Happy Thanksgiving
Nov. 26th, 2005 11:54 pmNational note: lovely Thanksgiving. Great holidays always involve food. I'm particularly fond of those that also make you think about happy things while you're being gluttonous.
Homely note: when did the Pacific Northwest put in for blue sky in the wintertime? Cuz, liek whoa, that messes with a girl's head.
Neighborly note: dear assholes who keep uncontrolled untrained dogs outside, with no fence, while you're gone all day on Thanksgiving weekend: that dog bit me on the leg and it bled lots. The deputy who came over to take the report looked a bit pale and for some reason did not share my fascination with the wound, but that doesn't mean he won't do his job and try to make you see you are doing that dog no favors by letting it attact unthreatening RUNNERS on the other side of a PUBLIC ROAD. *flips neighbors the bird*. It's your damn fault that the dog catcher is going to take your animal into quarantine to make sure it doesn't have rabies, idiot. Plus, my Dad knows a guy who knows the woman you rent from. It's a small town and they like my Dad. You are toast.
Familial note: I had a great day eating too much with you people despite not getting to run more than 2 miles due to mean untrained dog attacking my left calf. You rock. I love you guys. I even went shopping with you the next day and it was fun *boggle*, and now I have made brilliant headway on Christmas shopping. INCLUDING ideas for presents for the BF (new official designation), which came from my Dad, who generally speaking is very suspicious of boys in my general area. *is impressed with Dad for being so large minded*.
Also, special note to Dad: Thanks for setting up the wireless internet, Dad. Now I can get online without worrying about leaving a history of p0rn sites for my Grandmother to find! *hysterical laughter at the thought*
Meta note: I've had a very up and down few weeks, not helped by Thanksgiving which was both. A really cool discussion is going on at
kormantic's journal about wonderful and true romantic moments. I love people who get me thinking about beauty and life and it's particularly fitting to be grateful for those things on Thanksgiving.
Fanfic notes (probably why you all read this journal anyway *g*):
janedavitt finished Leaving Time! (Woo hoo! Go girl! Links are *points* back there, somewhere, in the WIP post. Maybe 2 posts back? Not far. You can walk. Just avoid mean dogs... and a more coherent review coming soon.) ETA: so now it's really late and I'm still awake because of this fic and it's really deft how she's woven threads of communication and resistance and miscommunication and love and anger and pain and blending into a piece that starts in one place and ends in a completely different setting. Don't be scared of this fic because of its darkness. It is haunting, and it starts creepy, but more than that it's thought provoking and even the sex has meaning in all of it. Incredible.
and then promptly presents us with some very much thank you PWP spanking fic. LOL. What a gal. I love that woman. Sticky Sweet.
agentotter = Otter, wrote May You Last Forever, a gen or pre-slash fic that is ow and beautiful and ow and holy crap and character! and Daniel is so hurt, so many many times over hurt, and ow. It is such beautiful lyricism.
Also,
ana_grrl, formerly of mostly Firefly slash work, takes us to Cameron/Teal'c. Pre-slash, if we need to clarify, but if anyone can't see the sort of electric intimidation with Teal'c I'll make you a watch. It must be written, my people! Teal'c needs looooooooove. Anyway, it's just a short little ficlet, but seriously, there is so much going ON between those guys. She nailed Cameron, too, though unfortunately, not literally. Just a Guy, Saying Hi.
Of course, if my LJ were emailing me my comments I would have known that
rydra_wong sent a heads up on this, but luckily, I have ana on my flist. *is happy*

Date: 2005-11-27 10:33 am (UTC)But you know, there is something to having that happen, turning around, running home, holding it together and then having a safe place to melt up. It's a safe place to lose it, with family. With my family, I started hyperventilating when I saw my Dad as I walked up the path, and he asked what was wrong, if I was okay, hugged me and then yelled at me that being bitten by a dog was not fine. My mom, formerly of insurance work, had us go and take photographs of the dog and note the house. We came back, they called the cops and animal control and talked to them while I disinfected my leg awkwardly over a sink, and took a shower and dressed my wounds (after taking more photos of it bleeding all over the place. Then my brother came later for supper, tracked me down in the house and asked why the hell I was smiling at him when I'd been attacked earlier.
It was 'cause I felt protected, really.
The rest of it, it's out of my hands. The dog will go into quarantine and they won't do any prophelactic medications, only treating what they'll need to.
For my money, the real danger is the owners. And, I'm still a dog person. Which is good.
*accepts cyberkiss to owie* All better!

A safe place to lose it is a damn good thing to have.

Date: 2005-11-27 02:28 pm (UTC)And thank you so much for the fic rec; much appreciated, as are your links to other fics; I've found some great ones through your posts and I loved the Cameron/Teal'c.

Date: 2005-11-27 09:04 pm (UTC)Cameron/Teal'c is marvelous. I may even have a story for them. Can't wait to learn more about Mitchell though, to get a better handle on his voice and character.

Date: 2005-11-27 09:02 pm (UTC)You know, I bet I could run now if I wanted to, but I'm in heels so I think I'll pass and just go dancing later. Don't expect to have any problems, though.
I'm glad you like the fic recs and lists. I started doing them mostly for myself, to have the links, then as a way to encourage writers I enjoy, and now to know others follow the thinks and encourage the writers too is marvelous. I can code for links in my sleep now, so to know it helps link readers and stories makes it worth it.
Doing my part to enable fanfic addictions, yes I am. Plus, I've been recc'd occasionally and it is such a different animal from feedback that it's nice to be able to make people happy by saying nice things.

Date: 2005-11-27 08:36 pm (UTC)Just hoping that you're okay - by the sounds of it you are (for which the 'verse shall be thanked) I've heard mumblings that the day after Thanksgiving is the busiest shopping day in the calendar!
'Spose it's one way to burn off all that food;)
Will second the Ana reccie - it's a damn fine story. And will do my own reccies post again soon... but not tonight - too much caffine and The Prodigy Live on DVD are not conductive to sitting still and working on such a labour intesive post!
Take care of yourself - no more big doggies alright?!

Date: 2005-11-27 08:56 pm (UTC)And the bite scared me, and I've used up half a box of sterile gauze and medical tape, but aside from that and standard bruising tenderness, it's healing the way wounds will. Didn't keep me from running home, doesn't hinder my movements, doesn't hurt when I walk, just when I touch it.
But my goodness it is bruising most spectacularly. One for the record books.
I'm all better, I swear! delph kissed it better.
Really, the day of shopping was more traumatic. But I got lots done.

Date: 2005-11-27 09:32 pm (UTC)And, you are most welcome for the rec. There are ongoing lists that I have linked to on the right hand side of my page, but the short hand for Mitchell slash, and a few isolated het recs, are here. (http://www.livejournal.com/users/_minxy_/12172.html) So you can see your name there now and see if the others working with that pairing are doing cool stuff.
I'm really pleased with Teal'c/Cameron like nooooobodies business. My favorite Stargate was when the Daniel and Jack friendship was strongest and most central. The possibility of a reappearence of friendships within SG-1, and the added coolness of involving the chronically underutelized Teal'c makes me dance with joy. Oh! The slash possibilities when there is a strong friendship on screen! *glee*

Date: 2005-11-28 12:10 am (UTC)Thank you for pointing me to the Mitchell fic list. Looks like there are some fun things out there, I'm looking forward to checking them out when I have some time. New fandom! Fun.
For some reason I can't highlight your text to quote you, but yes to the friendship thing. I just watched the Space Channel's 1/2 hour special on the new Stargate season, and some of the things they hinted at/the clips really made me happy and even more excited for this season. Oh yay!
