and have even brought it to the last few rounds of beta, but without satisfactory title. Found one that seemed to be working, for all it felt a little too 'bash you over the head with a sports metaphor', and then I promptly found a scientific term that I really like. But is a scientific term appropriate for a Cam and Teal'c fic? So here's the question for you, in poll format.
[Poll #818952]
We'll see if that works. I tried a poll before one time and something went horribly wrong.
ETA: You people are NO HELP AT ALL. These numbers are entirely too close. As a result, we (the royal we) have decided to go with Stadium Seating, (Cam and Teal'c, Courting as a summary line) and keep searching for the story that Penumbra is trying to tell. *sigh*
Right. On to the recs.
TEYLA is AWESOME.
And therefore
rageprufrock gives us two snapshots post McKay and Mrs. Miller: So Apparently Teyla's a Hot-blooded Woman, too and Teyla Deserves Love. Both are het for Teyla/Sgt. Yates and slash for John/Rodney in the background, both worksafe and adorable. And Cadman speaks for all Ronon fans, possibly.
Dunno if I've mentioned this one?
denynothing1 wrote it for
cofax7, and it's Teyla & Vala post-Pegasus Project, and marvelously alien and in character. All Greek To Me. Funny funny worksafe.
And... last but not least of the Teyla: Introductions, a five things that wasn't part of the recent meme that ate fandom, and is simply five ways Teyla and Cameron might have met, and it's a really nice look at how Cameron would react to being attracted to a warrior woman. By
purple_cube, worksafe, Teyla/Cameron flirting.
Meandering right along with the women protagonists, Sam/Vala from danvers, which is pretty darned wonderful, especially if you start rooting for the alien influence so they can go off and become space pirates. There should be more fic about that, actually. Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. Worksafe.
thassalia's very NC-17 Cam/Vala, more or less continuing from her other C/V stories, but I'd bet you could read it on it's own also. I can't believe she's sold me on them quite so solidly, but it works like a very workable thing. GUH. Control, post Counterstrike. NC-17.
And
xanthe, the woman who laces her BDSM stories with a liberal side of something addictive (=crack), has started writing the backstory for her AU D/s Sheppard and McKay (original story = The General and Doctor Sheppard). This is the 'verse where BDSM is mainline and these two strong personalities clash (apparently) quite a bit before they start trusting each other. As a mirror for trust, how one takes care of the other and what roles they might, arguably more reasonably, play in the canon universe in each other's lives, this 'verse is just fascinating. And story-wise, something about it is addictive. Posting incrementally, this is a completed fic with a new chapter posted daily. BDSM, NC-17, Sheppard/McKay AU 'verse. Coming Home (link to part 1, with subsequent parts linked at the end of the chapter. Two parts posted as of Monday.)
I have nothing deep to say about this except that it's such a pretty idea: The One Where John Gets a Tattoo. By
tesserae_, NC-17. And because I'm reccing it here, I shall point out that I thought the actual tattoo he got was surprising, unusual, and moving.
And now I sound like a food critic.
One other McKay and Mrs. Miller related fic, only this one is from Jeanie's point of view and she's a great narrator for a Rodney romance story. Bridges, by
mmmchelle, I'd give it a PG-13, maybe. Actually pretty worksafe.
Jack/Daniel portion of our reccing evening:
green_grrl's pre-slash or friendship War Is Hell. Everyone always assumed Jack would be a bear about getting injured, but this is Daniel dealing with him in a very matter of fact way in S4. S3? S4. When was the Devil You Know? That was the S3 cliffhanger double, right? This is a tag for that. Worksafe. Nice progression of attitudes with prolonged infirmary stay.
ana_grrl wrote a really nice crossover between Firefly and SGA called Out of Place (gen, Simon in Atlantis, worksafe) and then
blueraccoon followed it up with a sexy sequel called A Place To Be (NC-17, Simon/Ronon, not worksafe). I'm not sure what makes me ache more for Simon, that he is away from everything in the Firefly 'verse, or that being away is what lets him be happy.
Just to leave on something that is possibly too cute for words (like the YouTube videos of cute kittens that you know should be saccarin, but still you... cannot... resist... teh cute! Like that).
kellifer_fic's Five People Who Stole Little Bear. I defy you to resist. Rodney taking care of John transfigured (except for when he's been stolen, obviously.) Work safe.
Also, finally guilted negligent advisor into submitting the second article for publication. Bloody thing has gained two authors who are somewhat undeserving (but what the hell, it's a good paper and they want to ride on my coattails, whatever) and been delayed and stalled for the stupidest reasons ever, but it's been submitted. Good. Now to finish the third and I'll be a happy little doctor girl.

