Yes, this is a blatant attempt to seek connection today:

Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] ivorygates who stole from [livejournal.com profile] synecdochic who stole from [livejournal.com profile] cofax7 who stole from [livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63:

Quote a bit of my writing at me? Find that one story of mine that you really like, and find a sentence or a paragraph that presses your prose-buttons in the right way, and comment here with it? Don't care how long or short.

I will extend this to pimped works and meta: tell me about a recommendation that you loved, the fic or the description thereof, what made you want to read and whether you thought I was accurate. I want to know if you've been thrilled by a particular rec of your own work, or if the description pointed something out that surprised you, etc. Tell me if a Sam meta made your day or what about a Teal'c meta made you try writing his POV?

Recs are under this fanfic recs tag, stories are under this tag and in this post, meta is here.

From Stadium Seating (http://users.livejournal.com/_minxy_/65047.html)

“We require spoons to drink a beverage?” he enquired, mildly perplexed as straws joined the spoons in each glass. “Does the ice cream not melt upon addition of liquid, Colonel Mitchell?”

“Not entirely, there’s this sort of crunchy outside around a hunk of frozen goodness,” Mitchell said, abstractly gesturing with one hand as he picked up a larger spoon from the table with the other, “although it does really help to have a hot day behind you to appreciate it, preferably with a good vantage point at a little league game, and I do not answer to Colonel Mitchell on my days off.”

A pointed gesture with the spoon and raised eyebrows was informal, but Mitchell looked at him for a moment longer than necessary. Teal’c found himself nodding with a solemnity he wasn’t entirely sure was appropriate as he inwardly marveled at the myriad ways the Taur’i named themselves. The progressively more intimate names required substantial concentration merely to remember the words, let alone understand the being behind them.

As if it were not gift enough to recognize an individual by more than his function.

You give such voice to Teal'c.

Awww, Stadium Seating. I had a devil of a time naming that one, but the whole story really took me by surprise. And Teal'c often does sneak in these incredible thoughts and comments when I'm not looking (I love that name vs. function thing.)

Thanks.

He'd thought, when he left the Tau’ri to be a politician, that having time to be something other than a soldier would be enough: to be a father, father-in-law, lover, leader. He had failed as a politician, though. Found himself extraneous as a father, in the way as a father-in-law, and unfulfilled as a lover. He could not help but wish for another chance to set down his staff weapon, though; to have the time to be something other than a soldier. Perhaps he was merely becoming an old man, like Bra’tac.

Because I love your Teal'c.

(If you come hide on AIM with me, I will feed you little bits of story. No pressure to have an actual Conversation, just, you know, to keep you going.)

I love Teal'c too. He turns out in such complex phrases and sentence structure, though, that it's amazing the verbage doesn't get opaque.

Thanks for pulling some Teal'c. And thanks for entertaining me this morning.

*squishes you*

So back, just over a year ago, when I was a wet-behind-the ears newbie poking my nose into SG-1 fandom all curious and looking for connection and falling helplessly in love with this character called Sam, I came across a link. I don't remember anymore who posted the link or how I found that post or any of the steps, but I clicked on it. And I found This Sam Meta (http://users.livejournal.com/_minxy_/53469.html) you wrote a while ago. And I read it. And I read it again. And I flailed. Because yay other woman fan in science and yay understanding Sam and yay taking what it is to be a woman and be a science-brain and applying it to Sam and making Sam make sense in all those ways she really, really, really does. And I decided you were awesome and but it was also an old post and I was a wet-behind-the-ears newbie and you seemed impressive and I was shy so I absorbed it all in and read the comments and rejoiced.

And now I "know" you and have talked with you and you are awesome and now I can tell you how much that meta meant to me (only, I probably can't because I don't think I have words to tell you how much that meta meant to me for a variety of fannish and non-fannish reasons). And I have quotes. And I resisted quoting the whole thing":

Second is that Sam does not always know what to do with particular kinds of data. She sees someone coming at her hurting, she might look to Daniel first, then maybe Jack next for orders because she herself hasn't got a clue what to do (doesn’t mean she won’t try if no one else steps up, though). This is part of the reason why Teal'c showing up and handing her Janet's eulogy is so amazingly touching.

And

Can Sam handle people lying to her? It's probably really confusing. And without a very, very good (read, orders from someone else to take the blame) reason, if she trusts you, it would probably read as betrayal of the 'wait, what else have you told me that's false? Can I trust you again? Why did you do that?' sort. You gave her the wrong information, man, that's just rude. Could lead to dismissal out of hand unless she really has to continue working with someone like that.

