Back in the saddle again
Aug. 20th, 2006 09:01 pmThe idea of tracking down the links for everything I've read and not yet rec'd sounds just supremely daunting. Y'all know I'm a link finder for the newsletter
sg1_debrief, and what kind of week I've had, so I hope you'll forgive the lack of f/b or coherent rec and realize that if your fic made it to the newsletter then I likely saw it and read it and gave an exhausted grin and promptly completely forgot what it was about.
Because, well.
Unless it was something written by
synecdochic and/or
taselby, in which case, I read it over and over again until under normal circumstances I would have the word order memorized (in current circumstances I have a vague idea of the plot and could tell you what the story was about).
HOWEVER, the Stargate Fan Awards are open for voting, I've been nominated more than I deserve, the button for nom'd fics matches my decor really well, and I've found some really good fic amongst the noms. Granted, a lot of these are by authors I already adore, but I'm still thrilled that the awards are introducing me to works of theirs that I overlooked before (or was so stressed I forgot I read it).
I give you a rec for (this has nothing to do with soliciting votes for fics nominated against mine, obviously. Vote for what you like):
jennghis kahn's (
surrealphantast's) Ghost in the Machine. One helluva ride through a mission gone wrong for the original team in which they are all skilled, unique, respecting each other and working together so seamlessly that it is hard to imagine how they could have done it if all four hadn't been there. Those of you with OTPs can then take them home and imagine whomever falling into bed together and any of them would work because the relationships are all so solidly drawn. Really good yarn. Gen, long.
I also want to rec a little fic called Complicated, by
raqs (Dith), which is an unusual one, and so I sympathize with any issues she may have had placing it in a category. This is Jack in deep deep denial, to my read. This is Daniel and Jack, with potential. A potential that Daniel recognises, and even though Jack is not phased by bodies, by trauma, by reactions or needs or trust or safety or any of that, he knows where the lines drawn by society are, and he knows that he can't cross them. It's kind of heart breaking, how deep it runs. It feels so true, how you need the other person's response to feel sure of your own advances. I want them to have everything, but I find it achingly sweet how gentle what they do have is. Her Jack is smart and adaptable and devoted and wonderful. Daniel is hurt and strong and independent and openminded and curious. I rec this so hard. Rated R.
Beyond which, the aforementioned
synecdochic,
taselby and also
paian entertained me with extraordinary fic past and present recently and whether they knew it or not, made the last few weeks easier. Thank you.
RW knows I love her more than my luggage but I will thank her too, for being a distraction and for talking to me (well, IMing me) when I had nothing of value to contribute and for sending me snippets of things at just the right time.
And for everyone (including former lurkers, because that's just awesome to find good wishes from friends you never knew you had) who commented with congratulations on the announcement post, thank you. The number of comments alone is overwhelming, but I think I've responded to everyone. You made me smile. I have nothing but love for the world.
