I could waffle on about the last year and what it meant to me personally, about the time Before You Met Me and how I was falling apart and that this year was the year that I not only stopped Falling Apart but actually Got It Together and Am Pleased. I could talk about the role of fanfic and fandom and LJ in my life and how you have become a creative outlet that I needed and one that is more useful than writing poetry Just For Me or painting Just For Me because even when the Shit Went Down this year, as it has every year for the past several, I had you. You beautiful constant people who I don't feel like I'm putting out when I tell you what's up and I don't feel are judging me and finding me wanting.

I could talk about that, but I'd probably get into more personal stuff than I'm comfortable with in this public domain and it's distinctly possible that I'd make you blush.

So, let's talk about my parent's reactions to the pilot of Atlantis:

Dad: Hey! Rewind that. You see that woman? [he's referring to Weir] She just signed that tablet someone handed to her without even reading it. That's poor people management.

Me: Dad. She's IN CHARGE. She has to sign stuff, it's what people in charge do.

Dad: You know what she did? She just marked that guy 'present'. She's taking attendance.

Me: Well, this is important in an isolated high security military base in Antarctica. Wouldn't want just anyone walking around.

Mom: Hey, I like him. He has good hair. [You have one guess who she was talking about].

Dad: Un huh. Did she mark his attendance? I didn't think so.

Also heard during viewing of the Fantastic Four:

Me (indignant): WTF? So she's supposed to be a high faluting head of a science department and she has nothing better to do than escort people around and play secretary?

Dad: Kate. She's good looking. Actually, I think she's my favorite character.

Me: Whatever. If I were a highly educated scientist with a free spirited little brother who had a Problem With Authority, I would never let him drive.

Dad: OMG! This movie is about you and your brother!

Me: Would you care to rescind the comment about the Scientist/Secretary/Escort chick being a well rounded character?

Thoughts on King Kong: Getting the whole family and then some to go and see this movie in the new snazzy theater in town was clearly the highlight of Dad's holiday.

Thoughts on Brokeback Mountain: Seeing this with my Mom was the most brilliant use of time on New Years Eve ever. Also? There were things that the movie did better than the story, like the vistas, the isolation, the rich vs. poor, Ennis's connection with his daughter. There were things that the story did better; like the ending. I missed Ennis' thoughts on Jack at the end. And Heath did a marvelous job with a tacturn character and carrying the POV of the audience and being sympathetic, but Jake stole the movie for me. He also aged more effortlessly.

Beyond SG-1, Alias and Firefly, which I loved Before You Knew Me, I've been introduced or convinced to watch Farscape, Rome and Atlantis this year, though my schedule has been so packed I've made slow progress in them. I believe you, though. I believe that I will love these universes truly, madly and deeply. Thanks for the heads up, and I'm happy to have met all of you this year.

Very happy to have met you, too! ::hugs:: And Farscape is something I'm going to get into as soon as I can.

If you like madness, angst, bodily fluids, humor, and leather pants, I think you'll like Farscape.

Now see? How can I resist that kind of tagline?

Now, do I watch Farscape or Rome tonight? Oh, the choices!

Now... not that it's going to stop me watching this or anything (STOP! I'm convinced! I'm convinced!) but who comes up with Muppets + vomit = Rilly Gud Idea?

Seriously. They had a wierd combination of things going on in that show.

As long as you go in knowing that it's totally on crack, you'll do just fine. ;)

You know how Atlantis is The Fandom of Heavy Crack Usage? (I just assume everyone knows this by now. I mean, really.) Well, Farscape fanwriters didn't have to use a lot of crack because they got it all on the show.

And that's why I love it so. *g*

I do and I'm sure I will, but the DVDs are so darn expensive I'm going to have to stick to watching it on TV -- and they don't show it half as much as Stargate :;wry grin:: I'll get there eventually.

Plus... made here... heh. :)

No worries. :) One site - www.ezydvd.com.au was having a box set sale last time I checked.

I got battlestar, two seasons of farscape and peacekeeper wars, the jurassic park set, garden state and the first season of the muppets for around $250 australian.

The new Starburst DVD editions are much cheaper, from what I've heard, and you can also Netflix it.

Why? Because they put more than two out of order episodes/disk?

Dunno why - they're more recent, and actually have more extras.

I don't have Netflix... wonder if the local vid store has it; they do rent TV box sets by the week, divided up.

I'll investigate; thanks!
