my fellow fen,
Nov. 19th, 2007 04:33 pmI would like to present to you for consideration, the following:
A brilliant Elizabeth piece. She never did much for me on screen, but this kind of subtlety and self-awareness and edge is exactly the kind of potential that I missed.
minnow1212's Five Ways Elizabeth Weir Leaves Someone Behind. SGA, Elizabeth, some canon het pairings, but basically gen/Bob. Amazing character study, and one of those instances where a fic opens your eyes to the awesomeness of a character.
minervacat's fascinating crossover pairing of Jack Harkness (Torchwood/Dr. Who) and Vala Mal Doran (SG-1). The empathy and friendship between them is so effortless it's stunning, given the characters involved. she can drive as fast as me, but she stops at all the lights. The first dialog exchange alone has stayed with me just because I can hear Claudia Black saying it in my head. Torchwood season 1, (Dr. Who season 1 also) and SGA, season 10 (and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, a little bit), Jack/Vala, het, NC-17.
It's amazing to me that this can be said, but it's true: a post-decension Jack/Daniel that could be read as Jack & Daniel friendship, if you prefer, despite the NC-17 rating. This is a return with some bumps in the road for Daniel adjusting to a smaller mind, a corporeal body, memory loss and synesthesia. But he gains Jack, and Sam and Teal'c, and Janet. And this incredible story, structure and telling by M. System of a Down. It's not new, but it doesn't need to be. S7, Jack/Daniel or Jack & Daniel, SG-1, NC-17.
[The coincidental reading of two SGA fics with similar premises has sent SG-1 ideas bouncing around in my head, and I would really like company, if you were wondering. Informal challenge is therefore issued: join me in writing alternate universes, with one of our heroes quantum leaping through them, won't you? Ship, or not. Have another hero dashing madly around trying to help, or not. SG-1, or not (crossover!) Up to you.]
These are the two stories I read. I rec them both quite a lot, if for no other reason than they made such an impression that I have thought about them quite a bit since.
toft_froggy's All These Places We Have Met. SGA Sheppard/McKay, brilliant alternate universes. I'd love to hear the full story of each one of them. NC-17, and watch out for the ending, it's a sneaker wave.
Also,
torakowalski's Infinite Probability, also McKay/Sheppard, and NC-17, but the similar rating and pairing masks different structures, timelines, impetus and independence. Premise might ping for other ST:TNG fans.
Seriously, hopping through alternate universes. I wanna see some fic.
Lovely Teyla and Radek story:
wojelah's The Boy Who Didn't Need Stories. SGA, gen, Teyla and Radek, G.
...speaking of,
sugargroupie has fallen hard for Teyla and Elizabeth, gen, ship, Bob or whathaveyou. Anyone have stories to rec or point her towards? Bonus if I get to read as well, of course.
Teamy pick-me-up story: Swimming Hole by
texanfan. SGA, team, G.
rowan_d's
sg1_by_hand fic, prompted by the episode 'The Light' for Sam is wonderfully angsty: Into The Light, NC-17, Sam, but with Sam/Jack UST explicit.
Alert readers of this journal should all be aware by now of the dark 'verse that
synedochic has been writing on and off for a while here. It's her Eurydice Universe, where they are all as fucked up as they might have been, considering, but this is somewhere towards the end of the arc she's writing and, as incomplete tendrils of resolution go, it's fascinating. The Same Story the Crow Told Me, S10-ish, in this AU, Daniel has disappeared again. Daniel, team, and more or less gen, surprisingly, considering that the 'verse has a lot of multiple partners. Vala and Teal'c are bloody amazing.
Lastly, for the moment, at least,
surreallis's Cameron and Daniel, intense and with engines and beer and comradery and pre-slash and comfort. Without a Scratch for the Cameron Mitchell ficathon. SG-1, Cameron/Daniel, PG-13.
