Posting fic is good. Feedback is good. I, apparently, did not post any stories at all in May, which is funny because the Teal'c fic was posted right at the end of April (and nomm'd! YAY!) and the apocalyptothon Cameron & Sam fic was posted today. I have multiple fics, though, that are finished and drafted enough to have made their steady progress through beta-land at least once, and now I'm tempted to break out the rags and polish.

The incredible 7 fanfiction pieces nominated in the Stargate Fan Awards (seriously, thanks so much for the compliments) are so diverse in subject that none of them ended up seating themselves in even vaguely the same categories, and only two of the seven even feature the same pairing (it's Jack and Daniel, though. Awwww.)

You know what's wierd, though? Categorizing the threesome+femmeslash+crossover was much, MUCH easier than categorizing the Sam and Teal'c Watch Old Movies friendship piece.

ETA: These are the nomm'd fics:
Campfirelight, Campfire Stories. Calm little S9 team fic. Cam POV, gen.
One Day I'll Fly Away and Vanish. Jack/Daniel S9 NC-17 angst fic.
Like No One is Watching. Teamficathon action piece, Daniel POV, PG-13.
The Eye is not Satisfied with Seeing. For Taselby. Cameron/Teal'c NC-17 powerplay episode tag to Arthur's Mantle.
Perchance to Dream. Teal'c ficathon Sam and Teal'c friendship over old movies late at night fic. Teal'c POV, gen, PG.
Aliens Didn't Make Them Do It. Challenge response waaaay back when (it's something like the fourth thing I wrote) for Nialla. Jack/Daniel, S9 featuring Jack playing with Daniel's hands. PG-13 or R rated.
The Principle of Exclusion. Ah, the smutfic. Crossover with Atlantis, threesome, slash, femmeslash, multiple partners... good times, good times. In which Sam is not vanilla. NC-17. The easiest to categorize.

Picking a category iz hard, but at least I don't have to worry that they'll be competing with each other.

You all know you can find my fic under the fanfic tag or linked in the layout's left column, right? Good. Did I thank those of you who nominated all those fic? Thank you. It makes me happy.

I now present for you voting pleasure: WIPs! What would you most like to read?

Jack/Daniel mildly kinky fic. I started this as a comment fic and continued it a little for another challenge, then decided to keep going even farther but... lost focus. And zing. I have an idea, though...
excerpt: Daniel shifted his weight and slowly brought his hand out from underneath Jack’s shirt to wrap his fingers around the man’s other wrist. His thumb touched the tip of his longest finger as he twisted slightly, working his hand under the cuff of the jacket. Straightening and pulling Jack’s hand from its plant on his shoulder, Daniel deliberately pinned the second wrist to the wall. Jack’s breath hitched.

An orphan sexy bit that would stand alone as a Sam Self-love ficlet, with a little heavy petting. S7-ish, I think.
excerpt: Her hand began an unconscious soothing of the red thumbprint it left on her hip, a gentle petting just above the hair, in a half moon circular curve that mirrored the arc of her hip.
And wouldn't that have been appropriate to post last month? Being as how May was masturbation month? Oh well.

Cam and Teal'c, Courting. Oh, come on! You know these are old fashioned guys and you know they are planning dates with the goal of entertaining one another... courting! Specially tailored for a Southern Fanboy and a Patient Alien with a Subtle Sense of Humor. Also known as the fic where I finally use Taselby's ice cream prompt. And I think I should get points for contributing to the G-rated slash category.
excerpt: “We require spoons to drink a beverage?” he enquired, mildly perplexed as straws joined the spoons in each glass. “Does the ice cream not melt upon addition of liquid, Colonel Mitchell?”
“Not entirely, there’s this sort of crunchy outside around a hunk of frozen goodness,” Mitchell said, smiling, “although it does really help to have a hot day behind you to appreciate it, and I do not answer to Colonel Mitchell on my days off.”

What else is good: The Black Powder War arriving on my doorstep. How I love the UPS man.

