minxy: Teal'c raises a hand to say "hey". (Default)
[personal profile] minxy
Alright, besides my lovely feisty!Janet S1 gen story (you know you love it when I boost my own stuff--it's linked in the DVD commentary post below or from my fanfic listing on the right hand side of my layout,) I have three other recs that in one way or another also reference everyone's favorite early season doctor, at least once.

Early season team gen recs:

A Circle of One's Own by Jonah in the Whale, all about Colonel O'Neill's insecurity about standardized testing, but it's really worth it for Teal'c's perplexity and Daniel's objections to them at all. Plus it's just witty and in character. Team, earlier season, gen, but Jack and Daniel's friendship is prominent.

[livejournal.com profile] surrealphantast wrote a great team-night poker game in which Sam is spectacularly bad at bluffing titled Jello Shots (gen, team, G, very witty) that [livejournal.com profile] katiedammit has prequeled with a Sam and Janet UST-ish (it's almost gen. Very nearly. Still G rated, work safe! Fun for the whole family!) ficlet about what had happened to the rest of the Jello Shots: Never Bluff a Sucker. Which features Sam still being unable to lie, which is so entertaining, and Janet labeling herself 'jailbait', which, frankly, sounds a lot like something I would say.

SGA: from [livejournal.com profile] stargateanon, which is a comm to post anonymously for a few weeks and then reveal the author later (sort of a 'spot the writing style' game) a Lorne centric piece that nevertheless features John and Rodney, Caldwell and Elizabeth, in ever-shifting roles: A Major's Guide to Dining in the Pegasus Galaxy. Gen (unless you count Lorne's apparent obsession with ketchup), G rated.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] liek_omg_ drew this SGA cartoon in which John's hair takes on a life of it's own and it entertains me mightily: Snarktastic. PG and funny.

Farscape: because she told me I could, I read [livejournal.com profile] thassalia's remix piece Tit for Tat, which is Chi centric and Season 1, post A Human Reaction, maybe? Anyway, Chi new to Moya, Aeryn dubious and suspicious, John still homesick and yet all about Aeryn, Zhaan wise as ever... the group is all on their game, in the wacky messed up world of Farscape interpersonal relations, and it's incredible to see Chiana making her way, learning from them in her way and their way and deciding to stay. Great feeling of the story that the series didn't have time to tell, but if they had? It would have sounded a lot like that. Especially D'Argo's chaos line. Gen, PG for Aeryn being characteristically violent.

I watched a bit of Farscape last night, Home on the Remains. Was too late and I was too tired to do the blowbyblow reaction post, but my overall thoughts were that you could see the bad guy's betrayal coming from a mile away, but it was a very interesting Chiana character piece. She's good with the seducing, even when she doesn't mean to be, and it's very sweet how into her D'Argo is (her 'whoa' at the end was a great moment.) I noticed Gigi's full body Chiana language more in this one than I have in most of the episodes so far, but I'm not sure if they started shooting her differently or what. The episode besides which I was *meh* about. The wacky Zhaan sporulates thing was creative, though. Gotta love a show that at least follows up on their wacky premises. Premisi? Anyway. Dream a Little Dream is next and I'm getting a vibe off the DVD. Feel like this could be a good one.

Also, I like that Farscape pushes the limits of television and tries to engage other senses like smell. I can't remember the last time a T.V. show tried so hard to sell me on the smell of something, or even bothered to mention it. Love those guys. Sensory appeal, man!

DALD...Meh. Not one of my faves.

Got the sig O to watch the last half of season 4 last night (starting with Unrealized Realities). We watched "There But For the Grace of God" on SG1 Monday's "shipper eps" *heave* and I mentioned DK wrote it. Then I was explaining other UR/AU eps in SG1 and Farscape and he wanted to see if there was any similarities.

Needless to say, there weren't. He was impressed at how the Farscape writers just assume you are smart enough to catch on or that you will go back and figure it out (the purpose of the rewind button, he said). His favorite thing was how IMPERFECT each of the characters were and how there was never a Deus Ex Machina (sp?) or someone (*cough*LMNT*cough*) to come and fix it all at the end of the ep.

