fic writing!
Dec. 13th, 2008 03:02 pmHaving just fallen into the blackhole of wikipedia (as one does,) I am now convinced that my entire Sunday might best be filled with watching jidaigeki films. Kurasawa, here I come! I wonder if there's a video store here that would have a decent selection? I'm thinking the comic/anime shop might be my best bet, if I were into *buying* copies of Seven Samurai and The Magnificent Seven (research can be expensive, yo. I thought science was bad!)
That's right, this potentially giant story I'm writing might best, at this point, be characterized as 'the one where they're all ronin."
Note: ronIN, not RonON; though the latter would be interesting (and cracked), it is not this story.
Do you think they'd kick me out of
stargate_summer if I turned in something less than 50,000 words? I've never written a story that long before, and this could be that long, but what if it isn't, you know? But now I'm really in love with the idea of being assigned to an artist partner who can make Teal'c look all samurai-without-a-master. (TWO SWORDS, TEAL'C! Tell me that's not uber-cool, man. There's a reason you like Star Wars so much, admit it.)
Also, O'Neill is totally a ninja in this story, but he does not find that *nearly* as entertaining as Sam secretly thinks he should. Daniel will tell Jack about the Magnificent Seven, though, then he'll be okay.
Daniel is pretty sure that he doesn't have a role in the band of ninjas, and this makes him sad. He is, of course, desperately mistaken, but isn't he always?
Okay, gotta go winetasting. BYE, GUYS.
ETA: for clarity, I'm not going to reset this story, it's in the familiar Stargate 'verse. I am, however, going to borrow mightily from the masters here, as clearly they are all ninjas (okay, ronin, but ninjas sounds better) and they never told me before. Then again, they weren't all ronin until I set the 10 minute AU into play. So there you go.

Date: 2008-12-14 08:03 am (UTC)Teal'c won't get stealth, not at first. He's a "you'll be facing me when I kill you, and you'll be armed," kind of guy.
And right now he's facing me and telling me to write a story, so.

Date: 2008-12-13 11:27 pm (UTC)Oh god. I think I would love you forever if you wrote this. This is BRILLIANT.
(Although now the twelve-year-old in me who was VERY SERIOUS about historical accuracy wants to know if it's actual ninja or the romanticized version everyone thinks of these days. [What? I had a very serious love for the Sengoku period as a child.])

Date: 2008-12-14 08:02 am (UTC)Um, not a resetting AU (if that's what they're called), they are not *actually* ninjas, but rather the proper setting for the early seasons lends itself *really* *nicely* to the tropes, honor system and conceptual story arc of a samurai story.
So an early seasons AU heavily influenced by Kurasawa films might be where I am right now.
(I am now going to go look up Sengoku, but I had serious love for Feudal Japanese culture as a kid too--I'm aiming for acuracy, not romance. This started out an apocalypse story after all, although that doesn't preclude romance, I grant.)

Date: 2008-12-14 08:15 am (UTC)(The Sengoku Period is also known as the Warring States period, which is the one right before the Tokugawa (or Edo) Period. A lot of the samurai stories come out of this period.)

Date: 2008-12-14 05:38 pm (UTC)This is kind of why Oda Nobunaga and, after he was killed, Tokugawa Ieyasu were able to come to power at the end of the period and establish the Tokugawa shogunate (which then lasted roughly 200 years).
Roughly speaking. There's a lot more in there that I can't remember before drinking coffee.

Date: 2008-12-14 12:55 am (UTC)The Seven are:
Chris (Yul Brynner)
Vin (Steve McQueen)
Harry (Brad Dexter)
Bernardo (Charles Bronson)
Britt (James Coburn)
Lee (Robert Vaughn)
Chico (Horst Buchholz)
Chris and Vin, old friends, survive. They seem obviously to correspond to Jack and Sam. Chico also survives and stays with Petra, the village girl. This might correspond to Daniel if you want to make Sha're the village girl. Of the remainder...
Well, the most samurai-like would be Lee but Bernardo is the one who bonds with the village children, behavior we have also seen Teal'c display.
You need to fill out the other characters somehow. You might bring in Mitchell and Vala, I suppose, but that still leaves you one short for your Seven. Jonas? Hm.
You've got Hammond for the village elder, I guess, or to be the one who brings the Seven into the picture. Eli Wallach's role pretty much has to be a Goa'uld. Ba'al? Apophis?
I never liked Major Davis much so I guess he'd do for the weaselly bartender.
This is starting to sound like a lot of fun. I look forward to reading it!

Date: 2008-12-14 07:57 am (UTC)I'm not actually writing a western AU, or crossing over with the period of either Samurai or the Wild West, only being heavily influence by them. But everyone I tried to get to watch films with me tomorrow innit interested. How is that even possible?
...more commenting all over you tomorrow, no doubt.

Date: 2008-12-14 11:33 am (UTC)But I do like me some movie talk.
To give you an idea of who you're dealing with, two of my favorite flicks are THE LION IN WINTER and THE REF, because the family dynamics displayed therein make me feel Right At Home...
That said, on your current movie palette I've seen CHUSHINGURA, THE SEVEN SAMURAI, YOJIMBO and the SAMURAI trilogy. It's been awhile, though, and I'll be working from memory so there may be a few booboos on my part.