Also also good: People. Friends are good. Friends help with that whole perspective thing and make lunch dates and offer to do the job the advisor will not do. Who offer hugs and let me off the hook for blanking on stuff. Who threaten to beat up mean people who make me sad, with a surprising variety of impliments. Yeah. Friends.

Picking categories IZ hard! I wobbled.

WIPs: Oh, polish these!!!! I love them all! Jack/Daniel is my SG OTP, and wall pinning makes me drown in my own drool, so definitely that! Though Cam and Teal'c on a date in an ice cream parlor is tickling my funny bone something fierce. So very '50s of Cam, and I can totally see that.

The J/D is going to take the most work, I think. I'm really pleased with all the foreplay and how they decide they're going to have a little bondage with their sex, but then the actual smut lacks zing. *ponders* I must decide where the toppy instinct comes from and how strong it is, I think. That's going to make or break the second part. *nods thoughtfully*

Cam and Teal'c, though, are very cute. Those boys. You should see the part where Cam gets nervous and a can of soda gets shaken accidentally. Hee! Wet shirt contest. Then they get a bit serious, and I must let them say serious things when what I really want is to let them lose the wet shirt. Mmmm....

Woo hoo! Good for you! Seven Noms, that's great.

Mine are a bit confusing...I got "The Games Men Play" nominated as a series, but I could have sworn they were going to have an unfinished series category, I know I read about it. But there's still one part left to go, and everything I'm reading says it can't be accepted if it's not complete. I'm actually writing part 7 now...I wonder if it would be cheating if I were to get it finished and posted by the time we have to make our final selections for categories? (That would be two weeks from now.) What do you think?

The other thing I got nomed is "Seduction," (part 4 of TGMP.) It can stand alone, with out the rest of the series, but it seems weird that whoever nomed it would pick that one out of the middle. At least it seems weird to me, anyway. I was expecting that if any of them got nomed individually, it woudl be the first one: "A Reall Bad Idea."

Aw, MAN! That's too bad about WIPs being disqualified. I think I heard that they had to be finished before the noms went out, but I could be totally wrong about that, and if you think you can finish in time, don't look into it.

A Really Bad Idea was marvelous, and I think really got the ball rolling, but maybe someone thought Seduction just hit a bulletproof kink? I think all of them can stand alone, really.

I think the J/D needs a POV switch. I remember you said you did that with the ficathon C/T, and I think it might help to switch to Jack's POV. I actually am pondering first person, but it won't last.

I'm getting a lot of joy out of all of these. It's been the height of ficathon season, so it'll be nice to get back to things that aren't prompted.

*hugs you back*

I think hugging is an art form. I was teased the other day (probably a few weeks ago, actually) for instinctively putting my arms underneath other people's when I hug them. Apparently the equible way is to offer one arm (usually right arm, dominant hand) up and one down, and if you are little, either in size or age, you might put both arms up to ask for support, and I guess it's odd for a woman to offer both arms low, because it offers support, and it's more of a stronger hug...

From my point of view, though, I'm bending down anyway (I'm tallish) so it's strange to bend and tilt, and I am strong, so it feels wierd to wrap my arms around someone's head if I put both arms up. Around the ribcage is a firm, warm, full hug. Balanced. And I have shoulders enough that wrapping arms around my shoulders is a good stable things too.

I must decide whether this warrants reconsidering. One up, one down is so TILTED, though, specially if you love petite people.

Hmmm....a switch to Jack's perspective would be a major change, wouldn't it? Because right now, you have a lot of Daniel's thoughts and the way he feels about the fact that Jack never kisses or even touches him with his mouth. So would you be expressing those in the next part, or just dropping them all together? It would be interesting, though, if you were to use Jack's perspective, because then you could get into *why* he never kisses...if that's what you had in mind, that is. I like it the way it is, to be honest, but I wouldn't have a problem seeing it from Jack's perspective. I guess it depends on what you have in mind for the rest of the fic.

I've used first person with Jack several times, but then, I feel much more comfortable with Jack than I do with Daniel. Come to think of it, I don't think I've done any fic from Daniel's POV...huh. How 'bout that...

