Yuletide and Stargate recs
Dec. 27th, 2005 03:45 pmI've just been watching
yuletide. I'm newish to LJ (less than a year) so I didn't really know what it was and I am just blown away by the breadth of fandoms out there. It's introduced me to whole new universes of fanfic, not that I'm likely to stop being mostly mono-fannish anytime soon.
I don't know how to describe it, but I have never really known other people to be fannish about literature, so I am delighted, thrilled and oddly hysterical to rec a fic from the Dark Is Rising series of books: The End of the Summer by
ashkitty. It's a gen moment between Will and Bran at the end of the life Bran chose. And it is just gorgeous in a memories surfacing, old friends returning way.
Winnie the Pooh 'verse by
loligo: In Which A New Child Comes To The Forest (who would be Christopher Robin's son), and Christopher Robin learns something very sweet.
In Fairy Tales, meaning mostly Sleeping Beauty, but others are woven in there too, is written a complex, multilayered tale of the true nature of the Witch by
lisan. Wicked, this is not, this witch is bitter and twisted, and she may not have twisted her past, but she has spelled her own future, and beautiful is the love that watches her do it.
Brought to Light by
ranalore in the Ladyhawke fandom, is something that I read on
katie_m's recommendation without knowing the fandom at all, and it is psychologically complex and lovingly resolved.
In the Tortall 'verse, which is detailed in several series by Tamora Pierce, is a curiously sad friendship fic called Old Bones and Memories by Rachael Sabotini (=
wickedwords). It's not a character I've read yet in Tortall, but now I really want to.
Also, a pretty story of how the great heroes inspire the little ones: Of Valor by
temaris, also Tortall 'verse.
So for the rest, there are a number of Brokeback Mountain fics that I shan't read until I get my lazy ass to the movie theater, and there are quite a few Narnia fics which I'm also not reading, for the same reason. Loved loved loved the written work for those, though.
And... transitioning into television fandoms: Dead Like Me was an extraordinary drama and Mandy Patinkin, playing Rube, was never less than remarkable in a multidimentional, faceted, utterly unique role. It is like seeing an old picture you'd forgotten about to read a fic so him. And Never Lose Affection.
Also Dead Like Me (I do miss that show) a moment when Reggie (George's little sister), Daisy and Roxy cross paths, and let them stay crossed for an interlude. Bedtime Story (with Strawberries and Cream).
Right, so some Stargate:
paian wrote Walls and Mirrors, which is Jack/Daniel and posted like, 5 seconds ago, so I haven't read it yet, but I still loved it. Even better than Cats. More thorough rec to come.
ETA: okay, here it is. I loved this because it worships the beginning, the first revelation that might have brought Jack and Daniel past friendship and into something more. I loved their individual responses to it, and love how they never push each other past bearing. S4.
Then, an author I DID NOT KNOW, but have now read Everything I Could Find. Icarus, darling, sign me up for your fanclub, you write really gorgeous moments and find such interesting things to say in them. Two favorites: Shy Guy, which introduced me to her (thanks to a rec from
padawan_ally. *hugs*, though, you don't know me and will probably be a little scared by that) and does a brilliant job of letting two tacturn guys be hawt together. And Between the Lines for the aforementioned interesting moment amid slash.
Also?
thegrrrl2002 writes very, very hot John/Rodney slash, this should not be news, really, but here's a specific rec: This one is a first time, with interesting twists about who knew they were gay and who didn't, and how that doesn't actually match up with how okay each of them are with it. Simple fic, with the hawt sexy, and the competant people still able to do their jobs, and well executed. And, I liked the angst in a big way. We All Arrive By Different Streets. Atlantis, John/Rodney, adult.

Date: 2005-12-31 12:05 am (UTC)I started out in the Lord of the Rings fandom, and I so love Tolkien's place names. I actually made "Ancalion" up, but it could be a Tolkien name, now couldn't it?

Also, saw (cause I friended your fanfic journal) that you're a Pacific Northwesterner? *gives seekrit Pacific NW handshake*

Yeah, I was a fan of the original Star Trek (never rabid, but loved it), The Twilight Zone, Star Trek: The Next Generation, then Stargate SG-1. In books I read Tolkien, oh, I lost track somewhere around the 35th time I read them. I also read 1950's sci-fi, a lot of Andre Norton, and all the fantasy I could get my paws on.
I was in the middle of the original influx of D&D, but could never get into the violence of the game. Loved the 20-sided die, though.
My online fandom path (visualizes footprints on wet pavement) went from Tolkien, where I largely wrote essays and argued, argued, argued, to reading hobbit-slash, to writing hobbit-slash, to reading a favorite hobbit slash writer's Harry Potter slash, to reading Harry Potter, to writing a staggering amount of Harry Potter fanfic and being popular for a time, to reading Stargate SG-1 fanfic solely to tame back my need to write HP. Then, of course, I started writing SG-1. I didn't mean to, I just couldn't help it.

Date: 2006-01-02 03:13 am (UTC)How 'bout that rain, eh? You having flooding problems? We have lakes where there were no lakes before, let me tell you. Naturally, all the drivers are panicking and driving extremely poorly because they've never seen RAIN before, oh nooooo.
I was non-fandom fan of The Next Generation, and now I love Alias and Stargate and Harry Potter and Tolkien. Only really fannish about Stargate, though. I have some thoughts on why, but I think it boils down to things I feel Stargate ought to be saying but isn't; the others I didn't feel were remiss on any particular points. *thinky*
I'm probably forgetting some. Would you be shocked if I said I never read hobbit slash or HP fanfic? I'm getting into Rome and Atlantis and Farscape and Lost, and I can see loving fanfic for those, though interestingly they'll be the first to having the fandom prompt canon viewing.
