Things that are good
Jan. 18th, 2011 07:50 pm1. I was sent home with both of my parent's Christmas stockings, which they've each had since they were children. Both had moth holes and bad darns. Being the knitting goddess that I am, they are all mended.
2. I also managed to knit my Dad a replacement pair of socks, since his Christmas socks didn't fit (I ran out of yarn! Woe.) So they'll have a neat care package soon.
3. Dad's too small socks are the right size for ME! Win!
4. My Mom gave me my regalia for Christmas, which is, as I think most of us know, possibly the most ridiculous, impractical items of clothing ever invented, but they let me go see my kids graduate. The hood was sent to my house, since it wouldn't arrive before Christmas. I have thus sent a photo of myself (in a peacoat, rather than a black robe, but) wearing my hood out in the snowy yard. This led to Dad making superhero jokes and me spending a joyful hour or so out setting the timer on my camera to get photos of me making like superman in my green and blue striped hood-cape. Up, up and AWAY!!!!!! I'm sure they'll go over well too.
5. The days are getting longer! It was light when I left for work this morning and last night (I worked a bit later this evening) it was LIGHT WHEN I GOT HOME AT 5. This is awesome.
6. Star Wars by Dr. Suess = genius?
7. How to get into 20 classic science fiction shows Note: I'm sure that Firefly and Farscape aren't on there ONLY because they have their own posts upcoming.
8. I have been rewatching Star Trek: TNG, mostly because my brother uploaded it onto my new shiny external hard drive as a gift. My main strategy has been to rewatch all the two part episodes first (though, I've skipped Farpoint) and I am having a completely different love for this show on this go 'round! I can't get enough of Geordi and Data hanging out! Worf's every reaction is priceless! I could happily lift Troi and Riker right out of the show and add MORE GUINAN. Back in the day, when I was a hermit-like pre- and early teen and this show was the best thing about Friday nights? I was all about the doctor. Also I identified with Wesley (my Dad was so, so not interested in Wesley and he had to put up with me). And maybe the Captain, when I was feeling shippy. I still appreciate the hell out of Dr. Crusher for giving me a competent, athletic, sciency chic, but all those other characters I was ignoring are just pouncetacklehugging me with their awesomeness. D'awwwwwwwwwww.

Date: 2011-01-19 10:53 pm (UTC)8) AW. A while back I randomly put an episode in (the one where Q offers Riker powers of the Q) and it was so...precious. The actors playing Worf and Geordi (GEORDI! He was always one of my favorites, after Tasha and Ro) and Data all did a pretty good job with the acting. Most of the rest of the cast was pretty wooden. And then you had Patrick Stewart prancing around the set, happily, vigorously chweing any piece of scenery he got within 5 feet of, proudly orating Shakespeare at Q, and just being Such A Trained Shakespearean Actor, you just want to pinch his cheeks. More ridiculous than I remembered finding it the first time around, and still entirely awesome.

Date: 2011-01-20 12:33 am (UTC)Oh, Data. You got so cool when your actor got some rehab. Go you, dude.
Geordi and Data are freaking adorable. When I was younger, I think it seemed like there conversations were always some version of Geordi trying to explain how a particular emotion felt, without referring to other emotions, which he could never do, and which always seemed to end with some surprised awareness of that, and disappointment that he couldn't help.
This time, though, I was watching and so moved that this guy who relied on technology, who worked with it and anthropomorphized engineering, enjoyed Data's company, and probably had to remind himself to project *less* onto the guy. This time, I read Geordi's surprised awareness as one more time when he realized "oh yeah, I forgot he can't do that, dammit. I'm supposed to remember." And the scene Time's Arrow? Data's head has been found by archeologists on Earth, and Geordi needs to talk about how it makes him feel and it's ADORABLE.
