coupla recs, coupla thoughts
Jul. 27th, 2006 06:55 pmIn looking for a free plug in for Greek fonts in Photoshop (how's a girl supposed to make physics figures without Greek letters, huh? I ask you) I came across this little tidbit of information:
The word Sepia is Greek for cuttlefish (relatives of the squid), and Sepia is the reddish brown pigment derived from the ink.
Did you know that? I did not know that. Sepia means cuttlefish? Okay.
I found Greek-ish (enough, but why y for gamma?) fonts, btw. Which I've now d/l'd and installed, but it's triggered this plot bunny about Daniel getting audited for d/l porn and maybe it was just font plug ins for the new languages he's discovering and aren't automatically installed on his word processing program. Or, you know, maybe it was porn and he's just saying it was fonts. No, not writing it. I told you the punchline, that's as far as I intend to go.
In between typing up massive amounts of methods pages (ah, physics, how I love thee waaaaay more than biology. Way. More.) I have done the following:
Read
cofax7's newest contribution to the This Is Not Wartime series: The first time Cam met John Sheppard. That's nothing but goodness, right there. Also gen, and PG-13 or something.
Then I went and read more TINW, and found out that I'm not so much in an apocafic place, which is not to say that I got sad, Cofax, so much as it was just way beyond my ability to process (although I do keep hearing the phrase 'mid-way through the first pint, the mountain blew up' repeating over and over in my head. I don't even know if I've got the syntax right or not at this point.)
thassalia is responding to prompts, which means I wrote her one three, because I am all about the prompting, and she, quite rightfully, ignored all of the prompts and wrote the setting requested. It's a beautiful ficlet, what she wrote. Really, amazing Cameron voice and character: Blue Jeans and Beer, and Zebulan Pike was Here (for me yay!). S10 goodness, all about the Cameron. All about Cameron going back to his old stomping grounds and faith and humilty and *handflaps* Gen, fantabulous.
Then there's
paian, who was poked into posting just one more Lost City fic, and this is such beautiful old married love, Jack confident in his feelings, Daniel confident with his words. All In, adult, Jack/Daniel, gorgeous.
ltlj wrote a pretty little John/Teyla thing: Sojourn, NC-17, SGA.
seperis wrote in her quantum mirror universe (Rodney who had a thing with an academic John comes to our 'verse where McKay dies and Sheppard is straight), Corner, in which Rodney's people management skills are lacking somewhat. Gen, PG-13.
Really intrigued by this five things store from oxoniensis, even though I know barely anything about Supernatural, except that Sam and Dean are brothers, which should have put me off, really, but didn't. Five Stages, Sam/Dean, NC-17.
ETA: Home Fires Burning by
shusu. John/Rodney, NC-17, epic and creative and canon and character and just a little dark and well done.
At some point I also:
Read not one, but TWO stories that failed to label themselves as WIP until you got to the end of what was written. No love. Also? I can't see ever giving those authors a spin again, but maybe I'll forget it was them at some point.
Watched Eureka at my Dad's insistance, and he was right, I really did like it. Warm fuzzies.
Actually edited a crappy first draft when I couldn't find ought to read last night. It's off in beta. Wouldn't that be wierd if I posted a story in the midst of all this *handflappy* writing and stress and stuff.
I may be just a little too manic with the changing of the default icons, but I do like how much David Hewlett can communicate with his face.
Wrote a physics textbook (what? It totally feels like I did. Also? I need a scanner at home.)

Date: 2006-07-28 11:13 am (UTC)Or, depending on who he's talking to: it was fonts, and he's just saying it was porn.
Alternatively: Daniel's brain actually doesn't distinguish fonts and porn.

Date: 2006-07-28 06:12 pm (UTC)Alternatively, it was for Teal'c, who got way too addicted to playing Doom 3 and required an intervention. Jack insisted that porn was the way to go (Sam absolutely refused to do the dance of the seven veils and looked scary), but Daniel forgot about that and brought a nice lovely book (about fonts?) from his bookshelf because he forgot to go home that night too. Jack insisted he go download the porn afterall when the first earnest entreaty with very pretty words, in, perhaps, Copperplate Gothic Bold) to get Teal'c back into the land of the not-quite-as-violent failed to even get him to set down the controller.

I actually did! But don't ask me how I know, because I really don't know.
