Sam's List of Fanfic
May. 24th, 2006 12:33 pmBecause my beta and I are both writing Sam at the moment, I have been reading Sam at the moment.
[Reccer's note: I'm ridiculously behind updating these lists. If you're up for a little sleuthing, you'll find new recs under this tag and all tossed together.]
It occurs to me that I don't have a recs list for Sam that isn't pairing specific.
I have shame.
I do like the het, though, so I have here the beginnings of a Sam list where she can be all sex-positive and sometimes single and always a strong character with interesting psychology and slim to no emotional intelligence, poor girl (doesn't mean she can't learn, though.)
I have been reading
dirty_diana, and oddly skipping over the slash (I KNOW! It's so weird of me,) and going straight for the Sam stories.
Sam/Daniel: I like the feeling that they know each other so well that the rules just go out the window when they're together; that to the world they can be tactful and responsible and the go-to person for whatever, but together, it's about want and need and trust. And sometimes, together means in danger of being discovered, which is an interesting line to walk with the uberresponsible Sam and Daniel, makes it feel like they might be about to crack, if it weren't for each other. These are NC-17: Strawberry Ice Cream (love Jack in this too), Fraternization (established relationship).
And a Cameron/Sam that I liked and believed. Those two wouldn't come together under the traditional UST passion, so I liked that Cam recognizes her drive and potential and appearance and just really really thinks she's cool, and Sam is won over by the fact that Cam is consistent, even if she doesn't get so much of what's going on between them. When I said that I thought Sam didn't have emotional intelligence? This is what I mean, but it still works between them because Cameron has it in spades. Laterals, PG-13.
Previously rec'd on Minx's LJ (some of the recs lists need updating):
Other Sam/Daniel in their very own list (updated 5/24/06).
OT3 and OT4 with Sam can be gleaned from this list of yummy (updated 5/24/06). Sam/John/Rodney remains my favorite, although I love team love fics too.
( Gen and team: )
( Het (besides Sam and Daniel, listed above): )
Sam and Jack. Yes, like *that*. I am a multi-shipper, hear me roar:
Of the Sam/Jack recs, which were all really worth reading and there is a link collection in the post's comments which I shan't repeat here, a couple have stood out so far:
Karen T's Fairytales was a lovely introduction to the ideas of possibilities being all well and good, and the loss of them painful, but in the end, it's the working side by side that they're living for. PG.
surrealphantast's good people trying to do the right thing; there's honor, there's good intentions, there's fairness, there's attraction... and there's a broken stargate to take them to the edge. Interesting Pete, respectful gentle separation from him. Bird Stealing Bread, R, Sam/Pete and Jack.
For the adult end of the spectrum, loved this one: Unspoken, by
elly427, NC-17, spoilers through S7. For continuing attraction and affection and annoying inability to communicate in words, though it seems less important if they're allowed to show what they mean. Great tension.
Also by Elly, a tag for Death Knell that got me thinking: Rationale, NC-17. Because, it's an exploration of slightly fuckedupedness + compromised mental state (exhaustion) + attraction leading to illogical conclusions. Now, this probably wasn't what was intended, but I love the idea that these two ridiculously messed up people (it's a messed up ship, it is) might have been sleeping together for years. YEARS, and telling each other and themselves that sex is different from emotion and separate from team issues or personal life and they might have actually believed it. Just the notion that they could both be able to get that messed up and wrung out that a conclusion like that would make sense. It's a fuckbuddies idea, only not. Somehow, that would make the years of pining so much more acceptible to me, if they were doing something, even if it was just making this more messed up.
Another nice messed up tag for Death Knell: No Quenchless Autumn Breezes by lyssie, which is Sam needing something not delicate and going to Jack; it goes right along with my deeply held believe that Pete was way too vanilla, and that was the problem for Sam ultimately.
Loved the Jack POV in this, because it really is about him and his whole life, of which Sam is a new adventure, but not the only one. Also loved the impression that for Jack, it was doing that mattered, not emotion, not any notion of forever or soulmates, just that they had made it there. Chronology, PG, by A.j. Wonky formatting that appears to be an artifact of posting as a .txt file.
Conversing With Cliffs by randomleaves/JoJo. Really liked this a lot. For Sam having friends of the female, military, smart & funny variety, for someone else opening their eyes to the possibility of having it all, and for, in the end, being competent people saving each other's arses first, with the revelations to be considered at some future time.

Meta on Sam, writing her, and various canonical things:
A hilarious celebration of the unhealthiness that is Sam/Jack: Nos's It's Like a Trainwreck!
Also a nuts and bolts discussion at
sg_workshop (community members only) on writing Sam.
My own huge meta post on Sam is here, my Sam fanfic is listed (along with all the rest of it) here.
