May. 21st, 2006 02:00 pmLook at the Princess.
Mmmmmm kissing. Very nice. You know, the chemistry between John and Aeryn is so interesting partly because it’s character driven first and incendiary second. Take how they just kissed. Aeryn was tentative, John was *so there*, she went with passion and then the kiss became almost hard, and when her brain caught up she freaked out and John was confused and annoyed.
And you know why it was totally awesome that Chiana was totally grinding up against John’s backside in the very next scene? Because that too was character driven, that was Chiana offering advice to help the wayward and freaked out lovers and putting her body where her mouth was (so to speak) and she totally made her point that emotions and physicality are different when she turned John on.
She probably wouldn’t have minded if it had worked, either. Sometimes I adore Chiana more than words. I also adore how any particular set of glasses would let you ship pretty much anyone you like because it’s bloody canon at this point that if they haven’t been trapped together in intimate positions by now, they have, at the very least, propositioned each other directly. I don’t know many shows that so blatantly bring sex into everything. Makes so much sense that aliens would not come from Puritanical roots though, nice to see the effects.
And that was just the hook, ladies and gents.
Oh, they’re caught in a tight spot too. Something about crossfires, remote weapons as a first line of defense, apparently Peacekeeper, yadda.
*snork*
There is much kissing in this episode. I am entertained muchly. Also intrigue, political maneuvering, sibling rivalry taken to an extreme and really pretty people. Yay episode!
Um, pretty girl at the mercy of above intrigues kisses John and wants to marry him, right? (she doesn’t talk much, by the way) Never saw that coming… oh, wait. *g* Can’t blame her, though.
Holy painted water guns, Batman! Also, yum, sushi.
What up with the Scarran’s breath, huh? It’s reminding me of the holy wind of the Temeraire books or those cartoon moments when Daphne eats garlic to ward off vampires in Scooby Doo (and who wouldn’t back off if the air went all wavy like that, really?) Also, now I’ve seen this weeks Dr. Who, reminds me of Bron’s ‘did I tell you that I can shoot poison darts out of my finger, or, failing that, breathe poison at you? Hmmm?’ speech with the Doctor in the café.)
Aaaaaaiiiiii, right, that blue-eyed baby became a brown eyed little boy? I’ll just assume that was Ben’s boy and therefore had a specific reason to be there. That is a serious pet peeve, though. Does the Princess have blue or brown eyes? I shouldn’t look, that is never a detail anyone else notices when they do baby/kid eps, and I should totally let it go, since it’s not the Cosby Show, after all.
Bwahahahaha, the interruption of D’Argo and Chiana in bed is FABULOUS, as is everyone’s reactions (or lack thereof). I LOVE D’ARGO. Ahem.
I also really love how abrasive Aeryn is about emotions.
And now John’s head has gone all watercolory, to be continueeeed.
Right now. Okay.
Huh, Peacekeepers, Scarrans and Scorpy all over the place. Shoulda seen that coming.
And now we have a genie in a nebula thinks Moya no longer deserves a soul. No wonder these storylines required three episodes.
Holy soap on a stick with cheesecake that was the best line ever. ‘Now, don’t feel bad. It’s not you, it’s me; I don’t like you.’ Ahahahahahahaaaaaa!!!!!!! I love Aeryn.
“Kill my sex life!” *points gun at right hand* I LOVE JOHN! (incidently, that isn’t Fran again in makeup, is it? She did this thing with her teeth that reminded me of M’Lee) I’m growing to really love it when John snaps, it’s so entertaining. Sometimes way over the top, but really entertaining. He doesn’t stop moving.
You know, with the statue thing, and Ben making that ridiculous pained face, and D’Argo’s last words to him (the good news is that he and Chiana are having fantastic sex), it’s really difficult to say whom I love most in this episode.
To be continued. Yup, right now.
Part 3:
Yet another attempt on John’s life, which is… yeah. Number 4, I think. I’m a little more concerned about Moya and Pilot at the moment. Piiiiiillllllloooooootttttttt?
Meh. They were testing Zhaan? That coulda been cooler.
Casanova boy is weeeeak. Oh well, someone had to dispense the emotional wisdom and Lord knows Aeryn needs to be smacked over the head with it.
Alas, now we have John cavorting with the PK woman with the overbite and very large eyes, and Chiana hanging with a gag over a vat of boiling acid. How Batman indeed.
Heeeeeeey, something interesting in Scorpius with the heat and the faintness and the faking all of it (go Scorpy!) I thought we were going to get stuck in a clicheathon for a second there.
I LOVE most of all when Ben and Claudia get the screen and there isn’t any dialog. That is just the awesomest of awesome things, how they say so much and show so much and hold my attention so thoroughly the entire time. Great smiles, guys, and I love that neither of you saw the other smile, that was about perfect.
So we could discuss the title, and how it's probably about Aeryn doing her little Diva act as much as the literal princess (who says little and is more a figure and is not seen as a whole person very often and is literally turned into an object. And, yeah, it's probably first about her, but also, AERYN) and how all of it was a distraction from the real issue, which, when brought up, caused her to run away and be un-lookable. Which, come to think of it, is reminding me of this passage from a book by Nick Bantock about museums and things where a quiet girl and a shy boy start trying to talk together, an interruption happens and he gives up. The girl is left thinking 'idiot!' and wanting more to happen, but isn't proactive about it, instead tries to pretend she doesn't care, which is so counterproductive and yet, so sympathetic.
So here, does the title have to be about the Princess or Aeryn? Could it be John doing a princess act? D'Argo being heir to John's sort of leadership position on Moya? Zhaan inheriting the responsibility for Talyn? Chiana being a doll and a sweetheart? Rygel asserting his royalty? *stretches*
I know I had other thinky thoughts, but now I've had a visit, internetly speaking, I'm all caught up in thoughts about writing and plottiness and structures and I must write now. Right now. *is lame*

