Teal'c fic: drafted and coming in at >4000 words. in betaland, she's a much better judge than I am.
Brain: running at 20%, MAYBE. I swear the on-again, off-again headache has made it impossible for me to read at a reasonable rate. Could be pre-migraine, but that'd be unusual. I think a tension headache is more likely. It feels like wet laundry in here.
Icons: run, do not walk, to [livejournal.com profile] or_mabinogi's journal for gorgeous high art black and white nude icons. Really lovely, see example on this post.
Dr. Who: still haven't watched it as the parents have commandeered the T.V. to watch West Wing.
NCIS: there's an Abby-centric ep this week. I'm so there.
Stuff Accomplished Today: besides writing for fannish stuff? Nada. Brain has taken a mental health day. *pokes brain*

I shall, however, point you to recent works of impressive fannish natures:

[livejournal.com profile] janedavitt wrote a smidge of a moment between Sheppard and Jack in the helicopter at the beginning of Rising, possible passing of a torch we never saw with Mitchell, and a nice beginning to all sorts of possiblities for two men of similar priorities in the service. Seven Minutes Out, John & Jack, PG-13-ish, gen.

[livejournal.com profile] ana_grrl successfully managed Firefly Mal/Simon! Hot concept, fill in the steamy blanks with your own favorite interpretation. Yum. A Very Smutty Mal/Simon Ficlet.

brain shut down mid-read but [livejournal.com profile] mmmchelle posted smut for a Sunday and my brain shorted out at least twice from the sexiness levels. What It Gives. NC-17, SGA, John/Rodney

(seriously, it's too hard to explain stuff, and my fingers feel foggy typing.)

minnow1212 wrote an amazing, creative, unusual piece about urban legends in the Pegasus galaxy. I can't sell it, but everyone should read it. Look for the line 'Don't you already know how it ends?" Twelve Things They Will (Someday) Say in the Pegasus Galaxy

I think Pru just posted a new part of a WIP I was reading, but I can't remember if I was reading Sky Full Of or not. Wait, no-- that's the mummy fic, right? I was totally reading that. I was looking forward to more... I'm going to wait until my brain is working.

Someone is reccing Sam/Jack at stargateficrec and I'm tempted to read the stuff that looks like messed-up and/or restrained 'ship. Does this make me a bad slasher? Does it make me a worse slasher than I was already since I willingly and knowingly write het in the Stargate 'verse? I swing both ways, people, and it's time I came out about that.

Wait... [livejournal.com profile] taselby wrote something (cupcakes! not flocked! Cam & Teal'c! PG!),

Did I tell you about nandamai's funny funny Sam/Daniel & Jack OT3 with Teal'c suffering? Teal'c suffers, man. ADEA? I did, I told you about that... I think. Um, adult for sex in the rain.

and [livejournal.com profile] kernezelda wrote something S1 Farscape (spoilers for the Nerve)

And I'll update as I can manage because I've used up my working brain for the moment. If I managed to embed all the links I'll make you a watch.

ETA: funny and logical all at the same time: Offer Extends to the Pegasus Galaxy by kabukivice, SGA, John/Rodney and PG-13-ish.

Well, I think it's awesome that you're a slasher and you also like het. Of course, despite the fact that I have my own preferences as anyone does, I consider myself a multi-shipper. Hence, I'm probably mistrusted by those on both sides. ;)

I think there needs to be a cool, new name for those who like both though.

Personally I tend to care more about whether a fic is about a particular pairing that interests me (and whether it's well-written) than whether that pairing happens to be het, m/m, f/f or whatever.

I get that some people have strong reading preferences, but I'm not sure I get the point of dividing fics and ficcers up into these never-the-twain-shall-meet camps.

Mostly me starting up a conversation using deliberately inflammatory language with a twist of humor.

I suppose it's like the Kinsey scale, though, some people are only for the het at a 1, some are only for the slash (and a particular flavor of slash, like femme or male/male) at a flat 5, and a lot of us are on the sliding scale inbetween. *muses* And then if you go 2D there are all kinds of variations with gen and multiples and different combinations and how vanilla and how kinky and... *shrugs* We're not likely to describe it with simple geometry, I expect.

yup, briefly thought of a sphere, but then how can you pick a pole? For which pairing? Where does GEN get to go?

I seriously doubt anyone on my flist would assume I was being too serious, but you never know. I do know some of them have very knee jerk reactions to stuffs, so I thought I'd be all *expansive gesture* above board with my questioning curiosity.

