I'm home resting for a few hours, and regretting that I'm not more active here anymore, and therefore have no idea if anyone is around to talk to me. Time was, I would absolutely know who, in which timezone, would likely be a) online and b) interested in a fannish discussion.
Possibly the only thing I'm fannish about right now is the Hola! program I discovered when watching the Olympics. It let me (and my computer) be British for the purposes of listening to sane announcers and seeing the entirety of the events I wanted to see. But! Did you know I can also be Canadian, eh? Yes, and therefore stream hdtv.ca home improvement shows, which are much more generously provided about two hours North of where I actually live.
Anyway, I'm home with abdominal "issues" (see? I can be sensitive) which I have not really had since I was a little person. As a result, I am nostalgic for things that have given me comfort in the past. Before you ask, since the wedding plans have hit "BEARS!" levels of messed up, I'm really not craving my family, heh.
General affection to all of you!

Date: 2014-06-06 09:27 pm (UTC)Do you have a date?
Did you have surgery or what?
I am fine; trying to figure out how to get writing more again. Reading SG1, Winter Soldier, Natasha, the odd White Collar fic (not much going on there), not really watching any of the new fandom shinies.
How are you? What are you fannish about? How's your job going?

Date: 2014-06-06 09:50 pm (UTC)W-day is August 9th. I don't usually mind weddings on the day, but I have never enjoyed being part of the planning or the process. I am, as a result, totally over my own wedding. Until the day, which will be fun.
No surgery, just an upset tummy + lower abdominal issues. I've been running to the bathroom a lot and struggling with stomach pain (which is probably just air.) I removed myself from public and am currently hoping my brand new students don't blow up the lab while I'm gone.
I've seen an upswing in SG-1 fic lately it seems! It feels past to me, though. I haven't really even uploaded all my stuff to AO3, have you? I mean, there's a lot of it there, but I stalled out.
I am currently only fannish about Sherlock BBC, but in a lurking/reccing kind of way. I'm even lurking with my reccing, since I don't post announcements when I update my journal recs page, and am not particularly organized about the AO3 bookmarks vs. recs page with notes to myself. I just went on this massive search for a great trans fic I read (side-note, the gender queer potential in Sherlock fic seems to be what I find fascinating about it. The power dynamics, trans characters, asexuality, autism characters that are written in fic really blow my mind. I find them fascinating.) Anyway, it turns out I had the fic bookmarked twice and couldn't find it. So.
My job is probably too much. I think part of why we decided to marry at this point is because we are a little overwhelmed and wanted the commitment of things going right getting priority. I have a toxic department, and am still trying to subtley get out of it, which just adds stress. Time was, I could quit first and get a new job later, but now I need to get the next job lined up without the first catching on. Tricksy.

Date: 2014-06-06 10:18 pm (UTC)Hope you feel better soon!
BBC Sherlock seems to be the fandom that has everything! Fanfic for every taste. I didn't fall in love with the canon, so I rarely read it, (unless karmageddon or kres posts something, lol), but I do read recs from time to time. Did you read that big AU that abundantly queer wrote? Of them both in Afghanistan? I knew her work from Lotrips, so I checked it out.
I read a wonderful Mary/Sherlock/John fic a long time ago that was Sherlock as asexual. It was really good. I'm sure you're finding all kinds of juicy stuff.
SG1 is chugging along. We are small but mighty! The buzz right now is that the original PTB for the movie might be doing another movie sequel, independent of the shows.
Good luck on your job search.
*hugs*

Date: 2014-06-06 11:02 pm (UTC)You know what's interesting to me about fannishness? I get fannish because I feel a canon has such potential and it is either a) incomplete or b) flawed in execution. Sometimes that's a limited vision of flawed that I only want to explore sometimes, but things like LOTR that you mentioned? I admired a great deal and felt no need to fix, so I never got fannish about it. Farscape too, I think (I may have just been too late to the party, though.) SG-1, on the other hand, I felt needed some band-aids and further explanations, and never went far enough! Such an amazing premise full of opportunities only the fans took advantage of. I was almost fannish about Star Trek TNG for the same "epic opportunities!" reason, I think, but would be more so now that I appreciate different aspects of the show. Back when it aired I was an innocent shipper and content with how the show explored it. Sherlock I do find flawed, partly because there aren't enough episodes for anyone at this point, but also partly because the characters are so (intentionally) flawed and that is wonderful to explore/explain/bandaid. What do you think creates fannishness in you?

Date: 2014-06-07 02:17 am (UTC)FANDOM: Mostly I look for chemistry. Jack/Daniel. Natasha/Clint. Blair/Jim. Etc. Even canons that are wonderful, like LOTR and The Vorkosigan Saga and The Left Hand of Darkness, I can enjoy fanfic for, because some writers are just so wonderful at filling in the blanks, extrapolating, or giving me something I didn't know I wanted.
But so far, I'm (for writing) all about the chemistry of the leads. For the canon itself, it's hard to say. I've fallen in love with canons from Dune to Due South. Each one is different. But LOTR is the home of my heart. The books, I mean.

Date: 2014-06-06 09:57 pm (UTC)I have watched and enjoyed Holmes on Homes, but I'm currently fascinated with Income Property. They've expanded it so there's house hunting, choosing of renovation plan, actual construction stuff, and pretty furniture. It makes me happy. Also there's a good attitude there--more autonomy is permitted the homeowners, and there's not as much condescension as you sometimes see in home-improvement shows (the ones like love it or list it really irritate me, for example.)

Date: 2014-06-06 10:05 pm (UTC)Those shows are so contagious for me. I watch a tiny bit and suddenly I'm like "MUST REARRANGE MY ROOOOOM~"
I wish I knew how to get you access to Country Music Television because the Canadian country music vibe is so deadpan and awesome I love it. I've been pulling extra shifts with a client who watches CMT 24/7, so I see things like the announcer say, "So-and-so singer has just married and says he and his wife are not looking for kids yet; they have two sugar gliders and that's enough. What's a sugar glider, you ask?" [Cut to stock footage of sugar gliders and the wikipedia definition] "They're terrifying flying rats. But apparently more fun than children. Well, we wish them the best of luck."

Date: 2014-06-06 10:42 pm (UTC)I... may have to find a way to watch CMT. I really live near the border, honestly. Sometimes I think I could easily abandon the US fuckery for the politely dry neighbors to the North.

Date: 2014-06-07 11:13 am (UTC)I am also having similar feelings of missing the easy fun interactions here, but being similarly guilty not really being active myself (reading religiously but not...commenting much or posting or anything). Somehow the homesickness of moving here brought on a resurgence of SG-1 love and I've been rewatching seasons 9 and 10 and remembering how much I love these characters (except Landry, who is an ass). Teal'c! Sam! Cam! Daniel! Vala!
I'm sorry to hear about the "BEARS!" and I hope things somehow improve.
