Life, people. Life is distracting. It doesn't mean I'm not here or I don't love you or get really happy when I see a comment response or whatnot. I'm just... not posting much. I dunno why. (but then I give you a gazillion recs and you love me anyway, right? Right? Guys?)

I have managed about a thousand words on my [livejournal.com profile] choc_fic, though! It's due February 1. [livejournal.com profile] paian gave me the prompt, and I'm afraid I took her musing that it could go interesting places to be part of the prompt too... and now I'm not sure if my protagonists and my narrators, or my POV character really overlap much at all. It's a wierd little story that wants to be told. Should be interesting to see if it gets any reaction.

Bunch of people are changing the links to their websites. I think this is a massive update on the recs posts waiting to happen. Not that it hasn't been aaaaaages since I updated the master lists, but still. MASSIVE UNDERTAKING. Oh dear.

Anyway, recs! Long overdue Yuletide recs first!

[reccer's note: I'm not going to even try and track down LJ names for these (even though I definintely know some names, I'm being lazy) but if you know them, I'd love to credit internetly.]

The Family Stone is a lovely movie that actually stars a man who is a friend of a friend (I've met him). The deaf community being what it is, both, you know, existentially and also being what it is to me, this film has a soft place in my heart and will always be significantly related to the mother-deaf son relationship. As such, seeing a story about the deaf (gay) son's marriage and family with his partner (a black man), is fascinating, especially as relates to the Mom. Thus, therefore, I loved this story about Patrick and how he became a part of the family, dealing gently with race, with deafness, with loss and gaining of family, and with relationships and love. For Everything, Patrick, canon Patrick/Thaddius, PG, by Cori Lannam.

The Story of the Djinni and the Professor is 1001 Arabian Nights, and a fun poke at know it all people trying to play players. Smart and sassy. PG, by Gray Cardinal.

A lovely meeting of fandoms in this gorgeous crossover--it's a spoiler to reveal both fandoms, so I'll tell you that it's mostly Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials, and that the other is worth finding out (similar tone and age and medium, it works seamlessly). Plus, how much do I love that Will studies physics? It's theoretical physics, mind you (and what is it with my fandoms not bringing the love for practical physics? You know they're going practical at somepoint, yet they call themselves 'theoretical'. Existential much?) Elegant inheritance from the books. The Ivory Horn, by kaydee falls.

Two Pushing Daisies stories, with fun fun POV characters:

The first is Twice Upon a Time, in which the narrator can't resist stepping into his story, and then can't help trying to undo his actions by... well, doing more. Elegant world behind the one we usually focus on, but the narrator's quirky, tone-setting voice is spot on, and the story itself is simple and complex all at once. PG, Chuck/Ned, and the narrator, by Kaneko.

The second is The Unassuming Adventures of the Knitting Detective, which has two particular things that make it a winner: fun little day in the life moments spun out from a canon quirk, and EMERSON. I really adore curmudgeonly Emerson Cod, and his voice and adventures here are fabulously lovable. By sheepfairy.

And then this, my tried and true Yuletide uber-fandom: The Dark is Rising series from Susan Cooper. I haven't read it since I was a kid because there's something about the choices the adults make at the end of the series that I suspect would not sit as easily with me now I know how completely adults can fail, but I think this story is enough to restore my faith in the ability of the kids to thrive, to manage just fine regardless. This is a quest after they're grown, when Barney is (marvelously, wonderfully) a sculpter, and coincidences begin to build. Wonderfully in the spirit and fantastic themes: The Ascent, by Annakovsky.

And because I can't bloody resist (it's my Yuletide uber-fandom!) Frostfire's Brenin. Normal after extraordinary, and finding one's way, and one's identity. Lovely work. They were, afterall, pre-teens when the extraordinary happened, it makes sense that there would be some, er, need to define themselves again, constantly. Brenin, Will/Bran, so warning for non-canonical relationship there (I mention it because it's the only 'ship I'm currently reccing, which is most interesting!) PG-13, I suppose.

Down in Threes is the lovely continuing narrative of Mary after the finale of Gosford Park. Her voice is lovely and sweet and lyrical and knowing, just as Mary ought to be. PG, by Tenika D.

The Princess Bride: There Will Be No Survivors (Except for the Survivors Behind the Curtain, But Pay no Attention to Them.) Lovely post-movie training of Inigo to be a dreaded pirate. Fantastic, and I love the solution that all the Dread Pirate Robert's have built over the years. PG, by knightshade.

Then the two Robin McKinley works that I've recced before (but now I have the authors!)

Good and Faithful, in the Blue Sword series (Damar series) is a fantastic acknowledgement of the others who bridge the Damarians and the Homelander ways. By Cyphomandra.

And Brought to Light, from Sunshine, in an attempt to balance light and dark, and an admirable restraint from easy answers. (I just read this novel over vacation and I very nearly inhaled it it was such a great romp of a story. What a gift to find Yuletide stories like this posted not two days later, man!) By innocentsmith.

By way of transition: A Harry Potter story, though with these, I'm almost always hopping back in time to the Marauder's (slashy) past. This is Remus, and Sirius and James and Peter, all being just adorable as there are revelations and roughhousing and realizations and teasing and wonderfulness. [livejournal.com profile] theemdash's Kissing Practice, slashy kissing cuteness, PG-13.

