Because my beta and I are both writing Sam at the moment, I have been reading Sam at the moment.

[Reccer's note: I'm ridiculously behind updating these lists. If you're up for a little sleuthing, you'll find new recs under this tag and all tossed together.]

It occurs to me that I don't have a recs list for Sam that isn't pairing specific.

I have shame.

I do like the het, though, so I have here the beginnings of a Sam list where she can be all sex-positive and sometimes single and always a strong character with interesting psychology and slim to no emotional intelligence, poor girl (doesn't mean she can't learn, though.)

I have been reading [livejournal.com profile] dirty_diana, and oddly skipping over the slash (I KNOW! It's so weird of me,) and going straight for the Sam stories.

Sam/Daniel: I like the feeling that they know each other so well that the rules just go out the window when they're together; that to the world they can be tactful and responsible and the go-to person for whatever, but together, it's about want and need and trust. And sometimes, together means in danger of being discovered, which is an interesting line to walk with the uberresponsible Sam and Daniel, makes it feel like they might be about to crack, if it weren't for each other. These are NC-17: Strawberry Ice Cream (love Jack in this too), Fraternization (established relationship).

And a Cameron/Sam that I liked and believed. Those two wouldn't come together under the traditional UST passion, so I liked that Cam recognizes her drive and potential and appearance and just really really thinks she's cool, and Sam is won over by the fact that Cam is consistent, even if she doesn't get so much of what's going on between them. When I said that I thought Sam didn't have emotional intelligence? This is what I mean, but it still works between them because Cameron has it in spades. Laterals, PG-13.

Previously rec'd on Minx's LJ (some of the recs lists need updating):

Other Sam/Daniel in their very own list (updated 5/24/06).

OT3 and OT4 with Sam can be gleaned from this list of yummy (updated 5/24/06). Sam/John/Rodney remains my favorite, although I love team love fics too.

Gen:

[livejournal.com profile] lasultrix's Untitled Post-Lost City Fic is some of the best Sam angst I've read, where she identifies some of her issues but can't sort them out and goes in circles trying to find someone who can help. The relationship with Pete is Everything She's Supposed to Want and Jack is the elephant in the room that keeps Sam and Daniel from really leaning on each other, Teal'c is wonderfully present, Janet is heartbreakingly absent. Loved this. PG.

[livejournal.com profile] nandamai pointed me to another Solo Sam fic. Both she and Jenn (who found the links) added caveats to their recs for characterization, and it's true that there are some character choices that I wouldn't have chosen for Sam, but they're all illustrative and the writing is really very well done. Session. Points for letting the characters be flawed, even when they're fantasy characters. From HC-56 via the wayback machine, and Jenn and Nanda (wot? Sometimes it takes a village.) Not work-safe.

[livejournal.com profile] rydra_wong posted the Sha're & Sam (and Janet, actually) fic (Scotoma). I beta'd this, so obviously I am biased, but there are few fics ([livejournal.com profile] teand's obviously, but then that was an influence) that recognise Sha're as a person apart from Daniel, let alone the only host to directly override a Goa'uld, or a woman who taught herself to read when it was forbidden, or who approached a marriage to an alien with bravery and adaptability and who was teacher and rebellion organizer and was underestimated by almost everyone who ever knew her. The woman was also, not incidently, amazingly emotionally intelligent. How can you not be curious about how she'd fare at the SGC if they'd actually managed to free her? It's such an amazing premise, and RW worked it. For sarahjane, PG? Seriously, I've been so looking forward to you guys being able to see this fic.

Firefly crossover with Stargate: Replicarter goes head to head with River and Zoe. OMG, I'm so sorry, that was a terrible pun. Along Came a Spider by [livejournal.com profile] liminalliz for Cofax, I'd give it PG-13, because it's walking a dangerous line, but they're all accustomed to that and deft at it.