I was impressed that he caught on to all that.

Just remember that Sam is a genius and in all other ways perfect, and as such, will realize that in every instance when an alternate version of herself hooked up with Jack, regs or no regs, the WORLD ENDED. It's hard to argue with those kinds of numbers, and if there is one thing that has stayed mostly consistant about Sam, it's that she does occasionally do science. It's rarely the kind of science she was apparently trained to do, but it's about numbers nonetheless.

Thank you for no spoilers btw, when I read 'we watched S4 Farscape' I started reading between my fingers, but it was okay. *G*

Hey, what happened to the leather clad bum .gif icon you had? Is it sharable? Can I borrow it if I return it only slightly more used?

All of Sam's boyfriends die anyway, so it doesn't matter. Yes, all of those characters are SOO PERFECT even Daniel in his way is Perfect. It is very annoying.

Home on the Remains is not my favorite ep either. Dream A Little Dream has its moments, but it is not one of Season 2's all time greats. I want to slap Zhaan up side the head through most of the ep. John sings and that makes it okay. Yes, you must hurry and reach Out Of Their Minds!!! Chiana and D'Argo richness as well as all the other characters.

I love Zhaan when she's all mystical and zen and wise, whenever she goes red-eyes it feels like a personal afront somehow.

*is strongly of the opinion that the 'not exactly' line from last season refers to Sam realizing she's a black widow and trying to save the human race the only way she knows how*

LOL! GREAT ICON!

INDEED! And when you watch OOTM you will soooooo see where I got one of my SG-15 fic plots!

Plagarism at its BEST!

No, no. It was an HOMAGE. Yeah, that's it. (Hey! Layoff, it works for the boyz at bridge...)

It is too big for LJ.

THE ICON, not the ass LOL. I have been meaning to re-tool it to make it fit...I just have to reinstall ImageReady first.

Now, to find that disc.

(And I was very careful about how I worded that stuff because I didn't want to spoil you)

Yeah! Glad you liked it! I was awfully happy to be able to offer up something that was non-spoily!!

Dream a Little Dream is all very well and good, but if you don't watch Out of Our Minds soon, I will simply explode:) Hee.

Oh noes! Asploding Thea! Can't have that. *reorders Netscape queue*

Hmm, so why did I think Dream was going to be so good then? Maybe I saw some meta about it on my flist or something. Okay, it's Out of Their Minds, then? *tries very hard not to speculate*

The meta of the episode is really interesting. But there's just not enough Aeryn in it for me:)

You know, I don't mind flashbacks at all, normally, but this one really slowed down the pacing of the show and it just felt like it had no momentum.

High!Chiana was funny. Zhaan was inexplicably almost OOC the whole time (I get confinement being a panicky thing, but she didn't panic during the Ep where John pretended to be a PK, she was calm. And I don't understand the hallucinations, there were no worries about that? No repercussions? No reasons? I guess I could buy it being a more extreme situation: farther from her spiritual center, no safety in the imprisonment, foreign place, being set up, without the people she trusts around her, but it seemed like it wasn't extreme versions of Zhaan's normal behavior, it was random behavior, and almost every reaction in the book, which got a bit too confusing.) Rygel was wonderful, though. With the drunkenness, and the stepping up to be her lawyer. And the backlit D'Argo/Aeryn/John arriving moment was beautiful.

But yes. Maybe I'll go find some meta to read about it to explain some stuff.

OOTM is in the mail, winging it's little way to my little house. *claps excitedly*

The ep is worth it to me for the Chi/Rygel moments, and for the really fabulous visual of John, Aeryn and D'Argo walking down the corridor, ready for anything. But it's not one I watch often (as opposed to Home on the Remains, which is truthfully not very good, but has moments that fill me with such glee! Aeryn being pissy about getting left behind, John frying the dentics (a running gag in our household is the "you can eat anything if it's fried argument), Chiana's past and shady but specific morality. I can let go of a lot of the truly terrible parts:)

[livejournal.com profile] danceswithwords did some nice meta commentary on the ep (she's discussed everything up to OOTM). I'm not entirely sure that the reviews are entirely unspoilery, but they're pretty safe!

