Year in Fanfic-- annual fic round-up meme.

I've been writing fanfic for three years now, apparently (last year's fic roundup is here, the year previous is here. That's quite something, folks. You'll find all of it under the fanfic tag, anything bigger than a commentfic in the sidebar at left, and in this post.

Written in 2006 (I didn't write as much as in former years, I suspect due to a lot of traveling, moving and starting a new job. Other than that, I have no excuse) also titled: my attempts at playing with structure, let me show you them.

[ETA: I completely forgot this fic, probably because it was finished before 2007 began, but the reveal for the 3_ships ficathon wasn't until after. I got some feedback on the story today, though, and rereading it, it's not that bad, really. Foodporn and threesomes, how can you go wrong, really? Syncope, Cam/Vala/Sam pre-ship, S10, worksafe, but you'll crave cranberry sauce. The real stuff.]

Take Your Coffee Black Jack and Daniel, S7 descension ficlet, worksafe.

Desert Made of Glass, Jack/Daniel, S10 (Line in the Sand), R rated, for [livejournal.com profile] raqs. Structure game #1.

Teyla/Kate commentfic for lilyayl, SGA, Teyla/Kate, possibly inappropriate vague references to phallically shaped vegetables, PG-13, S3ish.

Five Things Teal'c Learned in Fifty Years, but Will Never Speak Of. Teal'c (/Cameron/Sam), spoilers for the finale, S10 Unending, PG-13. Structure game 2 = Five Things fic.

All the Infections that the Sun Sucks Up. for the [livejournal.com profile] gateverse_remix (and [livejournal.com profile] dirty_diana). John, Jack, Sam and Rodney, spoilers for S5's Absolute Power, and the AU Diana ran with. Crossover with Atlantis. I felt obligated to give a lot of oblique warnings with this one. PG-13, worksafe.

...and DVD outtake of a Rodney/Martouf scene.

...and ETA: a commentfic for Rydra that I forgot about, same 'verse, Selmak ficlet, and Jacob and Martouf and Lantesh.

My first time playing in the Five Things community, and I fail at math: Three Memorable Trips to the Infirmary. It did get me writing, though I'm kind of stunned at the lack of Janet in those so far. I retain hope for the other two thingses to occur to me at some point.

And the one I just posted: Run for the [livejournal.com profile] reel_sg1 challenge, incorporating the themes of Run, Lola, Run. Teal'c and Daniel, S7's Avatar, PG-13. Structure 3 = cyclic.

Story I'm proudest of: Possibly Desert Made of Glass. That was one where I did play with structure, and with a lot of different, subtle elements going on at the same time. I think it walked the line between confusing and effective pretty well. I don't know, though, because I adore the Teal'c fic, and I'm so proud of All the Infections too.

Story most under-appreciated by the universe: There's something about ficathons and not getting the same kind of feedback high that you do in your own LJ--I love All the Infections, and with the caveat that I'm not begging for f/b in any sense, it didn't get the response I'd expected. Maybe it wasn't as visible or something. Or maybe it was the SGA crossover aspect (but really, it's an Absolute Power fic, so... ?)

ETA2: Story I'm most likely to forget about having written, though I shouldn't have, because it's better than I remember: Syncope (see above). I do have mixed memories of writing this, particularly as I was just coming off the dark_gate threesome fic (which I *adore*, but it sucked out my brain). I'm really pleased how well Syncope stands on it's own, though, for sensory stuff and simplicity and swirly non-verbal conversation. It's an unusual story for me, I think.

ETA3: runner up for forgotten story goes to the Selmak commentfic for Rydra! Yay!

Story I wrote that I never thought I'd write: Teal'c surprised the hell out of me with his Five Things Learned in Fifty Years finale story. I started writing that with no idea it would end up as cool as it did. And I rarely write tags to episodes (unless RW makes me).

Most fun stories to write: All the Infections that the Sun Sucks Up. I loved living in that 'verse for a while, and that's the story that I most successfully inhabited while writing: I knew the names of secondary and tertiary characters barely mentioned in the story. I knew what all the major players were doing at any given time, whether they were featured prominently in the story at that point or not. I had all the characters clambering for a chance at holding the POV, and I'm pleased with how the one's who did tell the story went about it.

Least fun stories to write: Run, the [livejournal.com profile] reel_sg1 story, took forever to write--and not because I didn't know the story or didn't like the story, the stars just didn't align to give me energy and time and focus to sit down and narrate. The other story I have in editing right now is suffering the same fate. It's been like pulling teeth to write much since this summer.

Special award: Goes to me for writing one Five Things, one Three Things, one crazy chronology, one remix and a cyclic, repeating structure.

