My fucking town is on fire. Dudes. This is such a big reason I can't stay in California long term; it's just way too dry here.

Anyway, it is a brush fire that got hugely out of control due to the high winds. Lots of homes lost, but largely mansions at this point. My friends in the working class neighborhoods are under mandatory evacuation orders.

At least twice a year, you guys, there are major fires here.

This is the first one within city limits, though. So sad to see the homes on fire.

The moon is full and blood red. The wind is hot. We lost power city wide for about an hour and it was apocalyptic how all of us were milling about the street watching the fire on the hillside spread without challenge.

The helicopters have arrived, though. And the moon is full so they have light to do night drops.

I hope Ed's house doesn't burn.

I hope you're doing okay. And I can totally relate to fire season.

I'm okay, just a little alarmed right now. We have one evacuee on an air mattress so far.

I just. In Oregon fire is warmth and clearing of yard debris. Here it's alarm.

It's going to go on for days, isn't it? If it hits Oprah's house it'll make Entertainment Tonight, mark my words.

I hear you. I went through the Oakland Hills fire with one eye on the TV and one foot ready to go out the door just in case the fire jumped the Claremont Hotel.

Urban fire is a scary thing.

Oh, god. I remember my senior year of college when there was fire from Los Angeles to San Diego and the evacuation line was less than a mile from my school and we sat in our rooms with the doors and windows closed and tried to do homework while we listened to the clumps of ash hit the ground outside.

Stay safe! I hope the wind and other bits of weather cooperate and they manage to contain it quickly.

Wind = not cooperating. Smoke is prohibative, I think. There may be no drops tonight, though they say conditions are improving though it is not remotely contained.

Hope it doesn't make it downtown. I know the firefighters won't let it, of course. But it's not far away.

Oh, jeez. Bad wind, no biscuit!

*crosses fingers for downtown* The firefighters certainly will try not to let it but sometimes these things....not so easy to contain.

Gah. Here's to massive improvement of conditions overnight.

I hope *your* house doesn't burn! Sometimes it doesn't much more than the right wind for something like that to get completely out of control. Keep your eye on it and stay safe. ::hugs you::

My house is downtown. If they let it get that far, it'll be a much bigger disaster than it currently is. And California is nothing if not prepared for fire season. The string of borrowed trucks and helicopters is still arriving this morning.

And the wind tends to be much, much calmer in the mornings, so this is their best chance for containment.

Eddie evacuated, as did Camille. Tim crashed on our floor on an air mattress. The professor from next door parked his VW van (and sleeping family) in the university parking lot and was in ridiculously early this morning.

The fire was across the street from his house last he knew.

I'm a little freaked out.

We get some brush fires here when the season is very dry and it's very scary having it so close. i'm hoping for rain for you.

Best thing anyone can do.

Except the firefighters, of course. They're busting their asses.

We have a lot more firefighters than cops in this town, even when we aren't borrowing everyone else's firefighters and helicopters.

Wow. Go NPR.

I've never lived in California before. I find I don't think I can stay for too long.

I had to evacuate because of fire last year, so I totally get the on edge thing you all are going through. The helicopters are amazing to watch, though, and will hopefully pull you all through like they did us. Take care!
