I am not in California right now. I actually live in the Central Coast, and as such, my city is North of the Santa Ana winds generally, but I hear there is lots of ash raining down, lots of coughing, and some worry. We'll be on the edge of the danger zone for most of these fires, I expect.

I'm worried. I hope everyone is alright. Please do check in if you live points South of where I live.

It's ironic that today I was cleaning up my parent's acreage, which involves chainsawing broken limbs into firewood (that we give away, lacking a woodburning fireplace) and burning yard debris in a 3-4 foot high bonfire that is still burning at 9:30 PM.

I also did a little beta-ing, and can I just say that I cannot wait for you all to see that story when it's finished. I consider it one of the highlights of my fannish existance that I've been involved in it as much as I have.

(another highlight, if you're interested, was giving the incredibly evilly detailed prompt that resulted in [livejournal.com profile] paian's Palimpsest --and, redemptively, the nice, not evil prompt that resulted in The Joy That You Find Here You've Borrowed. I don't know why she keeps accepting prompts from me, except that I don't think she knew the last was mine.)

Anyway, that story is just going to knock you all flat, is all I'm saying. I've not seen anything like it in Stargate Fanfiction, with one, maybe two exceptions. Don't hold your breath about it until it's farther than a first draft, though, if you want to be pragmatic about your anticipation.

Right, I have a story I'm meant to be working on, and today I added, like, 100 words. And then lost it when Word had a tempertantrum and refused to speak to me. Nevertheless, I am determined. I post a wordcounterthing!

The Teal'c and Daniel Story I'm Working On! That is horrendously late! And the reason I'm not signing up for [livejournal.com profile] sg1_jubilee until it's turned in!

And now, 30 recommendations (Stargates SG-1 and Atlantis, Brokeback Mountain, Dark Angel, Firefly, Supernatural, Harry Potter and Highlander):

Mirage by [livejournal.com profile] synecdochic and [livejournal.com profile] ivorygates. AU of a multifold variety: you'll probably want to be up on the rather fabulous AU character of Daniel that they have created for another story, where Daniel is female, right? Then put *both* Daniel and Dani into a modern Egypt the Goa'uld never influenced and watch how they deal with Jack in the rules and restrictions of that society. It's a fascinating exercise, if you made it past my clumsy intro. Worksafe.

Post Rock by [livejournal.com profile] basingstroke, Brokeback Mountain, slash, worksafe. Future story, and lovely.

Lightning Fast and All Alone by [livejournal.com profile] vaznetti Highlander/Supernatural crossover, Duncan and John. And really, I know next to nothing about Highlander, but I read it when I saw that it was John there, because SERIOUSLY. It's when the boys were young. Worksafe.

Callus by [livejournal.com profile] laytoncolt, SGA wonderfully creepy gen/Bob/side of slash but wait until the reveal, seriously. Worksafe.

eighteenish by [livejournal.com profile] seperis, it's SGA, it's slash, it's almost crack, except that it is actually quite plausibly serious. And not just because this is the penguin fandom. Not worksafe, iirc.

After the Drought by [livejournal.com profile] monanotlisa, SGA, slash, worksafe, sweet and happymaking.

Where We Ought to Be by Wojelah. SGA, slash, spoilers for Sunday and post-ep for that episode.

Commentary on Komos' Hold the Darkness and Stay the Night by [livejournal.com profile] avidrosette, a rather extraordinary commentary on an extraordinary story. I learn so much from these commentaries sometimes, but this is notable for being so informative about a story someone else wrote.

Actually, [livejournal.com profile] rydra_wong had a nice commentary on [livejournal.com profile] ana_grrl's extraordinary Men of Action, also. Those are Cam/Teal'c, SG-1, apocafic and slash. And fantastic. I really do highly recommend them.

Five nightmares/memories Sam still experiences with PTSD-like intensity by [livejournal.com profile] splash_the_cat. SG-1, Sam, fantastic draw on this woman, as always. Worksafe.

The Bullet Struck Hard, But I Do Not Bleed by [livejournal.com profile] abyssinia4077 Daniel and Teal'c, and one of the stories I read when I get stuck on mine now.

The Protection Racket by [livejournal.com profile] kormantic, McKay/Sheppard, NC-17, SGA.

Counting to 10 in Other Galaxies by [livejournal.com profile] sardonicsmiley, SGA/SPN, in the sense that the two guys from Supernatural are lifted out of their show and placed into SGA, complete with military vs. science, gate teams and the like. Only not related, so slash, but not exactly Wincest, you follow me? Good yarn, R rated, slash.