Some favorite bits which turned out to be giant swaths of scenes:

Run: She picked up after two rings. “Sam,” he said, “you’ve got the anti-supersoldier weapon, right? Haven’t taken it apart or anything?”

“Hi Daniel, I was going to work on the power source later, but haven’t started yet.” That boded ill for future loops, Daniel thought. “What’s up?”

At least he caught her in a good mood this time, for the moment. “Well, Teal’c and I are in a virtual simulation of a battle situation in which a supersoldier has entered the base, you are a virtual character, Jack has gone AWOL on a bike, probably, (Harriman was just going to call you) and I really, really need to you to take the anti-supersoldier weapon to Teal’c outside the gateroom now.” He heard the tell-tale chime of the elevator arriving and stretched, trying to get a foot in the door to hold it while he explained to Sam.

“Okay,” Sam said through the receiver, “I’m on my way.”

All the Infections That the Sun Sucks Up:Carter cuts a wide curve around the trunk of a hollowed out tree bleeding small bees against gravity. She sometimes turns at the first buzz in her ear, she sometimes walks half a mile past before turning; it's important not to cut a path too easy to follow. Daniel was no tracker, but God knows they'd all learned from Teal'c over the years. Before.

Before she started to hate Daniel. Before he destroyed them then set his sights on the world. Or maybe it was the other way around, but it's been a long time since Sam had looked beyond Earth's borders.

She stands under the edge of the bee tree's canopy and watches the lower horizon line partially reveal stars as the sun falls and the light pollution comes up. Daddy, she thinks, the light buzz in her ear coming and going like she's standing next to a highway. Then turns a little to the North and looks towards Colorado Springs. She's heard cryptic rumors that suggested Jack is back there. It could have meant someone else, but she thinks she still knows Daniel well enough for government work, and she's pretty sure it would only ever be Jack.

She wants to be angry with them all, to rail against the stars with some pithy, meaningful question. Why Teal'c let himself die, why her father isn't sweeping in to save her, why Jack isn't ordering them into some heroic stunt at the last minute that worked in defiance of reason. Why Daniel did anything. She isn't sure who to hate most, though, and she isn't sure it's anger she feels.

Five Things Teal'c Learned in Fifty Years, but Will Never Speak OfEvery Jaffa knows how to wait, to endure, to withstand a confinement, regardless of the torture it brings. Teal'c believed these to be qualities of character, of honor, of duty and obligation. He did not know how to respect an impatient mind except to tolerate it as one would a small child.

Teal'c had long believed that he knew all he needed to know of slavery and confinement. Of the Goa'uld and the havoc they wreaked. In Vala’s company he began to understand for the first time how narrow his understanding was.
.

Desert Made of Glass: In the distance, Daniel heard sounds from the women's tent on Abydos; the sound of many women talking at once, when no men were present. Chatter carried on the wind, over the sands. The sound was wrong, it echoed in a large room.

Story in progress that will SOMEDAY see the light of day: Mosaicity, a story of geology, history, friendship and Sam and Teal'c.

snippet:She wasn’t sure when Teal’c’s gold tattoo had become so commonplace, but she resented the grey hair upstaging it. “Colonel Carter, I believe this place may hold more substantial interest,” he said, and Sam abruptly realized he was looking at her, “In times past, the Goa’uld created temporary settlements near volatile places to mine data crystals.”

“Really?” Sam asked, her voice a little too loud. She wasn’t sure weather to stand and shake Teal’c as if to verify the truth of the words or to turn around and press her nose to the computer monitor to get information from the MALP faster.

Yay playing this structure! It's fun, isn't it? If sometimes it makes you want to hit yourself upside the head.

I've SEEN this one! *dances the dance of the privileged few*
And it is very much of the awesome.

(oh, and in case you didn't notice, I posted the Daniel & Bra'tac commentfic for you a few days ago - but my journal's been getting deleted for swaths of time while I eliminate avenues of procrastination from grad school apps so I wouldn't be surprised if you missed it)

Is that a beta dance? Huh.

Turns out I had your prompt responses (or at least your journal) open in another tag, probably for days, but because you deleted at some point, the tag led nowhere. *is sad*

But then you told me the journal was undeleted and the prompts had been written! *is happy*

And then I read Daniel talking to Bra'tac, and I was happy. Notice my happy Bra'tac icon for you. *icons*

It IS a beta dance! A very excited beta dance because YAY Sam and Teal'c and you!

hee :) Yeah, sorry about that, and it's probably going for another day-long delete in about an hour. I'm kinda...being ruthless in forcing my brain to actually focus on these darn apps.

Yay Bra'tac! He is one of many characters I need to iconify.