Great trend, eh? Aeryn and Sam, post PKW (a couple of spoilers snuck in there for S3 and 4, I think. I'm forgetting I read them now) I like that Sam offers company and silence and sports, and that combination is cathartic for Aeryn. Ordinary World from sarahjane ([livejournal.com profile] thehallway) links to other parts of the series.

[livejournal.com profile] isabellesmuse wrote Of Belonging to Another for RW in SG-1, and three women who form a rather exclusive club. What is interesting to me is the exploration of lingering effects and coping mechanisms and respect for each other, without ever implying weakness. Sarah & Sam & Vala.

[livejournal.com profile] ann_i_blessing wrote a nice Sam gen piece accidentally coinciding with the samficathon fic being released (which I shall likely get to chatting up next week). This, though, is Sam talking to one of her father's best friends, who is also her boss. Gen. Speaking True. First fic in the fandom, go feed the author.

Oh. Stranded off-world and separated from her team. West by [livejournal.com profile] minnow1212. It's elegant, what she will willingly lose and what she holds on to.

Moebius-fic, wonderful and confusing and displaced: Glimmers, by [livejournal.com profile] greensilver.

Ouch. Tallulah Rasa's Blame it on the Sun, post-Heroes.

More ouch, but of the physical kind: [livejournal.com profile] teand's Infirmary, After With Janet, post rape-trauma, emotions flying everywhere and walking the line between doctor and friend.

[livejournal.com profile] paian's The Appearance of Objects in Depth is a striking portrait of Sam dealing with manipulation and the reordering of her universe, and finding that some things can still be depended upon. Psychologically complex, plotty, sexy, intelligent and sympathetic; hallmarks of paian's writing, now focused on Sam. Warning for slash and some torture. Not work-safe.

[livejournal.com profile] surrealphantast has written a beautiful Sam fic Buffalo in which there is engineering and Sam and a road trip by herself. Not to be missed, Sam fans.

Sal =[livejournal.com profile] troyswann wrote me A Snippet Called A Deeply Angsty Snippet for Minxy In Which Someone Gets Something. She stole my angsty! Stoled it! And Teal'c gets the last laugh. Gen, PG, humor, team.

danvers =[livejournal.com profile] sdraevn has been at request fic and No Peeking, in which Jack and Daniel go native and Sam has to turn her back, is marvelous. Heh. That is EXACTLY how it would go down. Other ficlets may not be gen.

[livejournal.com profile] nandamai's team & family post-Threads is cathartic and lovely: Anything. Sam, gen, SG-1, Season 9.

[livejournal.com profile] katie_m wrote an extraordinary Sam POV piece for [livejournal.com profile] nandamai called A Heavenward Striving. I don't want to say too much about it except that I really wish there had been an episode like this, and really, I thought Sam's voice, and all the character's choices were fantastic.

[livejournal.com profile] surrealphantast wrote a great team-night poker game in which Sam is spectacularly bad at bluffing titled Jello Shots (gen, team, G, very witty) that [livejournal.com profile] katiedammit has prequeled with a Sam and Janet UST-ish ) ficlet about what had happened to the rest of the Jello Shots: Never Bluff a Sucker. Early seasons, team, gen.

[livejournal.com profile] psychofilly's Untitled Sam and Teal'c Have a Bonding Moment and Hammond has to Poke Jack in the Ribs to Make Him Behave fic. This is why you should name your own fics, people, but it's a wonderous friendship moment.

More Sam and Teal'c: [livejournal.com profile] minnow1212's Something Sweet, which is gen, marvelously layered and just really fine.

72000, by claira. Sam is marvelously strong in this, even if, like many after trauma, she has no idea how to direct it. I love the people she actually lets in and says what she means to, I love the flashbacks to Jolinar; her judgements, her kindnesses and under it all, Sam's panic and fury. This is beautiful broken Sam. This is weakness without being weak. There should have been more fallout from that trauma anyway. Also from Claira: salttequilalime which is Sam backstory, and aching. Synonymous is Jack and Sam, a little abyss aftermath and so in character.

