What are your thoughts on the 2008 election?
My thoughts on politics in general are that only people who agree with one another can discuss the subject. The rest of the time it strays into belief territory, and people get awfully defensive when you question their beliefs (never mind the foundation, it's irrelevant in the face of perceived attack.)
So it's not my favorite thing to discuss. You didn't ask for a discussion, though, so.
I can tell you this: the fact that, one way or another, a black man or a woman was going to have the limelight, the top billing, front and center? I'm proud of that. Platforms and attack ads and party lines and independent thought aside, it's about time. And as it happens, I feel that the current leadership (the ones I'd hoped would speak for me included) has failed on a couple of fronts, I am okay with someone of shorter experience shaking things up.
And I do not approve of the current administration's secrecy. I think the US as a country has a lot of explaining to do to the world, and a great deal of apologizing. I think a significant step towards being forgiven will be how we are perceived ourselves, and electing dramatically different leadership will help there too. I think the privacy lost and the deficit created are counter the stated conservative ideology, and I'm convinced that the stated ideology was thrown out the window in favor of power mongering and egotism.
I would love to have an orator in office. I've never been able to sit through more than two sentences from our current Commander in Chief without cringing.
What's your favorite superhero movie?
I'm a fan of the X-Men as superhero movies go. I like the idea that change and adaptation and skill comes from within, not an alien planet or a mutant spider. And I like that we all bring different skills to the table.
What's the worst roommate experience you've ever had?
My first year in college (just turned 18) I shared a closet-sized room with a Moroccan woman who'd recently lost her father in a car crash. M had no idea her hair was curly. Her mother had never been stable, her siblings had been virtually disowned and she was unsure of her place in the world. She was such a little mouse of a thing that the day she screamed out at least four stages of grief in a two hour block of time between classes is one I'm not likely to forget any time soon.
Roommates are an interesting situation, though. I've almost always lived with people closer to strangers than friends, so to me the experience is totally different from living with someone you love. Although I grew to deeply love the roommate I lived with or immediately beside for the next three years of college, she and I were still strangers when we moved it, even if we did establish compatibility as strangers. If you were wondering, the rules were: sleeps with windows open, doesn't talk on the phone more than a few times a week for long conversations, really isn't modest (at all, seriously). Apparently, this is all that's required in a roommate for me? Except that I may never so adore another friend in my life the way I adored P. I really need to go back to Europe soon so I can see her.
Feel free to keep asking questions, guys.
