Well, good people...
Jul. 2nd, 2007 02:45 pmThank you for all the happy birthdayses. I had a brilliant weekend, plan to extend the celebrations through the fourth of July at least and am generally enjoying my thirties like gangbusters. I flipped through a couple of pages of my flist last night before going to bed and thanked everyone I saw for all the copious love and good will, but I'm afraid I missed posts due to the copious remixes and Dr. Who squeeing, so: THANK YOU. Brilliant birthday, wonderful people, present company included. Thank you so much.
And the balloons and tissues (send more!)-- how thoughtful! How funny! How, um, contradictory? Unless it's the laugh-till-you-cry tissues, because I got close at one point to weeping with laughter Saturday night. (Thanks
ivorygates and
kellifer_fic--they make the place so homey and festive.)
AND FIC! Teal'c fic! Teal'c being intimidated in a funny way fic! Thank you
teand, for Proceed With Caution, (worksafe.) And thank you delphia2000 for the gentle and insightful Questionable Fic (worksafe, finalefic). There is nothing like a story for a birthday present.
CAKE FOR EVERYONE! No, seriously, the weight can't be controlled like it could when I was 20, you people need to help me eat all this.
So the
gateverse_remix fic were posted yesterday, and now I can tell you that I wrote All the Infections that the Sun Sucks Up (the waste your breath remix). This is a remix of the incredible
dirty_diana's classic Absolute Power AU East of Eden. I don't know what possessed me to aim so high, but it was the only story I really considered while remixing (though I've read all of d's work. Seriously. All of it. It's incredible stuff.)
East of Eden is Jack/Daniel, dark and angsty and edgy and wonderful with Atlantis people creeping in (naturally, since they would have been in the service and not on the other side of the galaxy in an Absolute Power AU.) My remix is the back of the canvas players moving the plot and the stories and their own damnation or redemption or whatever (omg I'm channeling John again.) I loved writing this story. I loved Sam and Rodney and John. I tried so hard to write Martouf into it. I couldn't manage to get Martouf in there, though I have an outtake if you're interested, before I realized this was not Rodney's story and it worked better with Jacob in Martouf's role--and also that Sam and Rodney hadn't yet met OMG (I was reverse jossed by canon!)
So anyway, please to read my story if you're at all interested. I'm worried about it being lonely over there posted at the remix community and not here.
But while we're on the subject of my stories, I got remixed by
katie_m, people. Katie. M. I have so much respect for this girl I can't even tell you; she's just that wicked smart. She also picked one of my favorite sweet little friendship stories (Perchance to Dream) between Teal'c and Sam and remixed it from Sam's POV. I love how the tone changes to reflect Sam's logic and progression from the original story's Teal'c. I love the details she filled in, and I am currently terribly fond of Teal'c and Sam together, so it was an incredible thing for me, as well as a wonderful story in it's own right. To Thine Own Self Be True (the protesting lady remix) is worksafe.
Now, I haven't had huge amounts of time to be reading these stories, but there are a few that I feel you should really, really know about (
kormantic has a much more comprehensive rec's list going on her LJ, btw.) Caveat lector that I have read them mostly because I beta'd them, but one or two I read last night.
So, the lovely
rydra_wong once again went to a more foreign world, more incredibly realized cultures, with some of the most incredible lyric storytelling I've seen. There are occasions where an alien world is built fantastically enough that you believe it, but this one I could imagine living in. Moving into a spare closet in a little old lady's house and trading cooking chores for stories. Son of Endless Sky (the Bone Needle Remix), PG-13, SG-1 Jack and Daniel, some question/suggestion of relationship, but worksafe.
I was also beta for
ivorygates, who remixed
surrealphantast's ficlet of Jack/Cameron-not-Sam angst and told an incredible other side to an incredibly layered story to begin with. I have always had a soft spot for dangerous!blackops!Jack, and this is him at his most dangerous, treating allies like potential enemies. I also love Cameron when he is deceptively rolling with it, but secretly perfectly competent. Cam actually gains strength in the remix, which is a really interesting turn, since the remix takes Jack's POV. These stories work particularly well as a duo, methinks. Grand Illusion, a remix of Mirage, not so much worksafe. Slash with a side order of jealousy.
Now this one rocked my socks. I didn't beta it, just to establish the bounds of the caveat, but that's neither here nor there. This is TEAL'C (you know how I love him) and the original team treading on the edge of Teal'c's past. I love the detail of memory Teal'c obviously retains, his need to make amends, and his awareness of the karmic payback that he's already paid. I adore wildly
cofax7's use of scribes and historical documents to edge the story with facts Teal'c won't utter, and I love how what he does say along with all the other information hints at (possibly one of a million) destructive tragedies that Teal'c bears responsibility for. There is no flaw in voice or in character, and yet Cofax circles around
beatrix_otter's story with moments between and it's just amazing. Team, Teal'c, PG, worksafe. None But Ourselves (the Redemption Song remix). This is a remix of
beatrix_otter's
tealc_ficathon piece Pale Battalions, also fascinating for how affected Teal'c is in the moments after the battle.
I was bounced with this one, but it is one of the more incredible stream of consciousness fics I've ever, um, seen (though now I can't remember if I've ever seen one before.) Seriously, though,
synecdochic +
paian is a partnership to be reckoned with, and Syne took a large step out of her normal writing tone to take Jack through stasis, through that vulnerability and longing, and it's a heartbreaking remix of paian's incredible Rounded With a Sleep.(R rated, slash). The Under The Ice And Dreaming Remix. PG-13 for slash and language and suggestion.
I have so much to read, and so little time. Silly RL, providing me with so much happy distraction! What a lovely conundrum. I have the morning of the fourth set aside for one impressive list of stories to read, though. Yum.

Date: 2007-07-05 06:14 am (UTC)My Mom always said she went happily into her 30s but had to take a big gulp to deal with 40. I was only two when she turned 30, though, so I can't really compare it to anything. :) May the 40s improve with age. If it makes you feel better, both my parents have regressed to having huge amounts of fun in their 50s and 60s, so it just gets better and better!
