That was rude. Seriously. To run out of gas on the way to work, which I was going to out of a misguided sense of DUTY rather than going to the funeral of a patient who's death touched me deeply. Right. So then I'm 2 hours late for said JOB, only to find that nobody really noticed I was missing. I'm not too bitter, though, considering I really could have filled up last night but felt lousy after going to the funeral home, and normally I would have another 20-30 miles before I was even close to running out... but I guess that gridlock traffic last Friday took it's toll on my gas mileage for that tank.

The reason I'm not defying the stars at the moment? The woman who stopped, with her beat up truck and stories of her mobile home and how they are squatting in a local park and her somewhat incomplete set of teeth? She wore a purple velvet dress under an old work shirt quilted to be a jacket, and she not only drove me the mile or so to the gas station, she lent me her gas cans and then drove me back to my car, all the while regaling me with tales of what has broken lately on her truck (the passenger seat belt buckle being one thing... we looped my belt through hers to avoid a ticket), and how she saw me on her way going the other directions and figured she might as well change her plans, turn her truck around, help me out and get gas herself.

You could tell me that my friend being buried today came back in velvet to help me out and I would believe you, because he had that kind of sense of humor.

So in conclusion, dear Fates, you are forgiven by reason of purple velvet.

Why do you love Jacob from SG?

I love Emmett from QAF because he's not afraid to be himself. He's there as he is and you have to love him for that. And he's also a fiercely loyal friend. Like when something happens with Ted that you haven't seen yet and he needs Brian's help. (It's great, you'll love it). So, that's why I love Emmett.

I love Jacob because he wore a wedding ring in the hospital, even though his wife had been gone for nearly 20 years and he was estranged from his family. He had this shell about him that has quietly dissipated after he joined the Tok'ra to allow who the man really is to come through: someone who trusts his daughter and his friends enough to believe unbelievable things and take amazing risks, who loves even when there isn't any hope, who becomes a diplomat and speaks for relationships, friendships and connections after having lived so long without, and who, ultimately, choses not to isolate himself again, not to survive his second partner. And knowing what a sense of humor he had, how he loved his kids, to see him so committed to Selmak that he wouldn't leave her, and to know that Selmak respected him enough to let him make that call, and let him be himself all those years... that is why I love Jacob.

Plus, as delph will tell you, he wears hats well.

And, Emmett is wonderful. I'd be surprised if there is another scene that can compete with dueling dildos for my affections.

Tell me about...Badger from Firefly!

And I'll take an easy way out and do Wash. *sniff*

The greatest thing about Wash, of course, is his sense of humor. Right from his first scene in the pilot, he hooks you with his plastic dinosaurs. He’s hilarious, but it’s not over the top or unbelievable in any way and that’s what first drew me to the character. My favorite Wash line would have to be “Some people juggle geese.” And then there’s his relationship with Zoe, which is fucking perfect in that messed-up way. Two people who love each other deeply and aren’t always hearts and flowers. Their conversation in Heart of Gold about having kids is so fucking great. DAMMIT WHY, JOSS, WHY?!

You know, Badger wears a tie, but not a shirt with a collar. He threatens to turn Mal in or take his ship almost every time they meet, and yet they continue to do business.

He's done time in prison, and he exaggerates how much. River looks into his head and draws an accurate picture of him, and he likes her for it.

Yeah, he's ambitious, but a little confused about respectability. Flexible morals and loyalty, but you can rely on him to be that consistantly.

And, he wears a bowler hat. That is why I love Badger.

Oh, what a character she was, black teeth and all. And here I am in my heels and my dress slacks, walking along a fairly rural road on a windy day... she was a God-send. I hope I stop for people if they need help... I can't remember ever deliberately ignoring someone, and generally there is something dangerous about stopping by yourself when you are a girl... but, yeah. My crazy guardian angels had to have been amused by my antics today (someone once read my palm and informed me that I have two guardian angels. Have always loved that idea).

I'm in a peculiar phase of my schooling: at one point I got involved in a clinical trial and while most of the data has come in, there are still a few stragglers that we're treating even though the study closed. Anyway, now my main job is analyzing and writing up the findings, and as such, I spend a lot of time at my desk...

