reccing for the weekend
Feb. 18th, 2006 10:39 amOkay, here's what I know:
For the Atlantis, other's rec more thoroughly and it 's their thing (I point you to
ship_recs who is a masterful pimp) but this one can't be passed over: Survival by
niannah is Ronon POV (is voice is marvelous, how he says little, sees much, and might return to any given conversation whenever he has something else to say about it) with John/Rodney in the background, which is marvelous, especially as Ronon starts to understand that it's more than just safety and basic needs now, and he starts thinking about what he wants, has and things like luxuries and things precious. Really beautifully written. Just the opening observations of weather are incredible.
janedavitt has posted the third story in her Eclipsed Series and I highly recommend it. At the moment, I love that Paul is jealous of Daniel and that Jack plays it a little bit when he's really angry. I actually love this for all the ways Paul ISN'T Daniel: he's a diplomat but when he's saying what he really means can be tactless and harsh and difficult. That the rank between Jack and Paul bites them on the ass at inconvenient times and that they are never unaware of it. That of the two men, it ends up being Jack who can say what he wants, can apologize (I adore the hints that this is Daniel's influence) because it's a totally different relationship from the Jack/Daniel relationship I adore in it's own right, but still CHARACTER driven.
Which, really, is all I ever want: character driven stories that tell me something more about the people involved (preferably angsty, can you guys do that for me?) and why I'm totally willing to see other pairings if they tell me something new about the characters. [/meta]
Uh, whoops, I gotta go. I had some more fics I wanted to talk about but... later.
Don't miss me too much, yeah?

Date: 2006-02-19 02:18 am (UTC)Okay, for you, carte blanche.
But I think (as I ponder over the course of the day) that Daniel's influence on Jack has got to be both a source of jealousy and gratefulness for Paul. I mean, the best friend has got to be an even touchier issue with the long distance and the tent sharing and the life or death issues and the fact that Daniel is really quite edible... And Paul, he has some issues, no?
You are welcome. Thanks for giving me something to think about.

Date: 2006-02-19 03:31 am (UTC)He's stuck because he's intelligent enough to know Jack's not going to let him diss Daniel one little tiny bit -- and besides, as an individual, Paul's got nothing but admiration for Daniel. He _likes_ him.
But Daniel ain't military and he's a rival, not for Jack's lust - Paul's pretty secure about that - but for Jack's time and interest.
And Paul knows he can't do anything about that and if he could, he wouldn't, because SG-1 matters to him almost as much as it does to the team themselves.
But he's still jealous as hell on one level and that's very natural, I think...

*pets Daniel too because he's not even getting any, durnit!*
It's totally natural. Jack and Daniel are close, no matter whether it's romantic or not. Anybody'd be jealous. 'Course, it would really really help if Daniel met somebody and you know, TOLD PAUL about it. That would be really considerate.
