(I mean it, y'all need to put on your poker faces right now and stop reminding me of how I'm Slacking off in my official fic pimp job of awesomeness.)
(well, at least better than averageness)
RECS! GETCHER FIC RECS HERE!
This is *classic* Jack and Daniel from the artist formerly known as Danvers: Maut Ka Mandir, worksafe. An AU of fantasticness that bridges Indiana Jones-esque adventuring with our fabulous SG-1 heroes. Teal'c is also present and a really nice anchor to the story.
And also! This weekend only (on account of Monday it loses it's 'insta' status)! INSTA-REC! Another fantastic crossover/AU from Danvers: This one is SGA and X-files and so, so funny. Mulder and Sheppard as the most dysfunctional boyfriends !who affectionately hate each other) ever! Scully and Lorne as their long suffering FBI type partners! McKay needing protection from unknown assailants! Fabulousness. I also love how D ties their character progressively further back into canon as you go through the story, it's just grand. The Real McCoy, SGA/X-files, McKay/Sheppard (and others referenced and implied and created and imagined and stuff), not worksafe.
Speaking of crossovers, janedavitt has a nice essay on the subject here: Crossover Meta. Lots of examples and links and stuff.
I think it is a very poorly kept secret that I would very much like to be a fly on the wall when Teal'c visits some of the more extraordinary Earth creations. This is often caged in a 'we must have more stories of Teal'c in a cathedral' type command, but this! This is also very much of the YES: Flights of Ingenuity, by
aurora_novarum, is Jack showing Teal'c his own kind of cathedral, if a cathedral can be the air and space museum. The character study here is multi-layered and fascinating. SG-1, gen, worksafe.
The
remix_redux this year saw Vehemently (
vee_fic) remixing a Simon and Mal and River story to be a fantastic turning point for the Tams. Escape Velocity is perfect confused and conservative Simon, flying apart as River becomes more grounded. I think the relationship has been begging for this conversation for a long time and I didn't realize. Firefly, gen, worksafe.
Speaking of remixes, which we love (OH, I AM SO SUBTLE,) last year had an anonymous author pinch-hitting for
ivorygates and turning out an extraordinarily entertaining story. The prose here is dry wit, smart as hell, stylish and fascinating; the subject is hilarious 10 minute AU, genderswitch compare and contrast, chaos theory and slash, sort of. It's Cameron and Daniel-in-many-forms: Syngamy, not-worksafe, SG-1.
A beautiful domesticity-of-a-sort between Sam and Jack from
splash_the_cat. Season 10 or so, and how two people of long association deal with relationship bumps when they only see each other... well, when they have the kind of relationship that Sam and Jack, in character and on duty, would have. Real and true and comfortingly flawed heroes, ours. Let Me Tell You the Song of This Town, Sam/Jack, worksafe, SG-1
And a fabulous process of a first time for John: Where You Want To Be, John/Rodney amidst chaos and action and by-the-way guys not in touch with their emotions, per se. Fabulous, and the decisions both of them make at the end pay off so well. From
semivowel, SGA, not work-safe.
A incredibly wonderful kind of cranky from
elishavah for
destina: Jack and Daniel, or Jack/Daniel if you want (depends on your prescription). Five ways Daniel tries to pursuade Jack to let him go to Atlantis: Stubborn Bastards. Great tone and perspectives. Worksafe.
P/N: Happy Birthday Destina!
Ah, this is going to be a danvers heavy recs list I see: consequences of falling, Sam/Vala, on a caravan ride through the desert. Awesome, and not worksafe if memory serves, eventually.
lokei wrote a fun, brief little character study of Daniel from the perspective of new recruits being oriented around the SGC. Apparently his reputation preceeds him, but nothing prepares you for actually seeing him in the halls. Learning Tilt, worksafe.
It goes well with this untitled Daniel ficlet from
6beforelunch, regarding whether Daniel ever gets bullied in a military installation. Very nicely done, too, Jack's general voice in particular is edged with that fierce silliness he developed. Worksafe.
In a dramatic departure from my standard fandom, I read an extraordinary series from
troyswann called Real Boys and then (somewhat facetiously, I think) Space!Mountie. The last was a wip that may still get polished and shined before posting to Sal's website, but it's pretty extraordinary as is. Real Boys etc is a Due South (I know! I've never even seen it, though my housemate R is a fan and just ordered the whole thing on DVD, I think), Ray/Fraser, although the other Ray is also there, and Fran, and Dief the dog, and they're all mesmerizing, even as original characters. Worksafe, and the AU is futuristic, mildly references Canada at a few points and is *awesome*. When Sal builds a world, you know, the atmosphere and space become living characters in the story.
Drat, I still have a dozen more stories to tell you about. I'll post them later today...

Date: 2008-06-15 06:46 pm (UTC)Oh, I just re-read Sal's entire wonderful saga the other night in order to wallow before embracing the final chapter. She world-builds like nobody's business. *lights candle and places on shrine*

Date: 2008-06-15 11:55 pm (UTC)There are more than a few people around this here fandom who have such incredible writing skills I am just blown away. I do wish fangrrling had a little more osmosis involved, though; if we read fanatically, it would be nice to absorb some of the skills we most admire, yes? The universe never reads my letters.

I could be wrong. But it *feels* like it does.
Regardless, YAY YAY YAY Minxy recs!

Date: 2008-06-16 01:23 am (UTC)And that *might* be because I'm trying to do this thing with my story that I haven't done before, but I suspect that really? It's a failure to absorb the necessary skills through the computer keyboard.
