minxy: Teal'c raises a hand to say "hey". (French Quarter at Night by Diane Millsap)

You know how, when you're writing, you sometimes get the feeling that you're trying to do something you haven't done before, and you haven't quite sorted out the details of how that's going to actually happen? I'm there with my current story, which feels dangerously epic, but so far is being written in my normal, fairly terse style; it feels like something is missing.

Then I (re)read this: [livejournal.com profile] frostfire_17's At The Hour When We Are Trembling. [livejournal.com profile] thefourthvine recommended the story the other day (in an SGA recs post, actually), and it really is that good. If you haven't read this extraordinary SG-1/SGA crossover apocafic, you're in for a really fantastic yarn. Well crafted, incredibly well characterized, and a surprising pairing between the last two men on Earth (not really, but they feel like they are.) Slash. Novel-length.

Anyway, I'm indebted because reading that story clicked a few things over in my head, and I have a framework, I have a notion of an outline for the next bit, and I have a purpose for my guys, even if it's just traveling for the moment.

Other recs:

If you like apocafic (and who doesn't?) then you should also read [livejournal.com profile] dragojustine's The Stars Up Above You Feel Wrong, for the interminable wait while other people be the heroes. Banters and trying not to think about it and everything just a little sharp. A pointed little ficlet. Team, worksafe, SG-1. Set prior to Forever In A Day, so earlier seasons.

[livejournal.com profile] 6beforelunch has a sweet aftermath story, where Cam picks them up and puts them in a room and hopes they come together. The fatigue is palpable, their perceived weakness is heartbreaking, and it's so sweet to see them rely on each other. A little bit of catharsis: And There's Screaming in the Stillness (SG1, PG-13, team)

[livejournal.com profile] paian takes a long walk through all the landmines that get planted in a relationship when you don't have the time for emotional honesty. The resulting weekend is filled with revelations that feel like ripping off a band-aid. The Jack and Daniel of her 'verses, though, are believably capable of talking through their problems if they must, and I love that her Jack, even though he can talk through something, still prefers to show what he means. This story is very NSFW, and not easy, but I think it's kind of wonderful. Under Wraps Jack/Daniel, SG-1, NC-17 (for just a lot of bouncing in and out of bed in various stages of emotional intimacy).

A couple of Cameron/Teal'c stories (EEEEE!!!):

First one is from [livejournal.com profile] princessofg, who writes them sparring and kneeling and plays with Cam's knowledge of Jaffa culture elegantly. Love the implied depth of other friendships with the rest of the team, the humor, and the sense of inevitablity and need. When You Know What You Know, Cam/Teal'c first timed, NSFW, no particular spoilers besides late seasons cast.

Next is from [livejournal.com profile] janedavitt, who takes them into established relationship. This one is a doozy, because you have two people deeply invested in kindness and manners and formality in some respects, but Jane writes the completely scorching contradiction they've always had where they prefer roughness with each other. Like, really, serious roughness. This is a short little bit of sexiness packed with intimate negotiations from name to intentions, and you know this is one of those relationships where they'll have the conversation once and the message will be received. Past A Certain Point, rated R, and you might possibly get away with it at work, but it is a conversation in bed.

Is there a pairing that Jane *can't* write? I'm just asking. I think she sold Jack/Teal'c at one point, even. Such skills.

Back from the mixed up files of stuff written a while ago: [livejournal.com profile] destina's Payment for Charon, which is early season's Jack/Daniel, with all the tangled emotions and upheavals and heartbreak that implies, and moreso. It's a wonderful tug on your heartstrings. Jack/Daniel, not safe for work, I'd say.

And more early seasons, yay! This is a Crystal Skull ficlet, worksafe: Que Sera Sera, from [livejournal.com profile] jd_junkie. Not precisely gen, but it's a worksafe kind of slash. And an edged teasing that still looks out for their own.

And one last Jack/Daniel from [livejournal.com profile] dragojustine: an unnamed (unimportant) argument, a moment between where choices are made, and then a universe of possibilities opened up. Lovely ficlet. Fighting Insticts. Jack/Daniel first time almost, safe for work.

I think I'll hold to SG-1 recs today. I have a few others in different fandoms, but they'll keep.

Also, there's the pimp your top five favorite stories author meme going around. [livejournal.com profile] abyssinia4077 has a partial list of authors here. (Bless the librarians.)

Aaaaaaaand I AM LAME and I forgot [livejournal.com profile] synecdochic (not because she's forgettable, either, because I am lame.) (Certainly not because she hasn't written anything, you know?)

So, Syne has been a writing fool lately. In her LJ, you will find:

Not just early seasons gun-training and loggerheads with Daniel, but Jack commanding in the first part of season 1: still sorting out personalities and navigating a new team. Extraordinary moment that would have turned out so differently at any other time in the series. Live Fire, gen, Jack and Daniel.

The Only Winning Move is wacky SG-1 training exercises set in early Season 7, when the team was renegotiating all it's dynamics as Daniel regains memories. A pretty hilarious romp that by-the-way reveals a great deal about the characters as they play with skill and cunning. Also gen, also worksafe.

Then there's an ongoing series she has about Cameron and Sam's friendship before Cam joined the F-302 program, before he joined SG-1. The association is so easy to believe, and the notion that they'd have a relationship like this is not a big stretch. Christmases over the run of the show, this is Season, what, 3? Right after Sam rescues her father in Jolinar's Memories. Bound To. This is Cam wondering where she is, and the rest of the team wondering who he is.

Stories from the Mezzanine AU that Syne wrote with [livejournal.com profile] ivorygates:

Both Hands is a coda to the stories that came before, established relationship and a need that Daniel hadn't seen, and learns to meet. The ways that these three navigate a poly relationship, and give and take and support are awe-inspiring. Not safe for work, really really, poly, kink, AU. Cammie/JD/Daniel.

Early years for Cammie and JD include all manner of needs of their own; Love is a Verb is Cammie's, how she needs, how she's cared for, and what they learn. Not safe for work (NOT!) but an extraordinary story of disability and limits and choices and care.

[livejournal.com profile] synecdochic also finished the second novel in the extraordinary back-of-the-envelope AU Broken Wings. Titled A Howling in the Factory Yard, you start the healing of Jack's clone (called JD)'s first years (Dial Tones), the redepmtion that Jack finds as a result of associating with him (Carthago Delenga Este) and then the slippery slide of identity, home, breaking and the faith that you can reopen old wounds and find a way to heal the scars over again. It's the storm after the eye, and luckily enough the Prologue for After (book 3) has already been written as a promise.

And, hey, I've only got links from people on my flist. If people want to drop me links to their lists I'd love to add them.

Also, yay to reccing Cameron/Teal'c stories. It's a pairing I'm very open to in theory (because Cam's awe and hero-worship is palpable and I LOVE their friendship) and have yet to manage to work for me as a reader so now I have more to try!

I love them. LOVE. And yet, they are really hard to write. You just find them sitting in the same room and gazing longingly at one another for aaaaaaages. (We think that's longing on Teal'c's face; he might just be messing with Cam.)

I don't think she has a webpage, actually. Or at least, I don't have an easy link to it available. HOWEVER, a little birdy (*cough*destina*cough*) unlocked the story, so now it's readable to the masses! YAY!

You're welcome for the rec, dahlink. You know I'll enable Cam/Teal'c in every shameless way available to me. *G*