And really

Which came first, the soldier or the scientist? Oh, the scientist. It sets you apart a bit, if your brain works funny like that. I think Sam has always been aware of the opportunities the military offered and so opted to take advantage of their help in becoming a scientist and found she was also good at the rest. I think she's well accustomed to taking orders, likes when someone else handles the stuff that's peripheral to her focus and is fine with the responsibility lying elsewhere. Of course, now she's be put in command she's probably very concerned with being competent and doing the job well and making people proud, but I think she's in it for the discovery and the adventure and the projects, not the power trip or because she like watching stuff blow up. The military were a means to an end and she respects them and is grateful for the opportunities and the education.

(also I still love "Footsoldiers" whole-heartedly)

You know, I remember starting to write that and thinking it would be a few paragraphs that no on would comment on. Next thing you know, I'm surfacing from a stream-of-consciousness commentary that is longer than some of my stories and really cemented a number of fannish friendships for me. Odd thing, that.

So extraordinary that it was part of your introduction to fandom. Yay! It was cathartic to me too, I'm glad another science chick had it resonate. Yay.

Awesome, thank you for telling me all that.

Also, my, I was quite sure of myself by the time I wrote some of those quotes, wasn't I?

I have SO MANY of your recs pages bookmarked for the day I finally finish watching SG-1, because from what I can tell about you, the recs are going to be to stories I'll love.

Eeee! Are you just watching for the first time? Where are you in the series? Rec pages can indeed be spoilery, but I've been known to put together some recs by season for new fen.

And, yay, that's a high compliment for a pimp, you know. Thanks.

I am watching for the first time! Since I absolutely wasn't going to care about the show, I let myself start from the end, and watched the last half of S10 as it aired in the UK. Then one night a friend and I watched the final three eps, and the combination of "Family Ties" and "Unending" made me fall hook, line, and sinker. So I ahemed it and started with S1. I stalled on the penultimate S4 ep and haven't dived back in, even after buying the complete series box set, because 10 seasons eep. I really need to, though.

You're welcome! It's only the truth. *g*

I always liked these two bits from Run (which I don't think I commented on at the time-- bad me)--

At least he caught her in a good mood this time, for the moment. “Well, Teal’c and I are in a virtual simulation of a battle situation in which a supersoldier has entered the base, you are a virtual character, Jack has gone AWOL on a bike, probably, (Harriman was just going to call you) and I really, really need to you to take the anti-supersoldier weapon to Teal’c outside the gateroom now.” He heard the tell-tale chime of the elevator arriving and stretched, trying to get a foot in the door to hold it while he explained to Sam.

“Okay,” Sam said, “I’m on my way.”

(and then also)

“We’re simulated, Sir,” Colonel Carter announced, “Daniel and Teal’c are in a military simulation."

“Cool, guess that explains the bike,” O’Neill said equably; he and Teal'c looked at each other.

“It absolutely does not explain the bike, Jack,” Daniel Jackson argued tiredly.

“Does too! Ask Teal’c,” O’Neill retorted.

They're so funny and I can really *hear* the characters. :D

It was very interesting to have the key to that story be how Sam and Jack react to being simulations. I remember the aha moment of figuring that out, and I think some of the dialog you quoted may have been my best ever for Jack at least.

Which is a long winded way of saying, thank you for quoting my stuff at me! This was such a joyous ego-boost.

I am new to the whole Stargate, fandom, and fanfiction thing and have just stumbled on to your stuff. It is great! You give Sam and Teal'c such voice. They are my favorites and you just capture them so well! I haven't read all of your fic or even begun to scratch the surface of your rec's but what I have read so far has been quality stuff! It makes my day and makes me excited about the show and characters!
Thanks!

Yay Teal'c fans! Yay Sam fans! You've just so made my day, my friend. Thank you very much, and I hope you enjoy the stories. Look forward to seeing you around--have you seen the whole show or are you watching for the first time now?

Well I have seen a fair number of episodes over the years, but I had only watched them in passing. I didn't have cable and they came on at like 1 or 2 am for a while in syndication so I couldn't see them much. But this year I went to college and started seeing the reruns of Sg1 and the new Atlantis eps on scifi and realized how great it was! Then I looked on Gateworld and found fanfiction too! And I am pleasantly surprised by how much excellent stuff there is written in the fandom. I really love how under-(or un-)explored characters(like Teal'c and sam)/concepts/ideas can be fleshed out through fanfiction.
This summer I plan on sitting down and watching everything in order...
