One week from today, I'll be defending my thesis. Yowza.
That just doesn't bear too much thinking about, and frankly, I need to cut back on the caffeine consumption too, but I've got my coping mechanisms, between sports and music and falling asleep routine and distractions, and of these, distractions are best to discuss.
Yesterday, distraction came in the form of the adorable
frostfire_17.
You want to get her talking about one of the following things:
1. licorice tea. I totally didn't believe her either, but it was fantastic.
2. ancient languages and their modern derivatives. See also: written vs. spoken, reading upside down, accents, vowels and noun declensions. Scribbled hieroglyphs on napkins are just the icing on the cake.
3. December.
Seriously, people passionate about stuff the way I can be, but on totally different subjects? Fills me with glee. Marvelous afternoon. Also? I learned more than I ever knew about Latin, and sometimes I miss college and the encouragement to take random classes outside your major.
[complete tangent: I remain convinced that you people are going to look like whatever image your handle brings to mind. Someone with a handle like frostfire I really expect to look like Chiana or someone otherwise blue or grey colored with spiky, gravity-defying hair. Wasn't there a bad guy on Batman who was some kind of evil ice person? Anyway, let's just say it's really nice, if a little AUish, to find Frost really doesn't look anything like Chiana, and Raqs has much better taste in clothing than the fur bikini thing Raquel Welch tried to work in the caveman movie and Katie M... well, frankly, I was fairly convinced that Katie, having my name and an icon that fuzzily resembles a photo or two that I have of myself, would totally be my clone. It's probably a good thing that I don't actually have a clone, as I'd likely have to be the evil one, and that'd be so much pressure.]
Today I am entertained by a series of recs made by storydivagirl from the Multiverse 2006 crossover ficathon. Authors names are currently withheld, but these recs have so far been nothing short of extraordinary. Though I haven't seen much SG-1 or Atlantis, so I may have to trawl myself eventually looking for those. Today, though, every time I have a spastic moment of OMG I DON'T HAVE THE RIGHT PROGRAM TO MAKE THIS SLIDE DOOOOOOOOM!!!!! I go read one of these Farscape/Firefly/Hitchhiker's Guide/Dr. Who/Atlantis crossovers and I feel nothing but love.
Then I go figure out how to make the slide. *sigh*
ETA: Well, this is disturbing, in a 'I need to work like HELL for one more week!' way: my wrists hurt. My left more than my right, which is probably related to my non-ergonomic desk situation. Symptoms are worrisome. Am resolutely ignoring the section of brain screaming 'CARPAL TUNNEL!' and instead giving myself permission to switch desks tomorrow, and also slack off even more about leaving feedback on stories. Kaythxbye.

Date: 2006-08-11 01:27 am (UTC)...and, ha! I *told* you the tea was good. Nobody ever believes it until they try it.
And, yay! So glad you enjoyed my language-babble. I love fandom; it's so cool to meet someone for the first time and be able to talk to them for four hours straight. *happy*

Date: 2006-08-11 10:21 am (UTC)Ummm...in the distraction corner...I wrote a PWP epilogue thingie for All in the Making. It's called Making Out (http://dustandroses.livejournal.com/184887.html), and I'm much more comfortable with how it came out than the last one. I think I got my mojo back. Oh, yeah...and there are a couple of fun recs at the end...
Good luck. I'll be thinking about you.

Date: 2006-08-11 06:03 pm (UTC)Yay for mojo, that is great great news. You certainly scored with this lovely smut. And wasn't carron's pic fic bondage piece fanTAStic?
I love your smut day posts. I'm so sorry I haven't been commenting.
And with the wrists... I'm hoping they get no worse if I ice them and take anti-inflammatories, and I'm hoping the continued typing doesn't aggravate them too much, but I'm relying on the rest time post-defense to heal them up. It's amazing to me how my body is starting to buckle under the stress, and I can only be glad it's almost over over OVER.