There are some duds in Season 2 (Home on the Remains, for instance *g*) but there are also superfantastic OMG GREAT episodes, so. Agree with Thea about Out of Their Minds. Hee.

Dream a Little Dream has some great Chiana and Rygel interaction, almost buddy-cop style. But other than that...*shrug*

There were interesting moments in Home on the Remains. There was also a lot of time that I can't seem to account for so apparently nothing all that exciting happened.

No asploding. Am reorganizing priorities as we speak. Hee!

Thank you so much for passing along your rec. I'm very glad you got a chuckle out of it. :)

(Here's where I admit that the "jailbait" line came from recently rewatching Teryl's dancing performance with Tom Jones... somehow, that was the most apropos descriptor.)

From: [identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_minxy_/
I think there are two kinds of people re: age, those who care a lot and those who care not so much. I am firmly of the opinion that claiming whatever age you feel is perfectly appropriate, and that the actual number pretty irrelevant. Then again, I've also been told that I look like I'm 12 sometimes, but I'm pretty sure that's behavior. *eg* I like Janet stating that she's jailbait. It's marvelous.

Also? Now I want to see her dance with Tom Jones. Was it years ago? Like, really years and years?

I'm excessively proud of it, but I shall keep my fangirlish squealing to a minimum for the sake of decorum. :-D

Oh my goodness. There is something really marvelous about Teryl cavorting around in a leotard with fringe, playing a comical oversized striped guitar (or whatever it was) in 3 inch high heels, but giving Tom a look that says 'you want to kiss my WHAT, mister?'

Heh. Gracious.

I'm glad it amused!

They showed it in Chicago last year after Teryl's bit on stage... you could hear her absolutely howling with laugher backstage, and I got a kiss out of it afterward. (I'm so glad she's such a good sport.)

Heh. From your keyboard to the flotsam on Katie's hard drive. :-D

Download me (http://www.rocketfic.com/clips/terylsg.zip) (2MB). It's a (very) brief bit of a convention appearance she did in UK a couple years ago.

(I wasn't kidding about the "howling" with laughter part.)

LOL! No wonder you could hear her! Also, you supply me with the very best stuff, with only the smallest side order of confusion when you talk about yourself in the third person (because it makes sense for my harddrive too, see?)

I shall now flash my realname icon at you. *flash*

"A Circle of One's Own" has always been a fav of mine. I used to rec it quite a bit... back when I ever recced anything. It just makes me giggle... but I also like what it has to say.

I like reccing older stories from time to time. Sometimes I find out I've missed out on some of the most fantastic stuff written before I was in Fandom or on LJ or something. Circle is great team.

I should have gone to bed but wasn't quite ready. Decided to follow a rec of yours. Haven't done that in a while. Just finished "A Circle of One's Own". That was marvelous. I've actually been thinking about IQ tests again recently. Daniel's perception of them match my own, but I am still curious about taking an official test. As opposed to these internet versions.

My attitude rather closely matches Sam's. I've never taken a proper one either, I'd be interested, though I don't know what it would change. I did sorta get a kick out of the GREs. The MCATs, they were evil, on account of actually needing to remember information, but the GREs were all logical thinking and puzzles, which entertains me.

Glad you liked it, I thought every character was very well drawn, and I loved that Daniel came up with a solution for Jack.

I don't think I've mentioned it lately, but I love your recs. Not just these, but generally. Sometimes you'll even influence me to go places I normally don't *cough*slash*cough*.

Jell-O Shots really was cute.

So thanks for friending me and inviting me to friend you back. :-)

Only sometimes? Sometimes with the slash? Awwww, must work on more enthusiastic sales pitch. *g* I'm glad, actually. I think, entering fandom, that you always start with a particular position on pairings and relationships within and based on your read of canon, but once here, broadening what you'll read to witness some extraordinary storytelling is something I can totally get behind.

So thank you for the compliment. *g* I really love hearing appreciation for the recs, actually. It makes me happy to hear that people found good stuff this way.
