The reasons for a rec are probably more or less the same as they always are, but because this is a remix, there are two stories to consider for each rec made, so there's also a question of whether they are stronger together, and whether they are in the spirit of the remix. Just to keep in mind. Also, I don't read everything. Nobody reads that fast, man.

One-ish rec/fandom, by fandom, and I went out of my way to read fandoms I'm versed in, though may not read a great deal of, and I restricted recs to this year's remix only. Also note please that the original fics are linked within the remix page if I haven't linked directly to them.

Farscape: I have a deep fear of being spoiled in Farscape fandom, so there are a number of fic that I didn't read for fear of spoilers. That said, ironically, No Joy (the extended operatic remix) by Shunda (=[livejournal.com profile] sugargroupie) of The Devil To Pay by Lynda (=[livejournal.com profile] pdxscaper) is set after the Peacekeeper Wars Mini, and an interesting remix. The original story spins the last few moments of the mini differently, setting up a more dangerous un-resolution, and the remix plays out the physical and emotional repercussions (as far as Aeryn is able to deal with them) of the setup through the fade to black to the coda that Scorpius sees from afar, only in Aeryn's POV. Neat. Crafty, man. I do love Aeryn's enduring confusion, and I love the feeling that this could be kicking off another season of Farscape with arcs and twists and fallout that none of us would see coming. Cool story, excellent crafty remix.

Alias: Uncommon Methods (by Siryn) remix: How Don Ho Saved the World by Bella Temple, is a remix of a short drabble in which characters are not named. This one gets props from me for, I think, nicely extrapolating that Weiss would be the kind of guy to fight his own battles his own way, with mirth and irony. In his underwear. It's a situation I could see playing out in canon to a degree. Entertains me, precious. S2-ish, PG for mention of underclothing. Heh. Gen.

Harry Potter: Now, I have to admit to a deeply held squick about underage pairings (and I really don't want to talk about student-teacher pairings either.) And the books and the movies are sort of enough for me most of the time, but I did read some of the HP fic, and two stood out. The first is Oh Night, and Divine (the Selfish Wish Remix) by Imochan of Christmas 1977 by Thistlerose, which is Remus/Sirius R rated slash and notable for the innocence of (of age, please note) first love being torn about into something with doubt, but also remembering that even with Sirius going to prison, learning that wisdom, being that broken, he is emotionally still the innocent he was when he left. Sirius/Remus, R or NC-17.

Also, a very powerful piece Before I Wake by Esinde Nayrall remixed by krabapple into The Evidence of Things Not Seen (The Substance of Things Hoped For remix). It's an interesting treatise on the difference between faith and magic, and the notion that bridging the gap between science and faith is the old wisdom, older magic Lily uses to protect Harry and fool the powers of evil. It stayed with me this one, for ideas alone, let alone that it's well written. And I think it's difficult to write a piece dealing with a particular religion without ever getting preachy, but both pieces were done well. PG-13 for content, maybe R. Mostly about Lily, James and Harry, but Sirius/Remus is lightly implied.

Firefly: I can now credit victoria p. with the authorship of the beautiful Canticle for These Women, a remix of the gorgeous Daughters of Jerusalem by Hth. Both these pieces are lovely with a serenity befitting the all that means in the show, and I think together they will transcend the fandom and be worth reading regardless of whether you know the 'verse. They are that good. Poly, rate it, dunno R?

SG-1: Aha. The gorgeous remix of [livejournal.com profile] tripoli8's If the Sycamore, Swaying entitled A Sudden Clearing was written by nanda ([livejournal.com profile] nandamai). Gen, serious, rate it PG-13 for subject and character death. It's stunning.

Atlantis: I'm going to have to rec a remix without having read the original, but here is what I know of it: Alpha Centauri by Hth is a long series about John/Rodney/Ronon. Proxima (the Distant Orbit Remix) by Zulu condenses the story into a single fic and takes Teyla's POV, which is always an interesting 'team dynamics' question usually left unexplored in threesome-within-the-team fics. My favorite aspects of Teyla, her strength, her emotional intelligence, her ability to read people smartly though she may not understand the connotations of their slang, are all there, as are the wonderful canon withholding of judgement though you get the feeling that if asked, Teyla would have a great deal to say in the matter. Nothing explicit, but R probably anyway.

Although I have to point out that there are, much like the larger fandom, extraordinary fics all through the Atlantis page, and I'd encourage you to read through the fandoms yourself for bargain two for the price of one fics (but seriously, the Atlantis fics, there are great ones there. Someone else will have to tell you about them though, 'cause I'm beat.)
