Point: I have a cold. As a result, I'm amped up on meds, and I can't be held responsible for anything I may say (or write).

Point too: I have given up commuting by car to work and it's led to so many moments of characters everywhere on the morning and evening buses.

Yesterday, I left work early and stopped by the farmer's markets and store to get the fixings for a nice light soup. For reasons that might be blamed on pseudoephedrine, I could have nothing but French Peasant Soup (a white bean, leek and cabbage soup, no actual French peasants, recipe is now in the comments) which required me to locate a ham hock. I don't know why this seemed so critical, but three stores (including a butcher shop that has switched to being a deli without changing it's name) later, the manager at the fairly upscale supermarket has run all over the store fetching, wrapping and pricing a $2 piece of ham bone for me. That was so sweet. Also the soup is pretty wonderful, especially with warm, crusty baguette bread dunked into the broth.

Point regarding stupid American vacation policies: I technically get no vacation days at my job, although it's fairly shocking that I take weekends off without fail. I do, though, get sick days, and I've apparently accumulated enough that when I went in to have this ridiculous time card thing stamped my boss looked at me pointedly and suggested I *take* a sick day or two. He just doesn't realize that every time I vacation it counts towards sick days, I think. We don't pay much attention to reporting that stuff anyway.

Point regarding the remix: I haz crappy first draft yaaaaaaaaaaaay! Now to go over it before begging my poor beta to take a look.

My level of frustration with this story: pretty low, though I worry that I've short changed some (or many) areas. I blame cold meds for all comma splices.
Most disturbing realization at the end of writing this story: I think I completely forgot to include General Landry. Like, at *all*. And he's most definitely in the story that I'm remixing. Um.
Most rewarding realization: Oh dear God I love my protagonist. Forgiveness and then a quest for forgiveness, in that order. She *says* things like this! ALL THE TIME. And it's usually about sex, which is so entertaining.

Point the last: I love cotton clothes. I'm in a tank top and jeans, with a light, soft, loose cotton sweater over, and I feel wrapped up in blankets. I wish I could feel wrapped up in a masseuse, though, since the muscles in my neck and back are sore as hell, but I'll settle for cotton.

Point the last-I-really-mean-it-this-time: I need more coffee. Into the wilds!

Any chance your meds could drive you to sharing the recipe for the soup? I'm making beef/cabbage/tomato soup for our dinner tonight. *puts crusty baguette on list*

Indeed!

My meds are joyriders, obviously, they drive me all the hell over the place.

(if you have time, buy dried beans and soak them at least 5 hours under several inches of water, but canned beans will still only cost you a couple of bucks.)

Melt 4T butter or lard in a heavy soup pot,
Add and saute on low heat for 25 minutes:
1 cup coarsely chopped onion
3 leeks, white part only, sliced
3 celery ribs, chopped coarsely
3 carrots, coarsely chopped,

When the vegetables are soft, add 1T dried thyme, 2 bay leaves, 1-2T pepper and 8 cups of stock (I used a mix of store vegetable stock and a couple cups of beef stock I had frozen). Bring to a boil.
Add and simmer for 40 minutes: ~2 cups white Northern beans (from 1 1/2 cups dried)
1 ham hock (then remove it, cool and return whatever meat there is on the bone back to the soup)
3 parsnips, coarsely chopped (I mention this but completely forgot to buy parsnips at the store, so I omitted them.)

Finally, add half a small head of white cabbage, coarsely chopped,
four (I probably added 8, knowing me) garlic cloves, chopped,
1/2 cup parsley, chopped

Simmer for another 5-10 minutes, adjust the seasonings, and dunk crusty bread in it when you nosh.
Stores well. Is yummy with dark beer. Makes, like, a gallon of soup.

Awesome! Thanks! Sounds very tasty, altho the price of leeks up here would make it a bit expensive for us peasants. :o)I keep both canned and dry beans around as I love all kinds of bean soups. Here's a link to a garbanzo/leek soup from Jamie Oliver that I adore:

All I can say is try it. I can't keep this in the house as the kid will eat all of it no matter how much I make.

Wait, leeks are expensive? Really? That's geography for you. I love this recipe partly for it's inexpensiveness and peasant-accessibility. Huh.

...Could always sub in an extra onion and a little more cabbage.

I'm trying your (Jamie's) garbanzo leek soup just as soon as I get through this gallon (and want soup again.)

*g*

I love recipe swapping.

Cheapest I can find leeks for up here is $2.99 a lb. Fresh produce is really, really expensive here. I'm seriously thinking we may have to move south when retirement time comes because we won't be able to afford to eat on a fixed income. :oP