I'm not an absolutist about much, but I do understand that different personalities can be... though I'm with you on the boggling. I boggle from time to time about the wierdest stuff in fanfiction. Takes all kinds, I guess.

Not at all mistrusted, I think you had a distinct 'reconsidering' effect on me. I've always had opinions about how Jack and Sam, even given chemistry and attraction, wouldn't, within character, risk so many reprocussions for the other, (and squeely little fangrrls being offended and shocked by the mere questioning of canon love maaaaay have put me off the discussion,) but now I've found some authors I really enjoy and trust, I'm thinking it might be time to revisit the possibility of a less than absolute stand on the matter. It's probably not fair that I'll give so much leeway to Sam/Daniel but absolutely none to Sam/Jack unless they have someone else in the mix to translate for them.

Plus I think it's an interesting discussion to have with my flist. I know there are very strong opinions about it, and I'd rather chat it out.

Ack! Yes! I can't *tell* you how frustrated I was after coming into fandom, even 4 months later. I went the Yahoo list route because that had always worked for me before, and just... gah! The S/J lists kicked me if I mentioned that I loved Daniel, the S/D lists kicked me if I mentioned I loved S/J, the slash lists kicked me if I mentioned Sam at all. The entire attitude was 'us vs. them'. I really do believe that that sort of thing can have a real effect on your acceptance/liking/feeling of a ship.

LJ was my salvation in that *most* (we ALL know exceptions, natch) of the fans, whether slash or het, are very tolerant and don't really care if you want to read/write the other. They just want to meta and dig into the psychology and there's plenty of writers/readers of each to go around, and the general feeling is more like, "Ehh, whatever, we all agree Jack's hot, right?"

And if the slashers on my flist don't read every little thing I write, that's fine; just like they know I probably won't read every little thing they write. It's a wonderful thing.

Do you know what's really wierd? It's all about fanon Jack, for me: canon Jack was crazy inconsistant and the flippancy got to be too much after a while. I love him in fandom, though, he is so dayum sexy in the hands of a talented writer.

I have some problems with Sam too, inconsistant character wise, and I'm okay with discussions of that, and I feel like Sam can be interpreted to be a really wonderful capable character, and I love reading that, but I do find it odd when folk do not distinguish between bashing the character and bashing the way the character was written. I feel like even if you don't like her involved with your pairing of choice you can still find a way to write her well without turning her into a teenage girl who thinks everything is for her without basis in reality.

Slashers seem to be warning for Sam bashing now, which I appreciate, though it's often done in a tone that implies it's a sort of joke warning. I take it seriously, though. *g*

You should see the reaction when I announce flippantly that I like Sam a lot and occasionally write her with Teal'c or Daniel. There's this big hush while everyone looks around to see who'll start the mobbing, then someone goes 'cool. Weird, but whatever' and sometimes we get an interesting discussion about Sam out of it. Which is why I'm still on those lists, even if I mostly lurk. *g*

Dr. Who: still haven't watched it as the parents have commandeered the T.V. to watch West Wing.

If it was 'Dalek', do anything and everything you can to see it. That episode just rocks like the Alps. If it was 'The Long Game' - not so good but necessary to understand where the finale is coming from. TWoP ussally calls it right but on these two, the lovely Jacob is a bit confuzzled!

Musings on being a 'bad' slasher. Never that m'dear. Though one must question why you are looking at J/S. What happened to the rule that J/S only really works well when you add D to the mix too?!

Het is good - het is responsible (in a very roundabout kinda way) for us being here in the first place. Even so, in fic, the characters must have that little thing called 'chemistry'. John/Aryen have it by the bucketload, so do Rommie/Gabriel (Andromeda), as does Mulder/Scully (so I'm watching S2 X-Files and lusting after Skinner - pbbbt!), Doctor/Rose... and so on. Jack/Sam (oy did I just type that!?!) do not have it. If they did, it might make the whole ship thing more bearable. Again, did I just type that?!

Yes, you did pimp Nadamai's wonderful OT3(ish) before, I'm sure. Even so, it is a work of great beauty and humour.

On the subject of pimping - took your musings about taking on a new Doctor and have posted on this subject. If I get any replies, I will inform you:D

'Twas The Long Game, and there were some great Doctor and Rose moments that made it all worthwhile. I am enjoying that series, it's so sweet.

