Day of rest, day of gobsmacked
Aug. 18th, 2006 01:08 pmI woke up bizarrely obsessed with running to my car and driving to the coast. Seriously, the words 'I want to go to the BEEEEAAAAACCCCCHHHHHH!' were about the only thought I could manage for the first half hour I lazed about in bed. The second half hour I was awake I spent scientifically trying to establish the mostest comfiest position for a girl with lots of knots in her neck.
It's been a really good day so far.
My inbox is filled with congratulations and snippets of ficlets, and I've been so bad about f/b lately and so, so grateful for how you all have made me smile the last few weeks or howeverlongit'sbeen, that I thought I would post (repost?) a comment ficlet I wrote really fast for Rydra the other day.
Only this time, I'm spellchecking it. Because I love you. It's the least I can do. Or I could put together a recs post, I suppose... naw, this is what I got:
Title: Proposition, or the Teal'c & Vala Ficlet for RW
Rated: PG (Vala is not a G rated girl)
Word count: something like 600
Tag for whatever the episode we watched last week was. With the poker scene? Yeah, after that sometime.
Vala tapped the pads of her fingers on the worn surface of the table, one after the other, inaudible on the solid wood. The last sounds of Cameron and Sam fleeing the scene to blush in relative isolation were fading. Not that you could go far, or have much privacy in a smallish cabin, which had been exactly Vala’s point a moment ago.
“Why is it that the people of this planet are so anti-sex?” She asked Teal’c suddenly, pulling her head up off where it rested on her arm. Her voice sounded too loud in the previously crowded space. She didn’t get an answer from him, but she really didn’t expect one unless she asked him a direct question; so she asked him a direct question. “You aren’t anti-sex, are you? Wait, you probably are. Restraint as virtue or something.”
She’d answered herself and planted her chin petulantly in the palm of her hand, now tracing the lines of the wood with a fingernail. Still, he alone hadn't fled the scene, though she doubted Teal'c ever fled anything.
“Restraint and self-control is much valued among the Jaffa, but when living among the Tau’ri I endeavor to respect their customs.” Vala squinted at him.
“Even if antiquated and prudish?” She swore that was a quirk of a smile when he nodded. “Restraint is not that admirable a quality if all you are doing is denying yourself something you need. I don’t care if you couch it in terms of respecting an alien civilization’s ways.”
Teal’c definitely smiled a bit at that, and then quite deliberately closed his eyes, leaned his head back and relined his chair as if to say ‘your concerns are not my concerns unless I choose for them to be.’
Vala huffed, and dropped her hand flat against the table with a smack. “Did you ever think that the self-control might be a carryover from the days of the Goa’uld? That maybe you value something imposed on you and it’s not quite the reclaimed tradition you think it is?”
“I consider such things frequently,” Teal’c said after a pause, voice coming disembodied from over the top of the recliner, “do you?”
Her spine melted and she slumped in her hard backed chair. “I—“ she began, and could not find the bluster to continue. She started over. “Do you think less of me if I ask for something I know brings joy and comfort? Well, if in sufficient quantities, and quality, neither of which I’m getting at the moment…”
“I would not think less of you.” Teal’c interrupted the bluster just as she was getting the rhythm going. “I would, in fact, be honored.”
Vala had to switch gears rather suddenly to realize what had been offered while she was still resenting the interruption, but Teal’c waited out the moment patiently from his place in the surprisingly mobile chair.
“If that was a proposition, you could have said when we were back on base and I was bored to tears most nights, but at least with my own bedroom. As it is, the pathetic mattress I’m sleeping on here could not have possibly been designed for an adult, much less two, exhibitionism clearly won't go over well and there is absolutely no privacy, anyway.”
“As was your original observation.” Teal’c noted serenely.
“At the time I thought there was a potential upside,” Vala replaced her chin in her hand and morosely considered the 52 numbered deck of cards. If she could figure out a way to make them work for the game she learned on Medronum, she could at least play something that involved taking off one’s clothes, and maybe it would entertain her for a while.

Date: 2006-08-18 09:50 pm (UTC)My brain r wierd. Can't explain it. Glad you liked the voices. Poor Vala was just getting stonewalled.
I gotta go make sangria for the party tomorrow, want one? Might help with the insomnia.

Date: 2006-08-19 09:38 am (UTC)A quiet Jaffa who has, IIRC, gotten laid in canon more than any of the other leads *g*. I can see Teal'c having fewer issues with either sex or celibacy than any of the others (and that includes Vala, because sex is such a weapon/tool for her).

Date: 2006-08-18 11:29 pm (UTC)Oh Vala, Vala. I can absolutely imagine her saying this, and I can imagine the expression on her face as she does. Great ficlet! And congratulations again! Now is the time to take some time for yourself!