Rodney and Sam, friendshippy, crossover SG-1/SGA and a birthday present for [livejournal.com profile] saffronhouse. Cool. I love when they can talk science and it's a part of the characters, and when their personalities shine through as they make connections and get distracted from snarking at eat other. Free 'Verse, by [livejournal.com profile] dashamte.

A rather marvelous Teal'c & Sam friendship moment circa season 2. Excellent (and rare) Teal'c voice and POV, really good characterization of the whole team. Teal'c is underluvd. It's All About Technique by [livejournal.com profile] moonshayde.

Comparing Scars by [livejournal.com profile] cofax7 This is a brilliant Sam & Vala gen moment in S9. You thought they just passed each other in the hall and went 'huh?'. No, neither did I, and neither did the brilliant Cofax.

You Can't Always Get What You Want by [livejournal.com profile] betacandy a fantastic fabulous Moebius tag, with a brilliant drunken dream of Peter Pan by Sam, and more fabulousness in the sequel. I mean, it's just kewl, with the interpersonal relationships and characterizations of the AU team and the battered!Daniel... and I'm partial to Moebius tags. Gen, team.

Het (besides Sam and Daniel, listed above):

In the [livejournal.com profile] mmom community, dedicated to multifandom masturbashun for the month of May. Lots of grand, grand little fics there, but a Teal'c/Sam stood out for me: Tent Walls Part 2 from [livejournal.com profile] geonncannon (NC-17)

Sam and Rodney, NC-17, from [livejournal.com profile] eretria (yes, she who co-authored the marvelous Yoshino Sam/Rodney/John threesome fic):
A Question of Perspective -Or- Reality Doesn't Always Come in Second to Fantasy
. Seriously. FUNNY, IN-CHARACTER, and SEXY. That is pretty high praise, I think.

Comfort fic from [livejournal.com profile] synecdochic: Colorblind, which is Sam/Cameron PWP and sleepy, wordless, sweet, comfort smut. NC-17

Sam/Cameron from [livejournal.com profile] surrealphantast. There's a bike, and Sam fixing stuff, and then telling Cam to fetch her a beer, and is allllll good. High Speed. NC-17

And one from [livejournal.com profile] synecdochic, as apparently Cameron has hijacked her brain (you may be mistaking the look on my face for eagerness when really it's sympathy.) Recovering the Satellites, or Five Ways Cameron and Sam Almost Had Sex.

[livejournal.com profile] ana_grrl's dork!Sam and Rodney from the Moebius alternate timeline. Hilarious, especially since all the comebacks dork!Sam comes up with in her head would so not have been a turn off for Rodney. Oh Boy, PG or something.

I may have mentioned this before (as in before the defense, which is all kinda blurry now) but it's danvers, dude. The Same Boy You've Always Known, for Otter. Sam and Rodney friendship and apocafic, in a way (warning for character death) PG.

Long, plotty Sam & Jack with a great premise: What if, one day, Sam just lost it and snapped and went a bit AWOL. Frankly, I'm stunned it hasn't happened, but it was with great foresight that Jojo had Maybourne approach her with a proposal in a story that played right into Season 5's Desperate Measures. It also does that thing where characters are allowed to have faults, and make mistakes, and accept consequences, and drive their friends to the edge. Daniel and Teal'c exist in this very nicely and importantly and as players in relationships that stand on their own and are as important as the great unspoken thing between Sam and Jack. And when they're pushed to the edge, you do find out exactly what it would take to get them to talk. Crisis, by Jojo, PG-13.

[livejournal.com profile] kellifer_fic is writing lots of great stuffs. Here is da Slot A Into Slot B, which is Sam and Rodney, G rated. Other wonderful things to be found on her LJ.

[livejournal.com profile] troyswann's Palimpsest which is marvelous.