I am breaking my own rule with the J/S, but I've realized that I'm being absolute in my not-reading-of-at-all. Because what if it's an interesting story that explores chemistry? And possibly acknowledges that J/S is not what they've built it up to be? Or what if it goes badly or is messed up? We'll accept that in a J/D fic provided Jack comes to his senses and starts boinking another member of his team, but never if they simply break up. What if it's a warrior thing? We'll build a relationship with much more unusual pairings for the novelty of it or to see what we learn about a character in that situation. What if there's a situationt that takes job and hierarchy out of the equation--- all of these questions are what fanfic is for, right?

So if you have an author you trust from a different pairing fic, why not follow them into a J/S situation just to see? That's where I am with it. I've found that fucked up 'ship, just like not happily ever after slash, is only labelled with the pairing, and sometimes there is a balanced and interesting psychological reason for those two people to be in that situation at that moment.

Will I love that ship? Probably not ever. Will I write that ship? I doubt it, as it doesn't speak to my muse. Can I be openminded about it? Maaaaaaybe. I'm tempted.

I have to admit, I'm a little wary about people who claim to only read one type of fic or ship to the extent that they start spouting off phrases like "ew, het!" or "ew, slash!"
In an ironic and joking way, I understand, but I gather there are some people who are completely serious about it, and I don't understand where that comes from. So far I've managed to surround myself with fans who enjoy it all, for which I am very thankful. I don't imagine fandom would be fun for me at all if I were constantly hearing of characters and ships I liked being bashed at every turn.

What's weird is that sometimes the most fanatical OTPers can create even more of the environment by driving others away and creating the us or them situation. It's odd. I'm very much for the new fanfic, new potential school of pairings or more.

Farscape fans were well trained in the free love ideas, though, even the John/Aeryn shippers seem really open to love of all flavors, although the 'scapers I've met here are all from LJ and maybe I'm biasing myself to a pre-selected for group, but there you are. Sometimes you gotta have opinions.

In Stargate, though, tptb made the mistake of half-committing to a 'ship that they did not follow through on, leading to a group who felt entitled, and several groups who suddenly felt like outsiders, it wasn't pretty. On the boards and on some lists you can still find slightly more militant battle ax wielders, but often I find now that 'ew, het' or 'ew, slash' reactions tend to be just a wish to avoid the battles, and not deal with the melodrama. I'm more pleased than I can say to be more or less in a safe little space here where everyone seems to have a 'write and let write' ideology. Variety, oh yeah.

Ooo, interesting that I should come across this little discussion
*de-lurks*

I am a fan of Sam first and foremost, but I'm not into Sam/Jack at all. I'm also not keen on Jack/Daniel or any boyslash for that matter. And I'm not really into Sam/Daniel either (though I'll read ship fic for them). So that kinda leaves me with gen fic (which I love), Femslash (which I enjoy), or alternate ship pairings and thats about it.
Basically the short end of the stick when it comes to fic. You know how hard it is to find decent, if any, gen Sam focused fic? :( :(

So I have to search high and low through S/J 'omg twu wuv' squee and J/D 'omg Sam is the worstest evar' to find any hidden gems. Lucky for me there is some quite sane S/J and D/J fans around Livejournal, who don't fall into those extremes and write/rec some fic to my taste. I often stop by your journal to check out your recs and while I'll skim past the boyslash recs, I do know you rec some very good fic that is to my taste :)

What's the point to my rambling? Well just expressing my appreciation for someone who is not all about the OTP love and is quite willing to explore other pairings to give folk like me some hope for this fandom :D

Hellooooo! I'm glad to hear you find good stuff on my LJ, and it's really nice to hear what people are looking for too, helps boost my committment to telling you the pairings and ratings on stuff.

How do you feel about Sam & Teal'c, btw? I'm only asking because I'm about to post a story, but it had a wierd genesis: being entirely S6-7 friendshippy, but then I remixed it from Sam's POV and it got much sexier, though still gen, interestingly...

Meh, me and my writing. Anyway, I'm glad you're here and that you find great fic here. I have the gen list going on over to the side, but maybe it's time to start a Sam list, just Sam, not restricted to pairing? It means I get to cross reference more, but really, Sam is my favorite too, always has been (no matter what I say, it was Sam that got me into the fandom.)

I recently asked for a fic based on this icon from one of my favorite Sam writers, so we'll see how that goes.
