Buckle up, folks, this little ride through fandoms usual and obscure is going to take a while.
nomadicwriter wrote a big, long, wonderful, plotty, teamy crossover story between SG-1 and SGA featuring Goa'uld and technology and Jack's clone Jon etc, etc, and then she went and wrote a freakin' brilliant commentary. In it, you will find fairly amazing character insights into almost everyone, but her breakdown of why Teal'c is more than comically into Star Wars is perhaps my favorite. But then, Teal'c is perhaps my favorite character at this point, so I will also point to some of the Jack insights as ones that really sat me back in my chair. Links within this one for The Pegasus Connection Author's Commentary will take you to the original fic. Worksafe, SG-1/SGA crossover, teams, gen.
Then there's the darkfic which, I swear, has left me speechless:
ivorygates's The Colors of That Piece of Time. It's Cameron centric, there's a little bit of slash, there are alternate realities and it's psychologically complex and *dark* and amazing. PG-13, worksafe, SG-1, Cameron.
ivorygates also penned this amazing, short, kick-to-the-teeth Jack character piece: Imaginary Presidents. Jack, complex and not easy and dark, but worksafe, gen and SG-1.
Speaking of the devil,
ivorygates and
synecdochic collaborate on (many, but in this case a particular) AU in which the gender of Cameron Mitchell is female. This plays out in a rather fascinating way with Daniel, and they've just written up Platonic (five times Cammie Mitchell and Daniel Jackson slept together) as part of that 'verse. It's not exactly friendship only, but it's certainly worksafe. SG-1, Cameron&Daniel, het or something, genderswap AU, worksafe.
This older fic from
kylielee1000 is a gorgeous moment in time at Jack's cabin. It's an incredibly *built* piece: the structure of the dialog-no dialog bits coincides really effectively with the pause-action sequences. Minnisota. Jack/Daniel, not worksafe, SG-1.
helenish has just posted a nice lengthy John/Rodney story, and you just know that means there will be plot, and emotional arcs, and the men being boys and idiots sometimes and horny a lot of the time and they'll make some really bad decisions and some really good ones, but the thing of this is, Teyla and Ronon also have arcs in the story, so do most of the people in the city, actually. It's just amazing how that happens sometimes in the middle of smoking hot NC-17 slash-fics. 17.5: A Love Story, SGA, John/Rodney (plus some other sexual situations), NC-17.
And you might as well chase those with the queen of feel-good John/Rodney: Discovery, Stumbled Upon (amazingly straightforward, intense friendship that means that the reveal is almost a joint logic process, so sweet! I love logic!) and the reasonable play-out of a fantasy, In Their Bed, both SGA, John/Rodney, NC-17. Like aftershocks from
mmmchelle in her fic journal.
And, should you be wishing for a little old married couple whimsy, an off-world mission gone unfortunate, fashion-wise.
theemdash's Foxtrot on P8X-682, Jack/Daniel with team, PG-13, SG-1
Salieri, also known as
troyswann on the street, wrote a lovely friendship kind of interaction for Daniel and Elizabeth Wier, circa S7/8 when Elizabeth first was introduced on SG-1. Unknown Waters, Daniel and Elizabeth, worksafe, SG-1.
Sal's piece can probably be included in the the next batch of fics here, which I shall categorize as 'really, really amazing authors writing again in Stargate after a spell. Whom I've missed reading because they are amazing writers, people.' The first couple, go back to my Jack/Daniel slash-loving, old-married-love-adoring roots in fandom, so they get extra shiny gelt.
From
raqs, posted on my first day of vacation and lovely to find. Beautiful and sharp and real and gentle. Raqs has an amazing romantic side, but her stories are usually very realistically drawn, in 3D characters with flaws and responsibilities and irrationalities and loves and needs and wonderful conflicting hearts and minds. Or sometimes not conflicting, sometimes trying very hard and succeeding: Quiet, post-S8, Jack/Daniel, SG-1, worksafe.
From
princessofg, one of those uniquely Jack/Daniel possibilities: a first-time that still feels like old married love. Where they are so completely on the same page that there might be nervousness, or newness or any kind of range of emotion, but it's not surprise, you know? Because how could they not anticipate each other after 10 years? That Old Feeling. Jack/Daniel, first time, NC-17, SG-1, post-S8/pre-S9.
From
teand, a Sam story that rather hilariously blends Dickensian Christmas elements with Abba refrences and flying toilets. Good times, good times. A Christmas Carter, gen, SG-1 team, Sam, worksafe.
From
elishavah, extra cuddly S7 team, dealing with being a team again off-world, and all that processing. I really can't get enough S7 catharsis. Realignment, Daniel and the team, S7, SG-1, worksafe. Very nice Jack voice.
Good times from
aurora_novarum, and that rarest of things: Sam and Jack friendship. And very nicely done, too. Holding the Bags, holiday shopping, and Sam and Jack and SG-1 and worksafe.
Two more Jack/Daniel from
theemdash, The Christmas Thaw (sweet with worry and contriteness and communication) and Signs of Weakness (early seasons and straight forward and heart-breaking). Both SG-1, Jack/Daniel and worksafe.
A few more SGA before we jump to yuletide and non-Stargate fandoms:
From
cesperanza, an elegant study of John reacting to Rodney, in a challenge written to the prompt of wordless, that ironically became a luxuriously sized story. The Te of John.
Speaking of Speranza's stuff--have you guys heard the podcast that lim and
zoetrope and a HOST of others put together for Written By the Victors? Because it is, seriously, extraordinary. I listened, rapt, for hours. No kidding. I haven't heard the two mediums blend in such an extraordinary and effective way before, it was quite an eye-opening experience.
kellifer_fic's League of Fairly Unusual Gentlemen 'Verse also got a nice addition in the form of Origin which continues to bring some of the most hilarious cast highlights from half a dozen shows together and reflect them through Cameron Mitchell's POV. GOOD TIMES. Crossover SPN/SGA/SG-1/Buffy/Angel, worksafe.
From
alizarin_nyc a Doppleganger tag, John and Rodney and sharing dreams. Lovely. Sharing Dreams. SGA, John/Rodney, NC-17.
Lastly, but not leastly,
auburnnothenna's Visions of Sugar Plums, in which the team has a great mission and a long flight home and they just relax and sleep and flop all over one another and it's a wonderful way to celebrate a holiday, turns out.
Crud, or yay, depending on how you look at it: I still have 9 non-Stargate Yuletide-type recs. I think my fingers are coded out though, I'm starting to mis-type and the recs are getting much shorter than they deserve to be (my own fault for letting them build up, admittedly.) Still, this ought to get you started, I'll have a Yuletide recs post soon.
Today it rained. A proper good soaking and I went out in it because i had to and was deliciously soaked myself from hip to toe. I changed into my gym pants as a result and my hair dried and fell in ropes around my face and then curtains and rain is luscious. It's refreshing and balancing and the lack of it more often may be the defining reason I probably can't stay in California long-term. I love the sound of the ocean, but I miss the rain. I was also deeply homesick over Christmas vacation. RAIN.