RW pointed me to this and it's rather extraordinary: [livejournal.com profile] lasultrix's Untitled Post-Lost City Fic is some of the best Sam angst I've read, where she identifies some of her issues but can't sort them out and goes in circles trying to find someone who can help. The relationship with Pete is Everything She's Supposed to Want and Jack is the elephant in the room that keeps Sam and Daniel from really leaning on each other, Teal'c is wonderfully present, Janet is heartbreakingly absent. Loved this. PG.

[livejournal.com profile] agentotter = Otter with a gentle shift in understanding, hopefully remembered in the morning: Therefore, Let Us Drink. PG, Sam/Pete, Jack/Daniel, Sam & Daniel friendship.

Nice complexity behind Cameron/Sam: Repeat If Necessary by [livejournal.com profile] kellifer_k.

Also, the beautiful Otter fic (that's agentotter) that got me going with my little smutfic: Ex Gracia (Done As a Favor) (threesome) which is the second of 5 Ways Sam and Rodney Never Made Out, and all of them are marvelous: Fic 1 is Rodney And Sam, Possibly Making Out. Possibly fic#3: De Profundis (Up From the Depths). These may or may not qualify as fic #4 and 5, but she wrote one for me so I'm all giddy: Lapsus Linguae (A Slip of the Tongue) and Acts of Contrition.

Sam and Jack, but not happily ever after: this is, why didn't we notice that we couldn't hold a conversation? This is the characters, this is dark, this is what would happen if they tried to force it. Accident Waiting To Happen by [livejournal.com profile] nostalgia_lj.

Solace by [livejournal.com profile] surrealphantast. A fic with ship and slash on the 1 year anniversary of Daniel's ascension, so creative, and good with het sexy as well as the slash.

Echoes by [livejournal.com profile] raindroproses. Sam/Teal'c post Pete's death (okay, so it's AU. And can I just say, poor Pete, he gets no respect.)

Sam and Jack. Yes, like *that*. I am a multi-shipper, hear me roar:

Of the Sam/Jack recs, which were all really worth reading and there is a link collection in the post's comments which I shan't repeat here, a couple have stood out so far:

Karen T's Fairytales was a lovely introduction to the ideas of possibilities being all well and good, and the loss of them painful, but in the end, it's the working side by side that they're living for. PG.

[livejournal.com profile] surrealphantast's good people trying to do the right thing; there's honor, there's good intentions, there's fairness, there's attraction... and there's a broken stargate to take them to the edge. Interesting Pete, respectful gentle separation from him. Bird Stealing Bread, R, Sam/Pete and Jack.

For the adult end of the spectrum, loved this one: Unspoken, by [livejournal.com profile] elly427, NC-17, spoilers through S7. For continuing attraction and affection and annoying inability to communicate in words, though it seems less important if they're allowed to show what they mean. Great tension.

Also by Elly, a tag for Death Knell that got me thinking: Rationale, NC-17. Because, it's an exploration of slightly fuckedupedness + compromised mental state (exhaustion) + attraction leading to illogical conclusions. Now, this probably wasn't what was intended, but I love the idea that these two ridiculously messed up people (it's a messed up ship, it is) might have been sleeping together for years. YEARS, and telling each other and themselves that sex is different from emotion and separate from team issues or personal life and they might have actually believed it. Just the notion that they could both be able to get that messed up and wrung out that a conclusion like that would make sense. It's a fuckbuddies idea, only not. Somehow, that would make the years of pining so much more acceptible to me, if they were doing something, even if it was just making this more messed up.

Another nice messed up tag for Death Knell: No Quenchless Autumn Breezes by lyssie, which is Sam needing something not delicate and going to Jack; it goes right along with my deeply held believe that Pete was way too vanilla, and that was the problem for Sam ultimately.

Loved the Jack POV in this, because it really is about him and his whole life, of which Sam is a new adventure, but not the only one. Also loved the impression that for Jack, it was doing that mattered, not emotion, not any notion of forever or soulmates, just that they had made it there. Chronology, PG, by A.j. Wonky formatting that appears to be an artifact of posting as a .txt file.

