flirting around fandom
Mar. 20th, 2010 03:11 pmHello.
Wow, that really kind of took it out of me, that whole "think up a greeting" thing. You ever have a day when you realize it will be an absolute miracle if you eat anything healthy for you? My food intake today has consisted of: coffee, cake, and pepperoni. Recently, after the healthy food revelation: tea and dark chocolate. I've only switched to tea because it's afternoon, and I am so far really not on board with the time change yet. This is my attempt to conform. But without actually preparing any food save tea.
So last time we spoke, I was probably not this random. Last time we spoke, I probably sounded like I was on the verge of a breakdown, which, hey! Successful authorial intent communicated, really. Since then, my sweetheart arrived, in a similar state of wanting a break from the world, and the two of us holed up, snuggled one day for a record 3.5 hour marathon, fed good friends on a couple of nights (which briefly jumpstarted my interest in cooking, but it's stalled out again. Or, we're going in fits and starts, since I did randomly make myself apple cake last night, which was also a delicious breakfast. I would have banana bread too, but I'm out of butter, woe. At some point, I should really think of a way to problem solve that. Suggestions welcome.) And you know, it's amazing how he visits every, oh, six months or so, but this town just loves the guy. Small towns, eh?
Anyway the Man I Left Behind, who refused to be left behind, continues to function as my best friend, as he always was, and bring lots of joy to my life, which is wonderful, and be really very in tune with my life as well. The last is an interesting and fascinating aspect to his personality that I never really understood until he focused like a laserbeam on me, and being in tune has lots of really fun side-effects, if you can get over occasionally being dressed alike. Anyway, the love life goes well, and when my Sweetheart left, I was no longer on the verge of a meltdown. Actually, when he arrived I instantly retreated from the breakdown ledge, and moved to successively lower heights throughout his visit.
I got three days of work done since, and today I'm sitting at home and knitting (and ripping out, and reknitting) a pair of turkish socks from the cover of Interweave's Knitting Traditions. They are awesome, but mistakes in the colorwork are apparently, not something I can grok, even if it means reworking a day's progress. Also,
synecdochic and
sarah gave me a sampler set of colorful sock yarn, and I love this way of using several balls of bright colors. I am pleased with the sub of orange for red, but I might have picked too pale a yellow (I adore pale yellows.)
So this email is partly to say I'm feeling much better, thanks for the hugs, and it's partly to mention a couple of things.
1. Ada Lovelace was an awesome software programmer back in the day, did you know? Some might argue that you cannot squee too much about awesome women role models, or about happy things in general. A few intrepid folks declared a 'blog about awesome women in science and technology day!" on March 23, and this is the second year of the event. They'd love to surpass the number of bloggers from last year, so this is a signal boost to say, hey, if you admire a woman in science or technology (broadly defined: past or present, famous or not, someone you know or someone you fangirl), consider pledging to talk about it on Tuesday. Or just do it on Tuesday and link back so they can count you.
There are some awesome techy, sciency women hereabouts.
Go here to learn more, follow the links to pledge. On the 24th, you'll also be able to go there to drop a link to your post. Ada Lovelace Day
Some interesting things you might want to consider: Why March 23rd? Why Ada Lovelace? Whom shall I discuss on my platform that day?
2. There was a nifty post on women and men and bravado and violence and advice and experience by
rachelmanija/
rachelmanija, (Why didn't you kick him in the balls? (mirrored at LJ, different comments,). The finding and reading of Rachel's post brought home to me the value of the crossposting footers on DW, because the comments on the different platforms were illuminating and illustrative. I followed
cesare's guide to how to customize the footers to show the number of comments on the DW post and link back. This post is a test of my coding. Also, an invitation to friend/defriend/watch etc on whichever platform you like. I've realized quite a few people are in both places recently, and I'm chuffed to be able to find them where ever is most convenient. Now you too can experience the joy of me in whatever fashion you choose!
Er, I do realize that I'm not terribly interesting, fannishly, of late. I am a bear of very little brain available for extracurricular activities. I am considering archiving fic at AO3 or a website somewhere, at some point. I'm also considering (for the first time in aaaaaaaages) reworking the fairly good beginning of a giant story I'm never going to write, into possibly a fairly nifty stand alone story. Anyone with any advice there, please drop some wisdom on me; it's been a long time since I've tried to write anything fannish, and I feel rusted shut (oh, Teal'c, your patience is so formidable.)

Date: 2010-03-20 08:21 pm (UTC)either way, no harm no foul. i'd love to look at it again with the idea of making it fit better into canon as a stand alone.
in any case i'm cheering you on.

Date: 2010-03-20 09:12 pm (UTC)They were really on-topic, thank you! I've just reread them.
If you wanted to reread with permission to drop more critical concrit (I'd asked for cheerleading before, I can handle concrit now.) I would love that. Here's the original posting: CoTG 10 minute AU. My current concerns now are: where in the story the groundwork for the epic, huge story needs to be changed. Also what mid-story needs to shift to make the ending a satisfactory pay-off. And last, what needs to happen at the ending to give proper closure (when at the moment the ending is a launching off point.)

Date: 2010-03-20 08:05 pm (UTC)We haven't talked in aaaaaaaages.
(ETA: If you can manage some fruit and something with protein in it, you'll be doing okay.)

Date: 2010-03-20 09:16 pm (UTC)But I have an orange, a couple of mango, and another apple here. As well as some dried fruits, so I will ponder that as I drink another cuppa.
Ages, indeed! *snuggles back*
Have I mentioned that I find your icon wonderful? It is most amusing, and makes me imagine my brain all fizzy (like when you snort a carbonated beverage accidentally, and it gets all up in your sinuses.)

Date: 2010-03-20 09:21 pm (UTC)Anyway, glad you like it :).
(I could do with my brain being fizzy right now, whence the icon.)

Date: 2010-03-20 09:23 pm (UTC)It was interesting to start friends, decide that wasn't enough with just enough time to wake up together a few times (after Earth-moving nights, but still only a few) and then shift into long distance. It didn't happen unless I've told him about it on the phone. We send emails and texts and photos like we don't talk every night. There's a care package war that is fairly hilarious. And that's before one of us visits the other and we have sex back in the picture. Because the sex is truly fantastic, but it's also amazingly important to have important people see who we are together.
Which inevitably means that we cook dinner for friends and family a lot, no matter whether in California or New York, when we're together. It's like we take our real relationship, which is sharing day jobs, and stories and photos and such, and then we add in physically being in the same room, and food. Sometimes it doesn't feel so different from living in the same town in different houses; we just have to wait longer between dates.

Date: 2010-03-20 09:25 pm (UTC)I kind of wish I had a bookmarked folder of people who've posted nifty coding tricks on DW, actually. I always have to go searching since it's so long between posts that I forget the code. *face/palm*