It is underwhelming to realize no one is really noticing when you are there or not, unless you were consistently not there, I suppose.

Then again, it is usually when I'm down that the kindnesses of other people really impress and touch me. I'm not very good at asking for help, so when it comes I'm flabbergasted, and unlooked for? The purple velvet woman turned around for me... and then scolded the several cars she'd seen pass me without offering to help. She has a strong sense of community, I think. I have some fears about accepting rides from strangers, though, so her easy manner and way of putting me at ease was nice. Also that I was only a few miles from a gas station... I'm not sure I can keep making this commute from the country into the city, though, to be honest.

People. They are sumthin', though. And the most extraordinary things happen to me on ordinary days. *boggle*

there are certain benefits to being able to be quiet in one's office. not that i get a lot of that in my job, but there are moments when i can just focus on what i'm doing and people forget to come visit. still, it's nice to have visitors.

Yeah. I've been at the 40 minute commute (sans traffic) for *checks watch* a month? I predict that I'll have moved by February. Though, I'll also have graduated by February, so I may well be moving to a new city. I'll keep you posted.

I think I love the purple velvet woman too. I also love that she asked absolutely nothing from me, not my name, not thanks, not anything. I gave her one of the gas tanks back full, though. I only needed enough to get 2 miles to the gas station to top it off, but I'm seekritly rather pleased that her only name to me is the purple velvet woman.

It's a good name.

You know I don't really have a 'type' type, but the Boy is kind of amazing. His face when he smiles really lights up a room and he is always ready to be happy.

I'm even fairly sure that's not just my presence. I think he's just a happy soul.

As for my angels... wouldn't surprise me in the least. Somehow, all you need sometimes is just a little push to recover from an unhappy time. A light shines brightest in the darkness and all that. But they do need to work on their dental care in the Guardian Angel circle. I'm just saying. Or cut back on the sugary sweets, maybe.

Tell me about... Janet Fraiser from Stargate SG-1;)

Hammond – (would have gone for Jacob but you so very succinctly summed up just what made Jacob such a lovely character… but you missed out that he wouldn’t get kicked outta bed for eatin’ crackers… Just sayin’!)

George is a great reader of character. He could see that as disparate as SG-1 was, they worked at their best as a team. He’s a family man, who despite being widowed found a new family in the SGC. Dotes on his grandkids and certain members of SG-1 I’ll wager (clue – he wears glasses;))

He led the SGC with honour, conviction, heart and very large shiny shoes;) He might not have understood everything that was going on, but he trusted his people enough to get the job done. He also makes friends for life – witness his friendship with Jacob. Willing to go against all the rules to give his good friend another chance at life… and love, perhaps;)
If Daniel is the soul, Teal’c the heart, Jack the courage and Sam the brain of the SGC… then George is the anchor.
Not bad for someone who started there waiting out his last months before retirement!

I love Janet really a lot. I love her because she admits when she's stumped, and grew as an adaptable physician during her time at the SGC. Because she was smart, she was fiesty, she brooked no argument when it was her call and took command when it was appropriate. She had men twice her size obeying without question. She also had deep and meaningful relationships, with some risk to them and some drama, but never overstepping the line and becoming melodrama. The woman was competant and respectful and respected and likable and loyal and independent. She made hard choices based on logic and she made important choices from the heart. Janet was also the kind of character where you never had to wonder if she disappeared when she wasn't serving the story--she, even as a secondary character, had backstory, had a reason to go home at night, had something to fight for and a balanced life (insofar as doctors ever do), and this added so much to simple phrases like 'she never left my side for three days--didn't even sleep'.

I. Loved. Janet. I really miss her too. The two women they have now aren't drawing me as much, and at one point, Sam really did. Lately, though, Sam is only relevant in relation to other people, not in her own right, and Lam's story arc with the general I am finding tedious and painful.

Ever the optimist, though, I continue to hope that the two women who remain might become the kind of wonderful, competant, interesting characters that Janet was.

Was that 100 words? Is there an upper limit on these things?