Lovely [livejournal.com profile] paian: A Dark Caprice. Jack/Daniel, SG-1, post-ep for Lost City. Here's another if you're looking for Not-Lost-City fic: After Nicaragua, post-Evolution, and also Jack/Daniel and not worksafe.

Stop the Presses by [livejournal.com profile] cofax7, an imaginative use of structure, original characters and sarcasm to poke fun at both the Gate'verse and it's ridiculous cover stories. Wonderfully original, as always. Worksafe.

It's a Nice Day by [livejournal.com profile] minkmix, gen, Dark Angel stuff that rings true to the best that Dark Angel almost was...

Earthbound by [livejournal.com profile] svendra. Teal'c, SG-1, AU, and just one of the neatest ideas ever. Teal'c, Bounty Hunter. The big guy would be happy, with all his private investigator aspirations.

A Bright Particular Star by [livejournal.com profile] flambeau. HP, slash (Remus/Sirius, just before graduation) R rated. For the record, the news about Dumbledore? Bully for him, but it's Remus/Sirius I'm likely to read.

Not a Love Song in [livejournal.com profile] mcshep_match. Sheppard/McKay with a happy ending. NC-17 and a pick-me-up.

And, just to bracket: from team angst in the same community: Invisible Prisoner. Angsty, slash, het, not worksafe.

From Ashes to Honey by [livejournal.com profile] paian for [livejournal.com profile] rowan_d in the Sam/Daniel ficathon. Sam/Daniel, SG-1, worksafe.

Written by the Victors by [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza. het and slash, SGA, really amazing story.

Take These Broken Wings 8 by [livejournal.com profile] synecdochic. Cameron/clone!Jack, SG-1, AU in which Cameron was really that hurt, and Jack's clone didn't just fall off the face of the Earth. It is a continuing WIP, but bloody *fantastic*. Slash, and frequently not worksafe.

Old Country by [livejournal.com profile] astolat. SPN/HP crossover in which Sam and Dean come into odd inheritance and get lifted straight into Hogwarts, post-books. Wincest, but really, that's the least of the leaps needed. Wonderfully imaginative and a great read. Spoilers for the end of S2, for Supernatural. Long and not worksafe, don't think, but not til the end bits.

This Mountain in the Wind by [livejournal.com profile] splash_the_cat in [livejournal.com profile] choc_fic. Jack/Teal'c, SG-1, PG and wonderful.

A Few Nice Things by [livejournal.com profile] princessofg. Daniel/Jack, SG-1, short and sweet. And not worksafe.

The Bottom Line by [livejournal.com profile] runpunkrun. McKay/Sheppard, SGA, funny as hell. AMTDI, not worksafe at all.

Harsher and Kinder, Both by [livejournal.com profile] idyll. Simon/Ronon, SGA/Firefly crossover, AU, R-rated.

And lastly, before I drop: [livejournal.com profile] katie_m's poly/apocafic Wandering Blind 'verse: tag for Wandering Blind effectively J/D amidst J/D/S, and so sweet. Not worksafe.

I'm out! I'm done! Remind me not to get so backed up again, yeah?

Watching the fires on the news right now, the whole thing is so awful.

*hugs* and travel safely.

Honestly, it's hard to live there and not see how little water exists naturally. It's all been shipped in, borrowed or somesuch.

Sometimes I wonder if there is, you know, a *reason* people don't live our lifestyles in deserts. I remember in Kenya, thinking that Nairobi, with all it's Western comforts, was absolutely destroying the land there; where the native way of moving around and shifting the village, was so much more symbiotic.

I really love the smell of woodsmoke; I hate that it brings such negative connotations in the dry lands.

Very good points. What you've said reminds me of that Paul Simon song "American Tune". We've lived so well so long, and perhaps we have a sense of invulnerability in regards to the environment that recent events is eroding?

Actually, rydra_wong had a nice commentary on ana_grrl's extraordinary Men of Action, one time. Was that also in the dvd_commentary community, or some other thing? Because I can't find it.

Ta-da.

The Bullet Struck Hard, But I Do Not Bleed by abyssinia4077 Daniel and Teal'c, and one of the stories I read when I get stuck on mine now.

So many recs -- thank you! And I'm thrilled to hear that the two apocafics were high points. Had no idea the 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams' prompt was yours, but I was so glad when I found out. It was an awesome prompt, and no surprise there, especially after reading your prompt-y quotedump. Lots of great stuff in that list.
