fic recs, fic recs, roley-poley fic recs.
Dec. 18th, 2006 11:44 amWonky wind and ice and storms mean for no internets and too many car accidents. I can, however, report that I and mine are well, and that
kres is lovely and when I left her she had most of a six pack of really good beer left. So she's probably just fine, if you haven't heard from her yet. She's also rather adorable. Worth the multi-hour drive to welcome properly (and her sweetie too). You know, I've never failed to spend four hours chatting with fandom people I meet, even on first meeting. That's just brilliant in general, but in this case, not a word about fandom or scifi was uttered, which is pretty darn cool. Makes me glad it was a snow day and I got to meet the sweetie of Kres, even though it meant they were without power, or heat, or internets, or phone... *waves Northward*
Anyway, back to fandom, because we all know this is a fandomonly mostly journal.
SG-1:
sage_theory's 12 days of Christmas fic opened with a yummy little Cam/Daniel that acknowledges a nice backstory of Jack/Daniel. Fabulous contrast of the effect of Jack's memory with Cameron's present influence. Snowbounding, PG-13, worksafe.
side note:
raqs is very sad and thinks there's no Jack/Daniel being written now! Imagine! Jane and I have vowed to remedy the sad!raqs situation as best we may by vowing to band together in smuttly unity! Join us, won't you? Smuttly Unity is a great name for a band, after all.
In a hetly sort of way, the
rare_pairings ficathon gives us (I haven't read them all yet. Storms here made for wonky power and fun visits to the marvelous and adorable
kres + hubby. I left them still without power, but with lots of beer and cookies. They'll prolly be okay.) (But we might think of sending more cookies eventually.)
rydra_wong's fantastic could-have-been-for-the-dark-ficathon Cameron/Sam, all based in canon, marvelously, and so desperate. And Not Expecting Pardon, Not Worksafe.
sjhw_tolerance also wrote a Rodney/Teyla piece that caught my eye, set during S3's McKay and Mrs. Miller. Say Uncle has a nice wonder to their relationship. NC-17.
kellifer_fic wrote wrote The Long Pause Between for the ficathon (great Sam and Cameron coping, dealing and worrying) then turned around and gave us How Being on SG-1 is Not All Space Babes and High Adventure (again, with the excellent Cam voice, only also short scenes that tell of a powerful arc.) I am aflail. They are both worksafe.
SGA:
Teyla fic! Whee! This is from
liviapenn for
alizarin_nyc in a pinch hit for the teylaficathon last year, and it features a fairly brilliant Teyla voice; considering all sorts of reasons the Earth types do what they do and ruling them out as she gets to know them better. Such a smart woman, and a completely different point of reference, and a wonderful matter-of-fact proposition of John, too. First Contact, Teyla/John, Rodney, Season 1, not worksafe.
Plethora of AUs I've been reading that seem to feature John/Rodney and some plot to a movie or romance novel as inspiration. I can't explain it, but these fics are good despite the wierd introduction. And the fact that usually, me and AUs go together like steak and marshmallow fluff (I'm the marshmallow).
toomuchplor wrote, with inspiration from the film 'Never Been Kissed', John as a college professor and Rodney going undercover as a Botany Master's student to suss out whether the Atlantis project should recruit him. The Theory of Acquired Characters has a nice build up of attraction along with the always entertaining Rodney trying to edit his tirades. John is characteristically hedgey about his past and Ronon is hilarious as Rodney's backup on campus. NC-17, for the underthemisteltoe challenge.
In a similar vein,
pentapus wrote John on medical leave and stumbling into the path of Rodney on a mission. The romance novel inspiration for the fic comes from Rodney trying to track down a mathematics author using a character from a raunchy romance novel as a pen name. I Believe in Wishful Thinking, worksafe, for
reel_sga (I totally underestimated that challenge) with the prompt 'Theodora Goes Wild'.
Now this one, there's just no excuse for. Apparently
cesperanza, some time back, challenged people to write inappropriate elves into a fic as a result of fandom's observation of JF's rather pointy ears.
skooziepants, who will always deal you the very best crack, wrote a fairytale AU with Rodney as the fairy godmother, Radek, Ronon, Elizabeth and Teyla making notable appearances, and John the rather contrary object of their affections. He would be exasperating, but it's interesting in what ways he manages to be. Whatever You Wish For takes entertaining turns through a number of fairytales.
And here's a little more traditional AU, in which John is not what he seems, and all his odd behavior is explained, and Rodney was always the hardest to fool. Gods That Slumber, by
laytoncolt, is one of those redesigns that make you love canon wierdness for inspiring fic like this. PG-13, McKay/Sheppard.
Anyway, back to fandom, because we all know this is a fandom
