And how is it possible that you have not read anything by Elmore Leonard? Lord, are you missing out! He's best known for his urban stuff but back when he was cutting his teeth as a writer (in the '60s or so) he wrote Westerns.
He wrote VALDEZ IS COMING, which was made into a pretty awful movie but that's not his fault. He took the money and ambled off to the nearest bar, I suppose. But that novel has one of my favorite opening lines ever: "Everybody used to be somebody else."
