I am not in California right now. I actually live in the Central Coast, and as such, my city is North of the Santa Ana winds generally, but I hear there is lots of ash raining down, lots of coughing, and some worry. We'll be on the edge of the danger zone for most of these fires, I expect.

I'm worried. I hope everyone is alright. Please do check in if you live points South of where I live.

It's ironic that today I was cleaning up my parent's acreage, which involves chainsawing broken limbs into firewood (that we give away, lacking a woodburning fireplace) and burning yard debris in a 3-4 foot high bonfire that is still burning at 9:30 PM.

I also did a little beta-ing, and can I just say that I cannot wait for you all to see that story when it's finished. I consider it one of the highlights of my fannish existance that I've been involved in it as much as I have.

(another highlight, if you're interested, was giving the incredibly evilly detailed prompt that resulted in paian's Palimpsest --and, redemptively, the nice, not evil prompt that resulted in The Joy That You Find Here You've Borrowed. I don't know why she keeps accepting prompts from me, except that I don't think she knew the last was mine.)

Anyway, that story is just going to knock you all flat, is all I'm saying. I've not seen anything like it in Stargate Fanfiction, with one, maybe two exceptions. Don't hold your breath about it until it's farther than a first draft, though, if you want to be pragmatic about your anticipation.

Right, I have a story I'm meant to be working on, and today I added, like, 100 words. And then lost it when Word had a tempertantrum and refused to speak to me. Nevertheless, I am determined. I post a wordcounterthing!

The Teal'c and Daniel Story I'm Working On! That is horrendously late! And the reason I'm not signing up for sg1_jubilee until it's turned in!

AU of a multifold variety: you'll probably want to be up on the rather fabulous AU character of Daniel that they have created for another story, where Daniel is female, right? Then put *both* Daniel and Dani into a modern Egypt the Goa'uld never influenced and watch how they deal with Jack in the rules and restrictions of that society. It's a fascinating exercise, if you made it past my clumsy intro. Worksafe.

Post Rock by basingstroke, Brokeback Mountain, slash, worksafe. Future story, and lovely.

Lightning Fast and All Alone by vaznetti Highlander/Supernatural crossover, Duncan and John. And really, I know next to nothing about Highlander, but I read it when I saw that it was John there, because SERIOUSLY. It's when the boys were young. Worksafe.

Callus by laytoncolt, SGA wonderfully creepy gen/Bob/side of slash but wait until the reveal, seriously. Worksafe.

eighteenish by seperis, it's SGA, it's slash, it's almost crack, except that it is actually quite plausibly serious. And not just because this is the penguin fandom. Not worksafe, iirc.

Commentary on Komos' Hold the Darkness and Stay the Night by avidrosette, a rather extraordinary commentary on an extraordinary story. I learn so much from these commentaries sometimes, but this is notable for being so informative about a story someone else wrote.

Actually, rydra_wong had a nice commentary on ana_grrl's extraordinary Men of Action, also. Those are Cam/Teal'c, SG-1, apocafic and slash. And fantastic. I really do highly recommend them.

A Bright Particular Star by flambeau. HP, slash (Remus/Sirius, just before graduation) R rated. For the record, the news about Dumbledore? Bully for him, but it's Remus/Sirius I'm likely to read.

Not a Love Song in mcshep_match. Sheppard/McKay with a happy ending. NC-17 and a pick-me-up.

Take These Broken Wings 8 by synecdochic. Cameron/clone!Jack, SG-1, AU in which Cameron was really that hurt, and Jack's clone didn't just fall off the face of the Earth. It is a continuing WIP, but bloody *fantastic*. Slash, and frequently not worksafe.

Old Country by astolat. SPN/HP crossover in which Sam and Dean come into odd inheritance and get lifted straight into Hogwarts, post-books. Wincest, but really, that's the least of the leaps needed. Wonderfully imaginative and a great read. Spoilers for the end of S2, for Supernatural. Long and not worksafe, don't think, but not til the end bits.

This Mountain in the Wind by splash_the_cat in choc_fic. Jack/Teal'c, SG-1, PG and wonderful.

A Few Nice Things by princessofg. Daniel/Jack, SG-1, short and sweet. And not worksafe.

Honestly, it's hard to live there and not see how little water exists naturally. It's all been shipped in, borrowed or somesuch.

Sometimes I wonder if there is, you know, a *reason* people don't live our lifestyles in deserts. I remember in Kenya, thinking that Nairobi, with all it's Western comforts, was absolutely destroying the land there; where the native way of moving around and shifting the village, was so much more symbiotic.

I really love the smell of woodsmoke; I hate that it brings such negative connotations in the dry lands.

Very good points. What you've said reminds me of that Paul Simon song "American Tune". We've lived so well so long, and perhaps we have a sense of invulnerability in regards to the environment that recent events is eroding?