Date: 2006-05-21 09:08 pm (UTC)Best part of the episode, third part and why on my post a couple of days back I listed it as a fave episode of mine.
(Me, who just recently started watching the show.)

Date: 2006-05-21 09:12 pm (UTC)I find LATP kind of week, structurally, because the last section feels kind of padded. Also because Aeryn should never have fallen omg, but I'm mostly over that. There's all sorts of good bits in it.
Oh! You can now read 24 Hour Pass by Annigmatic. Fantastic story, no particular spoilers beyond the LatP reference; it was written in season 2 and won a bunch of awards.

Date: 2006-05-21 10:57 pm (UTC)and that moment with chiana and d'argo is hilarious. as for aeryn...she's so very much herself in these episodes, and the way that her edges clatter up against john's is quite something.
these are episodes that remind me of how *different* cameron mitchell is from john crichton. and you're right about john snapping. holy bat dren.
those little smiles at the end are a thing of joy and beauty.
go write, have fun! *hugs*

Date: 2006-05-21 11:22 pm (UTC)In the interest of relieving annoyance, it should be noted that babies fruently have light or blue colored eyes which get darker as they age. The pigmentation that defines eye color isn't set in a child until about 1 year old. Even folks from ethnic backgrounds that produce predominately dark eyes, like African Americans, can still have babies with eyes that start off blue.

Date: 2006-05-22 12:10 am (UTC)Nice catch -- perhaps there is shared genetics between Scarrans and the Sliveen (sp?). And Daphne from Scooby Doo.

This is The Venetian's Wife, am I remembering right? It inspired me to write a scene similar - types of things that happen in museums that don't go anywhere, or do they? - and I love Nick Bantock.
I like your thinky thoughts about LaTP. It's been a while since I've seen it, but I don't think there is a single ep of Farscape that hasn't imprinted itself on me in some way. This arc was a big step in showing the audience who John and Aeryn really are and where they might be going.
Oy, I love them.

Thank you so much for the recs. Hee! And spoiler avoidance ones at that! Awesome.

Date: 2006-05-22 05:26 pm (UTC)That was true of Michael Shank's daughter, though, wasn't it? Also bugged me that they had her as a baby play the baby of an Islander woman (playing Egyptian) and a black man, I think from Jamaica? With blue eyes. It was worth it to see her react to her Daddy on screen, but at the time it jolted me out of the scene. Then she goes on to grow up to deep brown eyes. Shows what I know.

Date: 2006-05-22 05:31 pm (UTC)Thank you for remembering it was the Venetian's Wife, because man that was driving me crazy, not remembering that. All my books are in storage or I'd I have picked it up and reread the scene... I miss my books. Maybe I'll go hug the boxes or sing to them or something later.
This episode was impressive and I loved a lot of the characters so, so much in this. The last ep was too much, but for the tag alone it was completely worth it. I do so love the Farscape. It's so much fun to be watching for the first time with y'all giggling somewhere over my shoulder about what's coming. *g*

Date: 2006-05-22 07:17 pm (UTC)Do you even need the glasses? Forget slash goggles - I think they filmed Farscape with special polymorphous perversity lenses in the cameras.
And they're so entirely deliberate and knowing about it, too.