Conversing With Cliffs by randomleaves/JoJo. Really liked this a lot. For Sam having friends of the female, military, smart & funny variety, for someone else opening their eyes to the possibility of having it all, and for, in the end, being competent people saving each other's arses first, with the revelations to be considered at some future time.

Slash (femmeslash):

Sam and Vala, in [livejournal.com profile] sdraevn's ongoing crackfic of marvelousness: Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.

Nice crossover femmeslash of a resignedly long-distance, established relationship sort. Sam/Elizabeth, and a seduction only another woman could have dreamt up. Love that it didn't solve everything, and the feeling that it's just a short moment, what they have; transient. The Secret Laws of Thermodynamics, by [livejournal.com profile] sakuracorr for the Seduction Challenge.

Rocketchick's Before Knowing Remembers is wonderous. Deft use of canon, continuity, Cassandra, AUs.

[livejournal.com profile] sdraevn has written Sleepover which is Sam and Vala offworld and cooking badly, and whoa. Dayum. NC-17.

[livejournal.com profile] janedavitt wrote a sexy Sam and Janet, drinking and dishing about the boys in a fic here: Girl Talk inspired by my little Sam, solo fic! Imagine! Mild R.

AUs/Crossover:

SG-1/Firefly crossover (Firefly 'verse): Cheyenne (part 1) by seldear. The parallels between characters are wonderful.

Meta on Sam, writing her, and various canonical things:

A hilarious celebration of the unhealthiness that is Sam/Jack: Nos's It's Like a Trainwreck!

Also a nuts and bolts discussion at [livejournal.com profile] sg_workshop (community members only) on writing Sam.

My own huge meta post on Sam is here, my Sam fanfic is listed (along with all the rest of it) here.

A handful more Sam-related stories that I've found interesting/thought-provoking:

's Therefore, Let Us Drink (Sam/Pete, Jack/Daniel).

[livejournal.com profile] teand's The Infirmary After (warning: off-screen rape).

[livejournal.com profile] minnow1212's West.

[livejournal.com profile] paian's The Appearance of Objects in Depth (Sam, Jack/Daniel).

[livejournal.com profile] greensilver's Glimmers. (post-Moebius).

[livejournal.com profile] lasultrix's Untitled post-Lost City thing (Sam/Pete, Sam/Jack UST).

Tallulah Rasa's Blame It On The Sun.

And then there's one I really, really want to re-find, and can't. Damn.

Btw, [livejournal.com profile] synecdochic is now writing Jack/Daniel/Daniel's Issues/languageporn:

Whee! i am unashamed even if i pimped myself.

concordances are really hard to keep up and don't let loud people like me make you spend more time on them. i really like your recs because i trust that i will like something if you did so i find i'm rather dependent on them. and then of course i'm an egomaniac and i want to be ON the list. plus, i like that story and it can't go up on area 52 because there's no boysex and it makes me kinda sad. i actually went to the trouble of setting up my website just to give that damn story a home.

i SHOULD see how long the jack/daniel list is getting. i really could use me some new jack/daniel...

Nah, 'twernt nuthin'. Updating is actually something I usually enjoy doing, but for some reason... didn't do for Sam/Daniel recently. The sheepish tone is due only to the fact that my first reaction was along the lines of 'it's there! it's right... huh,' and not in anyway due to a sense of being pushed around, never you fear. With the way RL is going at the moment, I am very unlikely to allow myself to be talked into anything, really, and am more likely to respond with a cheerful sort of 'bite me!' if I really don't want to do something.

Have you looked at Scientific Minds for your Sam/Daniel? I put mine there, but now it makes me sad that Sam/Teal'c can't be there too, or the Sam & Teal'c, or the team fics, or the ones that defy categorization.

Maybe I should just get a webpage. I do assume that people can find my fics here if they want to; it's at least halfway organized most of the time, at least. Eh, maybe later with the webpage. Jack/Daniel sounds good, though. I love those boys.
