minxy: Teal'c raises a hand to say "hey". (French Quarter at Night by Diane Millsap)

I am sick. This *bites*

So, in a 'misery would greatly prefer other people to be happy' gesture, please comment here if you would like a DreamWidth invitation. I'm a beta tester over there (and will likely port my minxy handle there very soon, though I have an ambitious goal of updating all my masterlists of recs when I do) and I would be happy to issue invitations when DW goes into open beta (or just lets me issue invitations. They are wisely not giving us access codes to issue until they're ready). ETA: I still have plenty of room on my list, so speak up if you fancy an invite. If you're curious about the DW schedule of beta testing and why you need an invite (or not), Synecdochic explains it really nicely here. /ETA

Now, the industrious folks over at DreamWidth (and I have been so impressed with all of them: the masterbrains, the volunteer wranglers, the codemonkeys... everyone is competent, committed and gracious,) are going to need capital. So if you were planning on spending the minimum $3 for a paid account for one month (which gets you in, and they are a very inclusive bunch, they won't kick you out) or even mudwrestle for a permanent $200 account (I think that's the number) then please don't request a free invite. If spending money on your blog is just beyond you right now (and, boy, do I understand, as it's beyond me) then holla. If you'd prefer to be anonymous to the blogworld in general, I'll screen comments requesting an invite unless explicitly invited to unscreen them.

All comments expressing sympathy with my ridiculously ill state will be unscreened and treasured. Just make sure you spray me down with lysol before you try to hug me.

ETA: oooh ooh OOH! You know what else? I'm going to start posting my [livejournal.com profile] stargate_summer story draft over there. It's gen and Teal'c early episodes (with the team, but all Teal'c POV) and I need a kickstart to get myself writing the draft and not just the outline. I'll post under a filter for cheerleaders, so if you'd like to help me fill in the missing bits, make sure you mention it once dw!minxy goes live.

ETA2: I'm really too sick to be trying to construct blog posts. It's really easy to sign into DreamWidth using a LiveJournal handle and OpenID account. It's a good way to see what's happening, and fandom is already staking out it's smutty, smutty corner with a commentporn battle. Bless us.

Eeesh, I really hope you get better. *does the tenative air-hug thing*

I was so excited to get a Dreamwidth account. I really do think "mudwrestle" is the word for what laying hands on a Seed account will look like.

It certainly looks that way, doesn't it? And go them, you know? They really deserve to have d's mojo working for them.

I'd love an invite, please! I've been watching the OTW & Dreamwidth unfold in quiet interest lately. It's all very impressive and shiny :D

I have an invite to dreamwidth and you are first on my list! Would you like it? The caveat is that they're still in closed beta and there are glitches yet, etc. etc. I'm happy to wait until open beta and reinvite you if you prefer, but that's, erm, only two weeks from now, really.

Also, if you'd like the invite, will the livejournal.com email address work as well as anything?

Sorry! Rather I just need you to confirm that you still want the invite, since you've already provided me with her email.

I feel silly. As you were!

I may not have the money for the $200 account but I think I could swing $3.00 a month. That said, if you do have a beta testing invite, I'd love to give it a go. And I do hope you get better. It sucks being sick.

Hello! I have open beta invites, if you're interested. Please let me know the best email address to use, if you haven't already staked your claim on dreamspace.

Oh, I'm so excited about Dreamwidth. I would just love to tell you.

Do you remember back when we got kicked off the BBs at skiffy? For being slashers or talking off topic or daring to make the boards something other than what TPTB thought they would be? When we came to LiveJournal I thought that was going to be our backyard, more than the yahoo group, because Fandom already thrived here.

And then Live Journal sold out to Six Apart who sold out to someone else or something something I can't keep track of all of it. But it was opaque, even to those in my aquaintance who really keep track of the code and the adjustments and the news feeds. Journals and communities started getting banned for doing fandom kinds of things. It... was a little familiar.

So, aquaintances on LJ, turns out, are really smart. [livejournal.com profile] synecdochic, who is an avid slasher and fanfic writer, used to work for LiveJournal, and is a primary mind behind DreamWidth. She and Mark, the other half of the dynamic duo, started with the LiveJournal open source code they used to work with, and built the code they always wanted. Are trying to create a culture than includes rather than excludes, and they are trying like hell to do it right, using all they know. No ads. No crazy low word count posting limits. No strange 'friends' titles for journals you just want to read (it's your reading circle) a MUCH BETTER way to organize how you want to filter your reading circle, how you differentiate between people you want to read and people you want to have access to your locked posts.

It's just... so smart. So far, I'm so, so impressed. Down to just laying solid groundwork, they seem to be doing everything right.

You can check out some other people's posts, if you're interested? Ivory Gates (http://ivorygates.livejournal.com/103014.html), Synecdochic in general posting about DreamWidth (http://synecdochic.livejournal.com/tag/dreamwidth) and her initial introduction to it. (http://synecdochic.livejournal.com/304699.html)

I could go on, but I'm hyped on cold meds, alas. It's killing my productivity.

Thanks for the info...I'll check it out. I do so love synecdochic's fics and think she is brilliant so anything she's connected with has to be good.

And here's some virtual tea and sympathy for you too which I meant to include in my first post, but my scattered brain is crazy today! *passes over tea with honey and lemon vodka*

God, tea with honey and lemon vodka sounds *perfect*. What a brilliant idea.

Anyway. I wanted to tell you that Synecdochic Explains It All (http://synecdochic.livejournal.com/323228.html#cutid1) regarding DreamWidth. A very nice, concise descriptions of what's up.

Yeah, unfortunately the only way I can fit Dreamwidth onto my monitor is to make it too tiny to read.

I have no squee.

Dreamwidth is too wide.

Date: 2009-04-02 03:07 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_minxy_/
It's too wide? Isn't there a way to resize it? I think they're doing a lot of the coding in CSS just so that permanent settings *are* flexible for different conditions. How big is your monitor?

And, actually, since they're still coding like mad and changing things, what browser do you use so I can tell them?