You're right, the POV switch really worked for me in Jaffa School. I just couldn't get far enough into Teal'c's head to make it work in his POV, so the switch was just what I needed. I actually think you've got Daniel down pretty well in what I've read so far, but if you feel the need to switch POV's I say go for it. It worked for me.

Yeah, you were right about the fic needing to be finished before the Noms started, so I had to delete TGMP. Actually, I had to delete it twice, because it was listed as an individual fic and as a series. I spoke to Jane Davitt, who had the same problem with Eclipsed. She emailed them and that's the answer she got. Oh, well. It will be ready for next years noms...*g* I left The Seduction in, though. I'm pretty sure you're right - it can be read on it's own.

It's good to get nominated, in any event. Made my day.

I hadn't really either, and I never heard of the one-arm-up-one-arm-down thing, which is so sensible! In my experience, someone's usually initiating the hug, even if only by opening arms a micro-second before the other person, and the initiator's arms go around the outside, because they're, you know, more out. *g*

Kisses, now -- those are hard to negotiate. I mean the cheek kisses between friends or family. Whose head goes which way? This can get muddled and very silly, and really, somebody sensible ought to make up a rule, like both heads always turn to their own right, or something. (Then of course people from one country would somehow wind up always turning their heads to the left instead, and there'd be serious collisions. *g*)

That would put a damper on international relationships, I should think. Plus, what if you're just in a very odd angle on a couch or something and feel like initiating a little snogging? Would be better to adapt than break your neck, I say.

I'm looking at your icon and dissecting it now, because Janet hugs like I do, though she's small as opposed to tallish, and Daniel's doing the hugging of the head thing (which also looks like a cuddling of a teddy bear hug) so now I'm wondering if there isn't a personality aspect involved. I've learned to pick people up, not when hugging, but when caring for, so maybe it's a bit of a 'here, let me hold you up' sort of hug (not to be confused with 'here, let me transfer you onto that exam table')

Oooooh! Teal'c/Sam hug. Discuss.

Well, I was told to hug to learn to tango, which is danced in very nearly a hug format, so that was when I learned that apparently girls are supposed to hug with their arms up.

In heels, I don't mind so much. Support is always helpful.

But hugging, you know, is full body interaction with another person, so of course you're going to have different lifestyle choices, it's just not as high pressure as some other full body contact sports. Lower expectations, maybe?

It's not so much getting the voice, it's getting the zing of the piece. In Daniel's POV, the fic wants to be about where he learned this, which, IMO, leads the piece to be not very sexy, when it starts out very strong. I think if I let it be what Jack registers, then I can drop hints about what Daniel is improvising and what he knows from experience without taking the focus off the two of them, and letting the sexy ramp up with Jack rather than taking the controlled mindset of Daniel.

I've never written Jack POV, and I don't think that first person stuff will hold up or make it onto the page, but it was interesting as I started thinking about it again how much my brain wanted to follow Jack.

Hmmm...yeah, I see what you're saying. Making the switch makes more sense to me now. Not that I think it's not sexy now, because I think it is already extremely erotic. But I can see where switching perspectives could ramp it up even more. I think you're right about the first person, though. I think first person works rather well from Jack's perspective, when it's used with restraint, but to put this one in that tight of a POV would be rather confining. Third person gives you more flexibility, and I think this fic needs that.

but it was interesting as I started thinking about it again how much my brain wanted to follow Jack.

Hey, I say give it free reign...that's your hidden Jack muse coming out to play. *g*

Lower expectations, maybe?

Maybe. But hugs are used to communicate so many different emotions and can be subject to such a wide variety of interpretations that you would think that we would be much more aware of what we're doing when we hug another person. But then, that would take all the joy out of a spontaneous hug, wouldn't it? And they're the best kind. So I think I need to stop thinking about it, and just get out there and hug some people. I know for a fact that my roommate could use a hug right now. So I'm going to go do that. Thanks for reminding me.