Also, SPN crossover with His Dark Materials: A Lie the Size of the Sky, from Signe ([livejournal.com profile] oxoniensis, she of the porn battle V currently going on.) This is Sam/Dean, on a case, that turns into another case (surprisingly fascinating, since I have never actually read wingfic before) that turns into a sweet, building, romance. Daemonfic and AU and wincest, folks, but it works so much better than that three word descriptor implies. SPN/His Dark Materials, Dean/Sam, worksafe. Signe has a primer for all you need to know about His Dark Materials linked within, too.

Stargates: Chasing Regret Through Sand and Stars has a deceptively whimsical premise that takes several fascinating and intense twists through Jack's psyche and loyalties. From [livejournal.com profile] whimsicalwhims, SG-1, Jack/Daniel, rated PG-13, worksafe.

Dark Jack/Daniel from thevetia, and fabulously, psychologically dark. What they need and what they can (and can't) give. In Common, SG-1, Jack/Daniel, NC-17, not worksafe.

John/Rodney in the Nantucket AU I started reading onceupona, and it's always comforting like a mug of hot tea to go back there. This is the one where their jobs have nothing to do with anything, but they met and fell in love over a house. This is a Christmas story: Infuriating Bastard, by [livejournal.com profile] sheafrotherdon. Fits, doesn't it? SGA, AU, John/Rodney, worksafe.

While we're in AUs...

You know, I always wonder about starting a rec with 'this isn't usually anything I'm drawn to, but...' and my hesitancy has very little to do with my own poor grammar. Nevertheless, I read this on a rec that contained the sentence 'Listen, John as a robot is not normally a kink of mine,' (or something to that effect) so I shall as well.

John as a robot generally feels like the kind of story that might be described, perhaps, as a PWP. Definitely a decidedly different AU, right? May no! Not this one, this is plotty and intricate and well planned and well executed and well written and it Stayed With Me. It stayed with me, and it kept me thinking, which I generally associate with some of the more creative and unique ideas and stories I've read in fandom. It's worth your time, just enjoy that excruciating awkwardness with Rodney there at the beginning, you know it's fun to watch him be awkward. The Soul and the Company Store Remix, from Leah, at [livejournal.com profile] leahwoof (there are apparently more remixes of other stories, and I'm not sure which is the original, but go read this one anyway, it's worth your time and long and plotty besides.) SGA, John/Rodney, AU, R rated.

Back to Jack and Daniel (ooooh, is that not luxurious and yummy?) [livejournal.com profile] tafkarfanfic wrote a grand funny romp through a number of alternated universes when Jack and Daniel have something go amiss with a gate trip home. Good for what ails ya. Another Fine Universe You've Gotten Us Into, PG, Jack/Daniel, worksafe, SG-1.

And SGA: One Piece at a Time is parallel-play-as-courting, and sweet, and gentle, and adorable. Ronon and Teyla are wonderful, S4 setting. From [livejournal.com profile] argosy, SGA, John/Rodney, PG.

Oh, this is a fabulous Cameron piece from [livejournal.com profile] helens78, written originally for [livejournal.com profile] sg1_five_things, but way longer than a single comment. The Bright and Hollow Sky takes Cameron to the breaking point in five different ways, some slash, some gen, some AU, some het, but all beautiful achy falling apart.

Sam/Jack from [livejournal.com profile] synecdochic that is cathartic in the ways it lets Sam pull no punches. She's wonderful, she's insistent, and she's doing it marvelously right. Part of the Broken Wings series (which, yes, I have an unholy love for that story) which gives the background of Jack's clone to this story, set in late seasons or so. This is only Jack and Sam, though, unless you count the ghosts in the room, and I'd recommend reading whether or not you've been following the whole series. Carthango Delenda Est. Jack/Sam (Go Sam!), SG-1, worksafe.

And finally, an elegant early seasons Jack and Daniel story. Friendship, important, and one of those conversations that none of the others could have had with Jack at that point. From Dira Sudis ([livejournal.com profile] dsudis), Untitled Ficlet, SG-1, S2, gen, worksafe.

Caught up! Go read something!

(also, props and thanks to all the reccers who pointed me to these fabulous stories. I can't, off the top of my head, claim I found many without being pointed there, this time around. Y'all weren't wrong, that's all I can say. Good stuff.)

Wow; I'm simply astonished you hadn't read "In Common" yet. It's one of my all-time favorite SG-1 stories, because it has so few answers. So painful and real-seeming in its complete lack of heroism and pat resolution.

Also, yay for having a life! Go, you!

It's just lovely. I really suspect that I haven't seen it before, or at least hadn't really *noticed* it before. I mean, I've read through all of Keiko Kirin's stuff too, but every once in a while something surprises me and feels totally new.

It's funny how many different paths you can take to the same place, though.

Life is craaaaaaazy, omg. I may have to polish up my old lurker badge if I'm only going to post once every two weeks, dude.

i heart that fic so much. most people who rec her rec "To Drive the Cold Winter Away," which is technically gorgeous and I read to the end, but that Jack is not My Jack.

The Jack and Daniel of "In Common", though? I can so believe in them. In this angsty heart piercing way.

*cheers*
