fanfic for a late night
Apr. 13th, 2006 10:51 pmPeople don't post late around here. I mention this because I am, in fact, on the leftern US Coasts and apparently, much of my flist is East of me. Possibly across the pond, even. How come none of my Aussie or Kiwi flisters (are there any Kiwis?) post at night? Hrm? A little p0rn would not go amiss, is all I'm saying.
I'm not getting much done on my
tealc_ficathon piece, although we're a thousandish words in. Trouble is, I think it's going to take a while to say what I want to say, and therefore? I procrastinate.
Faaaaaaannnnnnfiiiiiiiccccccccc. It's the new brains.
princessofg has me jonesing for first time stories (she has another here called A Date, But No Flowers if you just can't get enough Jack and Daniel first time smut. Yum)
Then I had to move into SGA, because they are just hitting their stride with the smut, they are.

helenish's Your Inevitable Unhappy Ending, which I can't believe I haven't recc'd before (but if I really haven't, I was remiss, this is excellent) because John Not Saying what he means is possibly the most heartbreaking thing ever, but Rodney is a genius, so it's fantastic when he figures out what's going on. NC-17 (spoiler: it's a great ending.)
Also read the very spiffy Like a Long, Slow Nervous Breakdown by
cesperanza, which is an amazing compatible f*ckbuddies under stress turning into partners who can't be without each other, and as a result is an amazingly unexpected first time fic. John/Rodney, NC-17

Date: 2006-04-14 10:40 am (UTC)Thanks so much for suggesting "A Date, But No Flowers." What a sweet little first time fic. First Times are my favorite fic of all. They always make me happy. I'm pretty sure that's why I write very few "established relationship" fic, myself. I hadn't really noticed it, but I had someone bring it up to me, and looking back, she was right. I almost always write first times.

Date: 2006-04-14 04:43 pm (UTC)Eep. The ficathon. I don't know how many words, but I'm on page 12 and I'm nowhere near having much of anything done. I wrote about ten of the pages in the last three days when I realized I don't have to write this one in order. "Yay, I can skip to this part I see clearly and maybe that'll help me figure out what I want to do earlier."
Maybe that'll help you. Write the parts compelling you now, and maybe it'll inspire the rest...at least that's what I'm hoping happens with me(I do have an outline).
How the heck can people print WIP? I can't stand being limited by writing things consecutively.

Date: 2006-04-14 05:14 pm (UTC)I love first times too. I was glancing through the Jack/Daniel ficathon signups and it would appear that we aren't the only ones. Lots of requests for first time fic there.

Date: 2006-04-14 05:17 pm (UTC)I *always* writing in order, first word to last. Almost always know everything that's going to happen and more or less how, it's just a question of describing what I see in my head writing it down, pulling forward the things I think are interesting and ignoring the rest.
But I can't post WIPs, because the editing back and forth with my beta is almost my favorite part, that's when the fic goes from 'what the hell did I just write?' to 'hey, this actually isn't bad', in my mind.
Later tonight, later tonight. I'm making a date with Teal'c. *pencils it in*

Date: 2006-04-14 05:53 pm (UTC)Right, but don't you see some scenes "clearer than others?
My main experiences with betaing (both as writer and beta) have been with completed stories. I've done some discussions with how should a fic go both in the abstract and by reading a WIP. Is that not how it's done? I've recently read comments by people talking about sending things to beta daily or weekly as they go.

Date: 2006-04-14 06:00 pm (UTC)I don't tend to write big long plotty things, it's much more psychological stuff, so maybe one or two scenes, a few beats that need to happen, ideas of what their thought processes would be, how they would move and act and react.
I'm missing a scene about two down from where I am now in the Teal'c fic, and I'm shady on the ending as a result. Apparently I can't do anything until I figure that part out. It's like the Farside comic where the scientists are doing a proof on the blackboard and a goes to b goes to 'and then a miracle happens' goes to z. Goes against my basic programming as a scientist. *g*

What a coincidence. I have that kind of a to b to q thing in my teal'c fic too (though the ending is clear...if I end it there, or end it later, heh). That's what was stopping me, I wasn't sure how that part would work, then threw up my hands and wrote the part I knew. It's giving me ideas for the missing part. :-)
Then again, I'm an English major/business minor person. Scientific leaps of logic don't bug me as much. ;-)

Date: 2006-04-19 08:12 pm (UTC)I've been mulling the advantages/disadvantages of writing styles of writing in order versus writing out of order since we started discussing it here.
If you don't mind, I'd like to bring it up as a topic of discussion over at