Date: 2006-09-12 07:52 am (UTC)I'm getting really good at destressing. The more I relax, though, the more disturbed I am by the difference. AND, I know full well that I'm not all the way there yet (I've got at least an inch to grow here...)

Date: 2006-09-12 10:45 am (UTC)Which is A Good Thing about being British - TV shows (usually!) go straight through, pausing for things like Christmas etc. Which is a round-about way of saying that S10 starts next month! Might have caught up with S9 by then... *cough!*
New Series DW (with the Doctor classified as 'Cute' by librarians everywhere!) starts on Skiffy on 9/29... With Torchwood to start on UK screens late October?
The Sam Ficathon stuff *should* start filtering through personal lj's and fic archives soon enough. Or plough through the posts, I hope they're not going anywhere...! *looks slightly panicked*
'Stadium Seating' is A Good Title - it's one I don't have to look up and go 'What the hecky does that mean?!'. I try not to be stupid but sometimes... Oy!;)
As for the not feeling very fannish... Can sympathise. In my case, there seem to be two reasons.
a) Sparkly new Fandom (Step forward - NCIS)
b) Am over a season behind in SG-1 and am wondering whether to even bother trying to catch up with Atlantis! Waiting for the DVDs to come from the Netflix Clone is... frustrating at best and (professional)ethics bite too damn hard. Especially when there are Professional Exams lurking. Grrr!
These things come and go - a rest can only help;)

Date: 2006-09-12 05:38 pm (UTC)I love you So Much. I am rubbish at this stuff. My only real landmarks are cast changes and major haircuts. And titles? Ptttthwbt. I'm terrible (especially when they all have 'snake' in the title and then get all cryptic in later seasons).
I think there must be many good things about being British, most importantly not having such a jokester asshat for a leader, breaking into every newscast to look earnest and confused last night, to tell us that he is always the man to lead us after whatever horrible mess he's led us into lately. But I'm moving to Vancouver soon, I hope.
I've been watching both SG-1 and Atlantis pretty faithfully this year to send the DVDs to a pal in dire financial straits (no high speed computer, no internet, Big Fan) and I totally gave S2 Atlantis the miss. Still waiting for Netflix too, and really, I should cancel them at some point, it's getting silly how little T.V. I've watched during the diss.
Anyway, my opinion is: SG-1 is hitting a new stride and I'm loving it. It was not a problem skipping entire seasons of Atlantis, and there were some gems in the mix this year, they seem to be settling in well (although Teyla is woefully underutelized.)
NCIS, you've met
I like your reasoning on Stadium Seating. I adore being able to geek out with titles, but this is a sweet little flirting bonding fic, and I don't know if it would support the geeked out title.

Me and my Richard Thompson quotage thing again ... I'm very pleased with the icon, but actually I did sod all to it; it was just a question of capping exactly the right moment.

Date: 2006-09-12 09:11 pm (UTC)Yes, exactly. Which requires but two things: that I finish the courting fic, and that I figure out exactly what story Penumbra is telling. I'm thinking either plotty, gen, whodunit with Sam POV (which is a shame because the only plotty gen thing I've ever thought up was SGA and Teyla POV, but I haven't the confidence to write Teyla... or SGA for that matter, so that's never gotten off the ground). Alternatively, it could be a meaty romancy smutty thing (perhaps paian-ish, if I'm being lofty and aiming high), but I'm thinking it would require Jack POV of all things, and I only really like pairing him with Daniel. I suppose it could be Sam/Rodney, though, that would be interesting.
Also? I think I'm going to do NaNoWriMo this year. Feels like a fun challenge and it'll help me organise which fun challenge I'm going to do when, I think. This means I could either continue the one I sorta started and outlined, or I could start from scratch on Nov 1 and adapt the SGA/Teyla story as original work.
And.. um, wow. That went long. Perhaps we could chat sometime, as I obviously have a backlog of stuff to tell you. Hee.

Date: 2006-09-12 05:43 pm (UTC)I do love that word. It makes me want to include diagrams along with the title, though (I r not that kind of physicist, after all). If I don't use it here, I will find a way to use it somewhere else....
So, which title would fit a nice little story with Cam playing bar keep and introducing Teal'c to the tradition of root beer floats and by the way discussing sorta deep things?

My first thought was, "Vanilla." Not in the perjorative sense at all, but in the sense that it's the best for root beer floats. Plus, it sounds like a sweet story. *g*
Or there's always, "The Ice Cream Man Cometh."
Or, "Bean Me Up, Bar Keep."
'kay. Leaving now.
